WATER FLOODING PATTERN
• One of the first steps in designing a water flooding project is flood
pattern selection.
• The objective is to select the proper pattern that will provide the
injection fluid with the maximum possible contact with the crude oil
system.
2
WATER FLOODING PATTERN (CONT.)
• This selection can be achieved by:
1. Converting existing production wells into injectors.
2. Drilling infill injection wells.
So, In general, the selection of a suitable flooding pattern for the
reservoir depends on the number and location of existing wells.
3
WATER FLOODING PATTERN (CONT.)
• When making the selection, the following factors must be considered:
1. Reservoir heterogeneity and directional permeability.
2. Direction of formation fractures.
3. Availability of the injection fluid (gas or water).
4. Desired and anticipated flood life.
5. Maximum oil recovery.
6. Well spacing, productivity, and injectivity

TYPES OF WELL ARRANGEMENTS
(WATER FLOODING PATTERNS)
1. Irregular injection patterns.
2. Peripheral injection patterns.
3. Regular injection patterns.
4. Crestal and basal injection patterns
5
IRREGULAR INJECTION PATTERNS
Causes:
1. slant-hole drilling techniques.
2. Some small reservoirs with a limited number of wells.
3. Faulting.
4. Localized variations in porosity or permeability.
6
PERIPHERAL INJECTION PATTERNS
• The injection wells are located at
the external boundary of the
reservoir and the oil is displaced
toward the interior of the reservoir.
7
REGULAR INJECTION PATTERNS
1. Direct line drive.
2. Staggered lin e drive.
3. Four spot.
4. Five spot.
5. Seven spot.
6. Nine spot

CRESTAL AND BASAL INJECTION PATTERNS
• In crestal injection, the injection is through
wells located at the top of the structure.
Ex: Gas injection projects typically use a
crestal injection pattern.
• In basal injection, the fluid is injected at the
bottom of the structure.
Ex: Many water-injection projects use basal
injection patterns with additional benefits
being gained from gravity segregation.
