[FOUNDATION SCHOOL LESSONS]
This document contains the foundational teaching according to Hebrews 6:1-2 that are to be taught a young
believer. The document is designed to guide the one who is teaching the new convert. There are other teachings
that are part of the foundational teaching that are not mentioned in Hebrews 6 but are critical for the
wholesome development of the new believer.
REPENTANCE
Luke 3:8, Matt. 7:16-20
Foundation is very important; the strength of a foundation will determine what is built on it. Heb.
6:1
The first Foundation of a Christian is:
REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS- Acts 8:22, Mark 1:14-15
Why do we need repentance? Rom. 6:23, the wages of sin is death
What is repentance?
a) Repentance is turning away from our sin. Luke 15:11-24
b) Confessing of our sins to God
c) Acknowledgement of our sins
d) Feeling of deep sorrow for our sins towards God. Psa. 51:1-11, 1 Jn. 1:8-9, 2:1-2
Who is to repent? Acts 17:30-31, Rom. 3:23
Three levels of repentance
1. Personal level – Rom. 1:19-32 things l have done
2. Family level – Deut. 19:15, Jer. 16:19- things my parents did and are still doing.
3. Clan, race, village and country level – Ezek. 22:1-30, Rom. 1:19, Rev. 21:8
Response: we will repent and ask God for forgiveness.
Steps to repentance
• Acknowledgement of our sin and owing up these sins - Psa. 51
• Feeling of deep sorrow towards these sins towards God and
• Confession made to God by naming these sins and asking for God’s forgiveness – 1 John
1:8-9
• Acknowledgement of the consequence of sin – Rom. 3:23
• Asking for the atonement by the blood of Jesus for your life and your family – 1 John 2:1-2,
Eph. 1:17
Examples genuine confessions
1. Personal sin: David – Psa. 51
2
2. Family, clan, nation: Daniel – Dan. 9
SIGN OF TRUE REPENTANCE
True repentance in a change of lifestyle
a) There must be a forsaking-.
• Saul he confessed his sin but did not forsake- 1 Sam. 24:10-12, 16, 26:2,21
• Ninevah repented and forsook their sins but in Nahum 1, they returned to their sins.
b) Fruit bearing – Luke 3:7-8
c) Be Christ’s witness –Soul winning- 2 Cor. 5:17-22, John 4:24-, Mark 5:1-8, 18-20
• We are saved to help save others.
• They cannot be saved until you tell what Jesus has done for you – Rom. 10:13-15
Benefit of life of witness
• Secure our own faith – Ezek. 3:18
• Power of testimony – Rev. 12:11
What to do to ensure your genuine repentance – Jn. 8:31
Continuity in the word
Note: Repentance is followed by Conversion, Act.3:16. The word ‘converted’ means to be made
in to another form. The process of conversion is completed when your sins are blotted out by
your conversion. Saul’s sin was not blotted out because he was not converted, the same with
Ninevah.

WORD FOUNDATION
Psa. 11:3, Psa. 107:20, John 8:31-32
What foundation is to a building is what God’s word is to us. The Bible is the word of God. The
Bible is made up of the Old 39 books and New Testament 27 books.
The Value of the Word of God
➢ WHAT FOOD AND WATER IS TO OUR BODY IS WHAT THE WORD OF God is to our
spirit and soul – Deut. 4:8, Matt. 4:4
➢ We live by God’s word. If we cannot survive long without food and water, so we cannot
survive spiritually without the word of God.
