1. Introduction
The Practice DQL Basics – lab series will assist you in building your first DQL queries. These self-guided labs
provide the instructions to lead you through basic to intermediate usage of DQL. They are designed to work in
a Dynatrace Grail-enabled environment with an implementation of easyTravel. You will benefit most from
these labs by reviewing them along with the videos found in the DQL Basics OnDemand course.

Use this guide when creating an environment where each lab should function and aid in building your DQL
skills and exploring Grail data by creating your own DQL queries.

Many of the queries in these labs, especially for logs, will function in any system, so you can still try them for
practice. You may need to change some of the parameters for them to function within your environment.

1.1 Prerequisites
Prior to beginning this course, you should have an understanding of Dynatrace as a monitoring solution. You
should be familiar with how Dynatrace monitors your environment and gathers data.

2. Setting Up Your Lab Environment

The lab environment is essentially made up of two parts: a Grail Enabled Dynatrace SaaS environment and a
machine running easyTravel.

Resources

easyTravel Application

2.1 easyTravel
easyTravel is a demonstration application built for Dynatrace. easyTravel provides a web portal for users to
log in, search for destinations, and book journeys using credit cards. A Business-to-Business (B2B) web portal
for travel agencies is provided where travel agencies can manage the journeys they offer and can review
reports about bookings made by users. easyTravel is available for both Windows and Linux. Both the easyTravel
application and OneAgent can be installed on your own machine for these labs, though results may vary.

easyTravel can be downloaded from the Dynatrace community here. easyTravel needs to be installed within
your infrastructure and access to the easyTravel Launcher is needed to start and stop easyTravel scenarios, and
load problem patterns. Please familiarize yourself with the easyTravel Launcher and the web application before
proceeding with the lab activities.
easyTravel Tips
easyTravel generates traffic to the application when a scenario is started and running. You may also need to
generate user sessions manually.
Tip 1: To log in when booking a trip, you can click the lock icon to select an existing account:

Tip 2: To enter credit card information, click the lock icon or Privacy Policy and credit card information will be
populated:

3
Tip 3: After installing OneAgent, you may need to first access the easyTravel application from your browser
manually. If you are running easyTravel locally, it will be helpful during the activities to access easyTravel
manually from time to time, and click links and buttons, access menus, and perform actions in easyTravel.

2.2 Obtain a Grail-enabled Dynatrace SaaS Environment

1. To perform these labs, you will need access to a Grail-enabled environment where OneAgent can be
deployed to monitor the easyTravel application.
2. Log monitoring needs to be enabled.
3. You will need permissions to create and execute DQL queries in the various areas DQL is used within
Dynatrace.

2.3 Install OneAgent

Deploying Dynatrace

1. On the machine where the easyTravel application is running, deploy OneAgent from your Dynatrace
Grail-enabled environment.
2. Install OneAgent in full-stack monitoring mode and enable access to application log-file content.

2.4 Configure Application and Allow Data Generation

a. Review the instructions found in the documentation here: Define your applications for Real
User Monitoring
b. Follow the steps to define an application using the "Suggested Approach”
2. Allow Data Generation. Plan to have easyTravel running with OneAgent installed for a period of time
in advance of starting the labs to ensure there is data generated in Dynatrace.
