ACADEMIC AND CULTURAL EVENTS 2024:

Showcasing Talents beyond the Classroom


Event Proposal

I. RATIONALE:
The purpose of Academic and Cultural Events 2024: Showcasing Talents beyond the Classroom
is to engage students in both academic and cultural activities that can significantly enrich their educational journey. It
allows them to explore their interests and passions, which can lead to a well-rounded and fulfilling life. These events
provide a platform for students to showcase their unique talents and gain recognition, boosting their self-esteem and
motivating them to strive for excellence.

II. OBJECTIVES:
The Academic and Cultural Events 2024: Showcasing Talents beyond the Classroom aims to:
1. increase student involvement in the extracurricular activities,
2. promote critical thinking skills, encourage intellectual growth and enhance academic performance, and
3. help students enhance a diverse set of skills and knowledge, discover their talents, boost confidence, and
enhance social skills.

III. DATES:
The Academic and Cultural Events 2024: Showcasing Talents beyond the Classroom will be

Announcement date:
Announcement of the events will be disseminated to Senior High School Class Presidents.
Registration date:
Registration will be on August 20, 2024, Tuesday, until September 1, 2024.
List of Participants:
List of participants shall be finalized by September 2, 2024 and be submitted to Mrs. Stephanie T. Gravador at the
K-12 Building, 2nd floor faculty room.
Awarding of Winners:
September 30, 2024 during Flag Ceremony (JHS Schedule)

IV. PARTICIPANTS
1. Participants of academic and cultural events are required to adhere strictly to the implemented guidelines.
2. Overall, there are eleven (11) events and each section must have a participant, EXCEPT for musical contests.
3. The entire academic participant shall be in school uniform.
4. Cultural event participants shall be in smart casual attire, EXCEPT essay writing/pagsulat ng sanaysay.

V. CULTURAL EVENTS GUIDELINES


PRE – CONTEST:
1. The Event Chairman shall:
1.1. Get the contest paraphernalia from the Cultural Chairman or designated staff.
1.2. Distribute the materials to the assigned working committee.
2. Event Chairman checks if the contest room is ready with the following requisites:
a. Registration table and chairs
b. Tables and chairs arranged for the judges, folders with score sheets and pencils
c. Seats for the contestants
d. Table and seats for the tabulators
e. Tarpapel
f. Theme written on the board
g. Other facilities like sound system as the event demands
Registration Committee:
1. All the academic contestants shall be in school uniform.
2. During the registration, each contestant shall be given a number, which should be visibly worn for identification.
(Violation of this rule would mean disqualification)
3. Write the contestant’s corresponding number on:
a. the registration form
b. contest piece (for original pieces)
c. taped accompaniment (for musical events)
d. art work (poster making)
e. written work (essay writing)
4. Provide the mastery guide with copies of contest pieces. Original piece must be submitted in 2copies.
Note: Judges shall not be provided with contest pieces, for them to concentrate on judging.

CONTEST PROPER:
The Event Chairman shall:
a. Hold a short opening program at the venue of the event that includes prayer, singing of National Anthem.
b. Read the standards, contest rules and criteria for judging.
c. Introduce the judges.
d. Call on the first contestant to start the performance.
Important Reminders:
1. Allow time for the judges to finish reviewing their scores before allowing the next contestant to recite.
2. The mastery guide shall record the mastery points and the timer shall record the time spent by each contestant.
3. Prohibit giving of snacks to the Board of Judges while a participant is reciting.
4. Prohibit anyone from coming in and / or out the contest room once the contest has started.
5. Prohibit the use of cell phones and other gadgets.
6. Maintain orderliness, silence and fairness throughout the contest.
7. Prohibit heckling and clapping while a contestant is performing. Clapping shall be done for all the contestants before
and after the contest proper.
8. Prohibit taking of pictures and videos while the contest is in progress.
9. Prohibit coaching while a contestant is performing.

POST CONTEST:
I. Computation

2. Computation Procedure
a. The Event Chairman shall read the mastery and/or time records of the contestants.
b. The 2 tabulators shall reflect the same in all the score sheets of the judges.
c. The 2 tabulators shall compute and recheck the score sheet total and rank.
d. The tabulators shall finalize the score sheet ranking for the final rank and place.
e. Tabulator 1 shall announce the winners and Tabulator 2 shall double-check the official result sheet.
Note:
● All tabulators must have calculators.

● The assigned Event Chairman shall supervise the procedure.

● Please refer to the sample ranking system computation, tabulation sheet and official result sheet.
3. The Judges, tabulators, and Chairman of the event must duly sign the official result sheet which shall be used in
announcing the winners.

II. Awarding by the Event Chairman


1. Thank and distribute the certificates to the judges and contestants.
2. Using rechecked and well-accomplished official result sheet, carefully announce and award the winners starting at the
3rd Place. Mention the place won, the contestant’s number, name, grade level and section.
Note: Announce the 1st set of winners before proceeding to the next category or level.
3. The Working Committee headed by the Event Chairman shall protect the judges from any form of harassment.
4. The event chairman shall submit the contest results, copies of original pieces and return all other materials received to
the Cultural Chairman or assigned person in the designated place.
Important Ground Rule:
The Event Chairman shall supervise the entire contest.

