HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
Maputi, once part of Bitaogan, San Isidro, Davao Oriental, has a rich history of
perseverance and community spirit. Before it became a barangay, the schoolchildren
of Sitio Maputi faced a challenging five-kilometer walk to Bitaogan Elementary
School due to the lack of regular transportation. This hardship was alleviated by the
generous act of Victorio Peñaranda, a resident philanthropist, who, recognizing the
difficulties faced by the children, donated a two-hectare parcel of land for a new
school site on March 25, 1967. The land, initially owned by Cornelio Almeñe and
sold to Peñaranda, was not formally documented due to the scarcity of notaries at
the time, yet it was still successfully registered with the Department of Education
through Governor Generoso's town.
In the same year, Sitio Maputi was officially designated as a barangay. By
April, the community, embodying the spirit of Bayanihan, constructed a two-room
PTA school building using indigenous materials. This school was later named after
the late Jose P. Laurel Sr., the second President of the Republic of the Philippines,
by the highest official of the Pantukan District in the Division of Davao.
By June 1967, the school had begun offering a multigrade class, combining
first and second grades under the guidance of Mr. Anglaser, marking its recognition
as a Primary School. Over the years, the school expanded, adding a third grade
without additional teachers, and subsequently a fourth grade, which led to the
appointment of another teacher to manage the combined Grades 3 and 4. The
dedication of early educators like Mrs. Cerila Angana, Mrs. Corazon Cuaresma, Mrs.
Lagang, Ms. Aurora Tiongson, Mr. Margarito Guting, Elsa Goting, Mr. Heracleo
Pedon, Justina A. Fuerzas, Lesfeminda Hernando, and Ms. Dolores Mazo, who
served an impressive 35 years, helped shape the school's foundation.
In 2006, a concerted effort led by Barangay Captain Honorable Nestor P.
Pondias, the District Supervisor, and Teacher-in-Charge Ms. Mazo resulted in the
addition of Grades 5 and 6, though the school continued to operate as a combination
grade school. A year later, Mr. Norberto Cagas was appointed as the school's
principal.
The 2011-2012 academic year marked a significant improvement in the school's
facilities, with the construction of two new school buildings under the KALAHI-CIDSS
and DepEd Standard programs. By 2013, a pre-school building was erected,
opening its doors in January 2014 under the leadership of Manuel S. Quijano.
In 2017, under the guidance of Rosalia B. Lazo, the school transitioned into a
complete monograde institution with eight teachers. Under her leadership, the school
gained recognition for its academic achievements, earning second place in the
Division-Wide Search for the Most Improved School in 2018 (Small School Category)
and second place in the 2019 Gulayan sa Paaralan Program at the municipal level.
Lazo's efforts extended beyond academics; she successfully secured a land title
from the Land Registration Authority for the school's property, a monumental
achievement in solidifying the school's legacy.
Through her vivid visions and strong commitment to public service, this institution
passed the School Based Management (SBM) Level 2 on October 28, 2021. A year
later, it is quite evident in the transformation she made in her station she is assigned
to. She led the school into new heights with the successful conversion of the school
from Jose P. Laurel Elementary School to Jose P. Laurel Integrated School on July
19, 2022 which democratizes quality education in the elementary and secondary
level. Her strategic actions led to the significant increase in the enrollment. Present
school year logged the officially enrolled learners of 125 with 95 from the elementary
and 35 of the junior high school. Augmented number of admissions evidently is the
impact of the opening of Grade 9 for present school year. In connection, teachers
also increase its numbers with 8 teachers in the elementary and 3 teachers of the
secondary including one none -teaching personnel for administrative works.
As an inclusive school, learners with different backgrounds, cultures and ethnic
groups are now growing also its figures. This school’s program intensifies the
registered IPED learners. Thus, systematic enactment of varied programs,
innovations and campaigns created an exciting output. The dramatic improvement in
the academic performance of learners resulted the exemplary achievements and
winnings of both curricular and extra-curricular competitions.
In addition, to grasp the conducive learning environment, new building for the
secondary is now its phase waiting for construction. This project when finalized