➢ The word of God causes us to grow like food does to our body – 1 Pet. 2:1-2
➢ The word of God is medicine to our bodies – Prov. 4:20-22
➢ Everything written in the Bible – 2 Tim. 3:16 is inspired by the Holy Ghost
➢ The word is for doctrine, correction and for reproof
Your attitude towards God’s word
Your attitude towards God’s word will determine:
1. How far you will go in your faith – Rom. 10:17
2. How far you will resist sin – Psa. 119:8-11
3. The extent you will overcome the devil – 1 John 5:4, Matt. 4:7
4. The extent you will stand in the time of difficult – Matt. 7:21
5. The extent of change in your character – Acts 5:1
6. The extent you will experience the miraculous – Ezek. 47:2-11
7. The extent to which your life, business, ministry, family, etc. is build – Psa. 127:1
Commanded response to the word of God
Response to the word of God:
1. Continue in the word – John 8:31-32
2. Receive it as the word of God and not the word of men – 1 Thess. 2:13
3. Give attention, spend time on the word – Prov. 4:20, Mark 4:25
4. Read – 1 Tim. 4:13, Joshua 1:8
5. Study – 2 Tim. 2:15
6. Meditate – 1 Tim. 4:15-16, Joshua 1:8
7. Confess – 2 Cor. 4:13, Joshua 1:8, Mark 11:23
4
8. Act – Jas. 1:22-, Joshua 1:8
How to read the Bible
It is better to read the Bible systematically, that means book by book. This way we will have unified
view of the Bible.
You can ensure discipline to your Bible reading by using a reading guide. There are some that
enable you to complete the Bible in one year, others in six months.
Before reading the Bible you must pray to ask for understanding from God.
If you are new in the faith or you are to recommend a reading to a new believer, you need to start
your readings from the gospel of John to understand the concept of salvation.
To study the Bible – 2 Tim. 2:15
You can employ a topical method in the study of the word or life study.
FAITH TOWARDS GOD
1 John 5:4, Isa. 53:1-, John 3:14-16, Num. 21:4-9, Mark 11:22
Definition of faith – Heb. 11:1. Faith is the confident assurance that what you hope for will be yours.
Faith is the weapon of victory – Eph. 6:16.
We are called into a spiritual journey that requires faith if we must arrive safely to our promise land.
Many of the Israelites did not enter the promise land because they did not understand the journey
and what to expect, nor what is required of them, neither do they know how to please God – Heb.
4:1-, Num. 11, Num. 21:7.
Faith is the sixth sense which is based on the word of God Rom. 10:17. Faith does not appeal to
the reasoning; the word of God is immunity to faith. Faith is the opposite of fear and fear comes as
a result of the absence of the revealed word in your life.
Without faith you cannot enjoy victory, for the victory that overcomes the world is our faith 1 John
5:4. The more of God’s word you have, the more faith you have.
God wants us to believe in:
1. His power – Jer. 32:27
2. His love – Rom. 5:8, we are to believe in the power of His love.
3. His word – Psa. 107:20, Heb. 4:12
4. His death, His cross – John 3:14-16, Gal. 3:13, Matt. 11:28-29
5
5. His blood – Rev. 12:11, Heb. 4:14, 22
6. His name – Acts 4:12
7. His nature
8. He is God, He cannot change – Heb. 13:8, Mal. 3:8
9. He cannot lie – Num. 23:19, Titus 1:2
10. He cannot fail – Job 42:3, 1 Chron. 28:20
11. He is the word of God – John 1:1, Matt. 24:35, Isa. 40:8
How faith works
1. You live only by faith – Hab. 2:4
2. Confess – Rom. 10:9, believe = action Jas. 2:14, Luke 3:4
3. God deposit a measure or seed of faith the day you receive Christ
4. You must confess your faith – 2 Cor. 13:4
5. You put action to your faith – Jas. 2:14
How does faith come?
Rom. 10:17 comes, hence read Prov. 4:20
Hearing until you have heard
Meditate – 1 Tim. 4:13-15
Trail of faith – 1 Pet. 1:6-7, 1 Pet. 4:13-16, Rom. 4:16-20, Jas. 1:2-4
Example of trail of faith:
Apostles – Acts 5:41, Mark 4:35 and Job – Job 2:20, Job 42:10
INTRODUCTION TO A LIFE OF PRAYER
Matt. 21:13, Gen. 3:8-9, Rev. 4:11
Introduction
Man was originally made for fellowship with God as the only way to draw life and strength to fulfil
his God given assignment, to dominate the world and rule as king over all God’s creation. It was
not surprising that the moment man lost fellowship or no longer kept company with God he died
and automatically lost power and control over his world. He became a slave in the same place he
used to be master. So the primary reason of the death of Jesus is to restore man’s fellowship with
God as the only means of regaining back the lost dominion. So the journey to a victorious life of
power begins with the restoration of fellowship and intimacy with God – Psa. 66:3.
