Regions of the Philippines

*BACKGROUND
 17 Regions
 Regions first came to existence on September 24, 1972, when the provinces of the
Philippines were organized into eleven regions under Presidential Decree No. 1 as
part of the Integrated Reorganization Plan of President Ferdinand Marcos. Since
that time, other regions have been created and some provinces have been
transferred from one region to another.
*DISCUSSION
 REGION I (Ilocos Region) - Designated as Region I , is an administrative region of
the Philippines. Located in the northwestern section of Luzon, it is bordered by the
Cordillera Administrative Region to the east, the Cagayan Valley to the northeast
and southeast, Central Luzon to the south, and the West Philippine Sea to the
west.
PROVINCES: Ilocos Norte , Ilocos Sur , La Union , Pangasinan
 CAR (Cordillera Administrative Region) - Is an administrative region in the
Philippines, situated within the island of Luzon. It is the only landlocked region in
the archipelago, bordered by the Ilocos Region to the west and southwest, and by
the Cagayan Valley Region to the north, east, and southeast.
Smallest Population: 1,791,121 .
PROVINCES: Abra , Apayao , Benguet , Ifugao , Kalinga , Mountain Province
 REGION II (Cagayan Valley) - Lambak ng Cagayan, designated as Region II, is an
administrative region in the Philippines. Located in the northeastern section of
Luzon.
PROVINCES: Batanes , Cagayan , Isabela , Nueva Vizcaya , Quirino
 REGION III (Central Luzon) - The region contains the largest plain in the country
and produces most of the country's rice supply, earning itself the nickname "Rice
Granary of the Philippines". It is also the region to have the most number of
provinces.
PROVINCES: Aurora , Bataan , Tarlac , Zambales , Bulacan , Nueva Ecija ,
Pampanga
 NCR (National Capital Regional) - Metro Manila is the capital region and largest
metropolitan area of the Philippines. Located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay,
the region lies between the Central Luzon and Calabarzon regions. NCR does not
have provinces, instead it is made up of 17 local government units (LGUs) which
are cities and a municipality cities in the NCR.
CITIES: Manila the capital city , Caloocan , Las Pinas , Makati , Malabon ,
Mandaluyong , Marikina , Muntinlupa , Navotas , Paranaque , Pasay , Pasig ,
Quezon City , San Juan , Taguig , Valenzuela and 1 independent municipality Pateros
 REGION IV A (CALABARZON)- It is the most populous region in the Philippines,
according to the 2020 census (PSA), with over 16.1 million inhabitants. It is also
the country's second most densely populated region, after the National Capital
Region.
PROVINCES: Cavite , Laguna , Batangas , Rizal , Quezon
 REGION IV B (MIMAROPA) - It is the only region in the country outside the Visayas
that has no land border with another region.
PROVINCES: Mindoro , Marinduque , Romblon , Palawan
 REGION V (Bicol Region) - The regional center is Legazpi, the most populous city
in the region and has one independent component city, the pilgrim city of Naga.
PROVINCES: Albay , Camarines Sur , Camarines Norte , Catanduanes , Masbate ,
Sorsogon
 REGION VI (Western Visayas) - The region comprises the islands of Panay and
Guimaras.The region also includes one highly urbanized city, Iloilo City, which is
the largest city and serves as the regional center.
PROVINCES: Aklan , Antique , Capiz , Guimaras , Iloilo , Negros Occidental
 REGION VII (Central Visayas) - It is the most populous region in the Visayas, with
a population of 6,545,603. The region is also dominated by the native speakers of
three Visayan languages: Bantayanon, Boholano and Porohanon.
PROVINCES: Cebu , Bohol (NIR – Negros Island Region) Negros Oriental , Siquijor
 REGION VIII (Eastern Visayas) - Its population as determined by the 2020 Census
was 4,547,150. This represented 22.09% of the overall population of the Visayas
island group, or 4.17% of the entire population of the Philippines.
PROVINCES: Biliran , Eastern Samar , Northern Samar , Southern Leyte , Leyte ,
Samar
 REGION IX (Zamboanga Peninsula) - During the ancient era, the Zamboanga
peninsula was a vast territory home to various ethnic groups – the largest of which
was the Subanen people.
PROVINCES: Zamboanga Del Norte , Zamboanga Del Sur , Zamboanga Sibugay
 REGION X (Northern Mindanao) - Is an administrative region in the Philippines
occupying the northern-central section of Mindanao.The regional center is the
City of Cagayan de Oro.
PROVINCES: Camiguin , Bukidnon , Lanao Del Norte , Misamis Occidental ,
Misamis Oriental
 REGION XI (Davao Region) - Is an administrative region in the Philippines
occupying the southeastern section of Mindanao.
PROVINCES: Davao Del Sur , Davao Del Norte , Davao Oriental , Davao
Occidental , Compostela Valley
 REGION XII (SOCCSKSARGEN) - Is an administrative region in the Philippines
occupying the southern-central section of Mindanao.The regional center is the
City of Koronadal.
PROVINCES: South Cotabato , Cotabato , Sultan Kudarat , Sarangani , General
Santos
 REGION XIII (Caraga Region) - Is an administrative region in the Philippines
occupying the northeastern section of Mindanao. The regional center is the City of
Butuan.
PROVINCES: Agusan Del Norte , Agusan Del Sur , Dinagat Island , Surigao Del
Norte, Surigao Del Sur
 BARRM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao - The
Bangsamoro, officially the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao
(BARMM) is an autonomous region located in the southern Philippines. Replacing
the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The BARMM consists of
five predominantly Muslim provinces. It is the only region in the Philippines that
has its own government.
