Maritime Technology Terms Explained

Here are the definitions of the maritime technology terms you requested;

1.)Oil
- Definition: A viscous, combustible liquid, typically
found in natural deposits and used for fuel,
lubrication, and other purposes. It can be refined to
produce various products like gasoline, diesel, and
kerosene.

2.)Crude Oil
- Definition: Petroleum as it occurs naturally, before it
has been refined or processed. This unrefined oil is
extracted from oil wells and transported to refineries
for processing.

3.)Oily Mixture
- Definition: Any mixture containing oil in any form. This
can include bilge slops, oily wastes, oil residues
(sludge), oily ballast water, and washings from cargo
oil tanks.

4.)Oil Fuel
- Definition: Oil used as fuel for machinery on a vessel.
This includes oil used for propulsion and auxiliary
machinery.
5.)Oil Tanker
- Definition: A large ship designed for the bulk transport
of oil or its products. There are two main types: crude
tankers, which carry unrefined crude oil, and product
tankers, which carry refined oil products.

6.)Crude Oil Tanker

- Definition: A specialized vessel designed to transport
large quantities of unrefined crude oil from production
sites to refineries or distribution centers around the
world.

7.)Product Carrier
- Definition: An oil tanker engaged in the trade of
carrying oil other than crude oil. These tankers
typically transport refined oil products like gasoline,
diesel, and kerosene.

8.)Combination Carrier
- Definition: A ship designed to carry either oil or solid
cargoes in bulk. These vessels are equipped to
handle both liquid and dry cargo, allowing for greater
flexibility in shipping operations.

9.)Nearest Land
- Definition: Refers to the baseline from which the
territorial sea of a country is established according to
international law. This is used in maritime regulations
to define distances from land for various purposes.

10.)Specific Areas
- Definition: In the context of maritime technology, this
term refers to designated areas with specific
regulations or restrictions. These areas are often
defined by geographical boundaries and may have
rules related to shipping, pollution control, or other
maritime activities.

11.)Tank
- Definition: A large, sealed container used for storing
liquids, such as oil, on a ship. Tanks are typically
made of steel and are designed to withstand pressure
and the movement of the ship.
12.)Wing Tank
- Definition: A tank located on the side of a ship,
typically used for carrying oil. Wing tanks are often
found in combination carriers, allowing for the
transportation of both oil and dry cargo.

13.)Center Tank
- Definition: A tank located in the center of a ship,
typically used for carrying oil. Center tanks are often
found in crude oil tankers, where they provide the
primary storage for the cargo.

14.)Slope Tank
- Definition: A tank with a sloped bottom, designed to
facilitate the drainage of liquids. Slope tanks are often
used for carrying oil products that may contain
sediment or other impurities.

15.)Clean Ballast
- Definition: Ballast water that is free of oil or other
contaminants. Clean ballast is used to maintain the
stability of a ship when it is not carrying cargo.

16.)Segregated Ballast
- Definition: A system for managing ballast water on a
ship, where ballast water is carried in separate tanks
from cargo tanks. This helps to prevent the
contamination of ballast water with oil or other cargo
residues.