VI. ACADEMIC EVENTS GUIDELINES


CONTEST PROPER:

1. All the academic contestants shall be in school uniform.


2. During the registration, each contestant shall be given a number, which should be visibly worn for identification.
(Violation of this rule would mean disqualification)
3. Only the following are allowed inside the contest room:
a. Contest committee headed by the event chairman
b. Quizmaster
c. Contestants
4. Parents and other students are not allowed to watch the proceedings.
5. The contest shall be closed doors.
6. Each participant should bring his/her own 1/8 illustration board covered with plastic cover, board eraser/rag and white
board marker for science, spelling, and black pen for mathematics, the paper will be provided by the committee.
7. A late comer contestant will be allowed to participate in the contest but will be only entitled to answer the question being
given at the time of his arrival.
8. No contestant shall be allowed to write anything after the official timer had signal the “end” of the time allotment. (First
offense violation of this rule would mean “warning” but a correct answer will still be counted. Second offense would
mean disqualification of the answer even if it is right. Third offense would mean disqualification of the contestant)
9. In breaking the tie, the “knock out” system will be followed where the first contestant to answer the first question
correctly will be declared winner in the particular place being tied for.

MUSICAL CONTESTS
1. The contest piece is open to any type of music.
2. Submission of music (minus one) shall be three (3) days before the contest. Prepare a back-up file.
3. There shall be no more screening.
4. Performance shall only be 3-4 minutes for vocal solo and 4-5 minutes for vocal duet.

4. Each contestant shall be given 3 minutes to prepare and 2 – 3 minutes to deliver
5. A board indicating the remaining time will be raised after the first 2 minutes of delivery and the last 30 seconds of the
time limit.
6. A deduction of 0.25 point for every 30 seconds excess in the 3 minute limit and 0.25 point for every 30 second under
time in the 2 minute limit.

ESSAY WRITING/ PAGSULAT NG SANAYSAY


1. Number of Contestants per section:
One in English
One in Filipino
2. The specific topic for each contest will be made known to the contestants right at the start of the contest. Topics are not
based on the theme.
3. The contestants will be given only 60 minutes within which to develop the theme and write their essay.
4. Only the sheets of paper with the signature of authorized Event Chairman should be used and would be considered as
official and valid entry.
5. Late contestants may be admitted but would only be allowed to work on their essay within the time remaining of the 60
min. limit.
6. Materials will be provided by the committee for uniformity.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING

Contents – this refers to the relevant ideas/thoughts put


together to create harmony with the aim of the theme and 30%
topic.

Diction – this refers to the proper choice of words, 30%


expressions, idioms that contribute largely to the creation of
an organized thought/ understanding of the theme

Mechanics – this include correct spelling of words, tenses of


the verbs as well as their correct forms and structures, 30%
punctuation marks and the use of other parts of speech.

Organization – this refers to the general presentation of the


essay that complies with the requirements of neatness, 10%
indention and legibility of penmanship.

GROUND RULES IN SPELLING

1. The contest is open to all Senior High School students. (Grade 11-12)
2. Contestants will have to write in lowercase letters for each word spelling within10 seconds and each correct answer
shall be credited one point. 10 words shall be contributed by each SHS - English Teacher, but only 15 words will be
asked to spell.
3. The quizmaster shall read the word twice and give the part of speech and meaning, use the word in a sentence and
read again.
4. Spelling words should NOT include proper nouns, French words, archaic, slang, colloquial, scientific terms and highly
technical terms.
5. The official timer shall signal the “start” and the contestant shall write their answers on white board. The same official
timer shall signal the “end” of the time allotted for each question by means of a call bell and the contestant shall stop
writing. They shall show their answers in front for checking.
6. Every correct answer shall be credited one point.
7. The event committee and judges/contributors inside the contest room are not allowed to talk with and disturb any of the
contestants while the contest is in progress.

GROUND RULES IN MATHEMATICS

1. The contest is open to all Senior High School students. (Grade 11-12)
2. 3 step word problem 40 second
3. The listed contributors below will submit three (5) questions, but only 15 questions will be asked.
4. Coverage: Basic Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Trigonometry (cover to cover)
Source: Basic Textbooks
5. The question will be read twice.
6. Questions may be directly lifted from textbooks or modified/ rephrased. Textbooks used as references should be
published within six (6) years prior to the date of the contest.
7. The official timer shall signal the “start” and the contestants shall write their answer on yellow pad paper. The official
timer shall signal the “end” of the time allotted for each question by means by a call bell and the contestants shall stop
writing
8. If the contestant fails to write the unit of measure or object/s being called for, his answer shall be considered wrong.
Each contestant is required to show the solution as a proof that he actually solved for the answer. The final answer
must be encircled or boxed.
9. The event committee and judges/contributors inside the contest room are not allowed to talk with and disturb any of the
contestants while the contest is in progress.

GROUND RULES IN SCIENCE

1. Contestants shall answer every question within 30 seconds and each correct answer shall be credited one point. 7-
10questions shall be contributed by each SHS - Science Teacher, but only 15 questions will be asked.
3. Question in science must be situational/application type.
4. Coverage: Science subjects in senior high school such as general science, biology, chemistry and physics (cover to
cover).
5. Each question shall be in multiple choices with four alternatives / options to choose from. “None of these” should not be
included in the choices. The Quizmaster shall read each question twice. The contestant must write the capital letter of the
correct answer on the white board to avoid confusion. Violation of this would mean disqualification of the answer even if it is
correct.
6. The official timer shall signal the “start” and the contestant shall choose and write the letter of the correct answer on the
white board. The official timer shall signal the “end” of the time allotted for each question by means of a call bell and the
contestant shall stop writing their respective answers. They will have to show their answer in front for checking.

b. provide delegates for the upcoming BulPriSA Cultural Competition (Academic Events are for Junior High School
only, but participants may use the certificates for their portfolio.)