The people who lived in dominion in their time were mighty men and women of prayer. It is said a
prayerful Christian is a powerful Christian but a prayerless Christian is a powerless Christian.
6
Why is a functional prayer life a must for every believer?
1. Because it is the only means of a life of power and victory in this battle of life – Jas. 5:16
2. It is the medium through which we commune with God and draw from His presence into
situations for without Him, we can do nothing – John 15:5, Psa. 127:1
3. God has ordained that the means of receiving is through asking. The reason we are lacking
is due to our prayerlessness – Jas. 4:2, Matt. 7:7, Jas. 1:5
4. No promise or prophecy is fulfilled without someone labouring for it in prayer – Gen. 22:15,
Gen. 25:21
5. It is sin if you do not pray; it means you are telling God you can really do without Him, which
is as well pride.
6. It’s the channel through which all grace is released into our life – Heb. 4:16, Heb. 12:28
7. Jesus our Master modelled for us a life of prayer – Heb. 5:7, Luke 11:1-. If the very Son of
God depended on prayer to make it, what then is our basis for prayerlessness? When even
the disciples gave themselves wholly to prayer and ministry of God’s word. We have no
reason not to do the same – Acts 6:9-10
8. So that our life and churches will not turn to a den of robbers – Matt. 23:13
Definition of prayer
• Prayer is communication with God, discussion with God, dialogue – Gen. 18:13, 18, 23-30
• Taking God’s word and sending it back to Him and demanding Him to confirm it – Psa.
119:41, 49
• It can also be defined as expressing your feelings to the One who loves you and cares for
you – Songs of Sol. 1
• Prayer is sharing love with God in such a deep passion that words alone cannot express. It
involves undressing before Him and allowing Him to brood over your formlessness until it is
formed – Gen. 1:2-3.
Prayer time
Prayer as a lifestyle begins with a habit of a prayer time
No one can obey the command of Christ to prayer without ceasing, without cultivating a
habit of spending time alone with God.
Examples of people who maintained a prayer time
i. Abraham – Gen. 18:22
ii. Paul – Eph. 1:16, Eph. 3:14, 1 Thess. 3:10
iii. Jesus – Mark 1:35, Luke 11:1
iv. Daniel – Dan. 6:10
You need to set a fixed time to meet with God daily, Daniel met three times with God; David met
seven times with God. So when do you meet with your God?
Whichever time that is best for you but it must be a time and place you could really communicate
with God without distraction from the inside (you) or the outside (from the environment)
Things you need to maximise your time with God
7
▪ Your spirit, soul and body
▪ Your Bible
▪ Your note book and pen
▪ A quiet place
The content of a real prayer
1. Acknowledgement of our sonship relationship – John 1:12, especially if we have separated
thoroughly from our sin and the world – 2 Cor. 6:14, Rom. 8:14
2. Thanksgiving – Psa. 100:4, Phil. 4:6. Thanksgiving opens the gates to God’s presence and
brings us from outside to inside. While praise brings us to the court. If we forget His benefits
He forgets our needs.
3. The place of God’s will before our will and desire – 1 John 5:14, Eph. 1:4-8, 1 Tim. 2:3
4. Provision for the day – spiritual, physical or emotional needs
5. Forgiveness must be sort for – Heb. 4:16, Mark 11:25
6. Deliverance sort from evil and victory over temptation
7. Prayer should also end with praise as a stamp or signature, otherwise it will be disqualified
– Phil. 4:6
8. Prayer must involve a time of listening – Psa. 46:10

SOUL WINNING
2 Cor. 5:17-21, Matt. 28:18-19, Eph. 1:7-
In Eph. 1:10 reveals that even before man sin, God had planned for his redemption and restoration
through Christ’s death at the fullness of time. So, Jesus’ coming into the world was to accomplish
this purpose of reconciling us back to God and each one reconciled is given a ministry to do the
same to others – 1 Cor. 5:18. So salvation comes with a responsibility and is not complete without
accepting the attached responsibility.
