Legal English relating to the United Nations (UN), World Trade
Organization (WTO), Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and International
Investment Agreements (IIAs).

5.1. Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
This course aims at improving students’ legal English in the field of
international trade and investment law. Upon completion of the course,
students will be able to:
❖ Knowledge
K1. Understand and apply the vocabulary, grammar and structures of
English in an international trade and investment law setting;
K2. Explain the sources and branches of international law;
K3. Explain the basic terminologies of trade law in goods, services,
intellectual property rights and dispute settlement;
K4. List the typical chapters and basic rules of origin in free trade
agreements;

K5. List the typical provisions and standards of treatment in investment
treaties;
K6. Describe the procedures of investor-state arbitration;
K7. Understand the structure and layout of different forms of legal writing.
❖ Skills
S8. Design and deliver a presentation in English on international trade and
investment law in accurate language;
S9. Work independently and collaboratively with other students to prepare
research papers, press releases, workshop agendas or dialogues;
S10. Listen to main ideas and details in academic lectures or talks about
international trade and investment law;
S11. Write a letter or email of legal advice and a legal memorandum;

10. POLICIES OF THE COURSE

11. ASSESSMENT METHODS
11.1. Regular assessment
- Inspections: Students participate in 75% or more of the prescribed hours
for each theory or seminar part.

strictly penalized.
- Formatting style: Paper Size: A4, Font: Times New Roman, Size: 13, Margins:
Top 2cm, Bottom 2cm, Left 3cm, Right 2cm, Line Spacing: Multiple at 1.3,
Spacing: Before 6pt, After 6pt.