Why is soul winning a must for every believer?
It is a command from God – Matt. 28:18-19, Mark 16:15
To save our soul from the judgment of God for murder – Ezek. 3:17-19
The only way to give sinners an opportunity to escape eternal death – Rev. 21:8, Psa. 9:17,
Rom. 1:16, Rom. 10:13-
We are made to be fruitful – Gen. 1:28, John 15:16
We are called for the purpose of winning souls – Matt. 4:19
10
You are Christ’s ambassador – 2 Cor. 5:20-21
Time is short – John 9:4, Rev. 12:12
What do you need to be an effective soul winner?
1. Vision – John 4:45. You need to see the field of the lost souls
2. Knowledge – Acts 26:16-18. You need to know the state of the sinner
3. Prayer – Matt. 10:39. You must know that soul winning is warfare and Satan is not willing to
release his captives like Pharaoh when he was asked to let Israel go. You must pray for the
sinner you want God to save through, your force is required to free the prisoner – Luke
11:21, Jas. 5:16, Matt. 11:12
Methods of evangelism
There are many methods employed in soul winning, we will mention a few popular ones:
i. Use your testimony – Mark 5:19-20, John 4:28-30
ii. Andrew’s method – John 1:40-, begin with your family and friends
iii. Paul’s method – Acts 20:20, Acts 5:42, publicly and house to house
iv. Jesus command – Luke 14:23
v. Through literature distri+bution, through sms, phone
What is the message?
Christ Jesus should be the centre of the message not the church or doctrine. It must be the
message of repentance towards God and faith towards our Lord Jesus – Mark 1:15.
STEWARDSHIP
A steward is a caretaker, keeper, supervisor of someone’s property
We are God’s steward
God owns everything – Psa. 24:1, 1 Chron. 29:10-14. We are not owners but stewards or
caretakers. Every single thing, material, immaterial that we have in this life belongs to God, even
our life.
1. Our life – Eccl. 12:1, Rev. 4:11, Acts 17:25, 1 Cor. 6:19, Gal. 2:20
2. Our time – Eccl. 3:1, Psa. 90:12, Eph. 5:15, Col. 4:5, 2 Sam. 11:1
3. His word – 1 Cor. 4:1-2, Matt. 28:19
4. Our talents and abilities – 1 Pet. 4:10, 1 Cor. 12:4-7
5. Our possession – Matt. 6:19-21, Col. 3:12-25
6. Our finances – Mal. 3:8-18, Gal. 6:6-9, 1 Tim. 6:6-10, 17-19, Matt. 6:24
7. Our spirit, soul and body – 2 Cor. 6:20, Rom. 12:1-2
If you are to enjoy God’s full blessing as a steward we must obey His instruction on the use of
these things, remember 2 Cor. 4:3
11
Faithfulness required
We are required as stewards to be faithful because the day of accountability is coming – Luke 16:1-
.
God rewards faithfulness – Matt. 24:45-46, Matt. 25:20-21, Luke 16
God has a purpose for your life and everything He gave you is for His glory and for the
blessing of others – Gen. 12:1-3, John 9:4, 31-36
• Use your time, money, talent, ability to serve God by investing in His work, in the life of
others
• Your giving reveals your value of God – Gen. 4:1 and reveals your love for God.
BE A FAITHFUL STEWARD!!!
RESURRECTION
Job 14:14, 1 Cor. 15:1-end, Heb. 9:27
• Job asked a question to know if there is life after death, he asked “if a man die, shall he live
again” and God answers Job’s question for us in 1 Cor. 15:1-end.
• See the nature of man – 1 Cor. 15:1-end, Gen. 1:26
o Man – spirit, soul and body
• Death means separation from the body
• Heb. 9:27, everyone must die whether rich or poor
• After death you appear for personal judgment and accountability
o Righteous go through the judgment of our works – 1 Cor. 3:9-15, Rom. 8:1,
• Your destination is determined before death – John 3:18-19
• Eternal life in paradise or Hades – Psa. 9:17, Luke 12:4-5, Luke 16:19-end, Heb.
o Paradise an abode for the righteous people who departed from this world
o Hell or Hades is a place of torment and an abode of the wicked and all who die without
Christ till the resurrection
First Resurrection
• At the last trumpet – 1 Thess. 4:13-18, 2 Thess. 2:5-7
• The believer will rise from death with a new body to meet Christ and the ones alive shall
change this body to a spiritual body and will be ruptured together. The rest of the dead will
not live until the final judgment day – Dan. 12:2-3, Rev. 20:4-5, 12
Read Rev. 4 & 5 in preparation for the teaching on Judgment
Question
Where will you spend eternity?
12
How are you living now?
ETERNAL JUDGMENT
This happens after the millennium reign of Christ. God will finally judge all who ever lived on
the planet earth according to their works. This is known as the great white throne judgment.
Note: The believers own judgment of sin has been accomplished by Christ on the cross –
John 5:24, John 3:17-19
The devil and his angels judged – Dan. 12:2-3, Matt. 10:15, Jude 6, Rev. 20:15
HELL FIRE
This is a place of everlasting punishment where all whose names are not in the book of life
are thrown into to suffer torment forever and ever.
It was prepared for the devil and his angels originally – Matt. 25:41, but God has decreed
that all the wicked and those who reject Christ and forget God will be cast there also – Psa.
9:17, Matt. 25:46, Luke 12:4-5, Rev. 14:10-11, Rev. 20:12-15.
HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH
Job 22:12, Psa. 3:19
This is place of abode of God and the redeemed.
A place where righteousness dwells, this present earth that is polluted by sin is passing away –
Rev. 21:1, 2 Pet. 3:10-13, Isa. 51:6, Isa. 65:17, 2 Cor. 5:1.
OVERCOMING TRAILS/ TEMPTATION
God never said there wouldn’t be trails but He promised us victory. You should not paint a picture
of how the trail will come, but rather you should train yourself to be rugged. There is a difference
between trail and temptation
• Temptation means allurement to sin, while trail means test
• Temptation is not sin but yielding to it is sin
• Temptation is intended to make you fall, while trail is aimed at promotion, and they come
from different source
The source and purpose of temptation/trail
• Jas. 1:2-4, 12-15; God tests our faith but the devil tempts our faith
o God’s test is a test of our obedience and love, every confession I make will be
tested
• An example of Satan’s temptation - 1 John 2:15, Gal. 5:19-21
13
o 2 Cor. 2:11 – lack of total surrender, like he did to Israel (Exod. 8:25, 28, 10:11, 24-
26 Ezra 4:1). God wants us to surrender all, whatever you withholding keeps you in
bondage and you cannot be released until you surrender all to God. Whatever you
withhold becomes an idol. Partial obedience is equal to total disobedience.
• An example of trail like we see in the life of Abraham – Gen. 22:1-; David – 1 Sam. 30:; Saul
was tested with delay – 1 Sam. 15:
How do we overcome temptation?
• Love God (submission) – 1 John 2:15, Jas. 4:41, 1 Tim. 6:6-11
• Know that the victory is already won – 1 John 5:4, 2 cor. 10:13. There is no temptation that
comes to me that is not common to men (the one you are facing is not special), and God
will surely not allow me to be tempted more than I can bear, with every temptation God has
made a way of escape
• Submit to God – Jas. 4:7 and keep away from obvious areas of temptation – Psa. 101:3, 1
Tim. 6:9-11
• There must be a prayer lifestyle, because grace comes through prayer and is multiplied
through revelation knowledge
LAYING ON OF HANDS
