Gothic literature and the supernatural

The supernatural is crucial for the novel. The ghosts and spirits have a key role in Emily Bronte’s
book. The dead refuse to leave the world of the living and haunt them. This is theme is typical for the
Gothic tales. But unlike them, sometimes these hauntings are welcomed . For example, Heathcliff
wants to be see the spirit of Catherine

Nature and Civilization

In the novel is shown that nature is stronger than the human civilization. This presented through the
characters. Some of them take the side of nature, while other- of cilivization. For instance Heathcliff
is on the nature’s side, while Edgar represents the civilization.Heathcliff is describes as much stronger
than Edgar. But nothing is only one-sided. Nature is shown as purer but cilivization is praised because
of the importance of education. Some character represent both nature and civilization – like Hareton.

Love and passion

There are many kinds of love in Wuthering Heights. The one between Heathcliff and Catherine is
extremely passionate, while the one between Catherine and Edgar is more civilized. The relationship
between Cathy and Linton is a grotesque exaggeration of that between Cathy’s parents. The love
between Cathy and Hareton balanced and combines features of the other loves in the novel.

Revenge

Almost all of the major actions in the novel are a result of someone’s revenge towards other
character. This cycle repeats itself and it even seems that it will never . For example Heathcliff wants
to take revenge on Edgar for marrying Catherine by marrying Cathy and Linton.

Heathcliff is the antihero. He is a gypsy, adopted by Mr Earnshaw and is in love with Catherine. But
when she decides to marry Edgar, he starts seeking revenge. He is driven by emotions, passionate,
vengeful and selfish.

Only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! . . . It is unutterable! I cannot live
without my life! I cannot live without my soul

You loved me—then what right had you to leave me?- passionate

‘I want you to be aware that I know you have treated me infernally—infernally! . . . and if you think I
can be consoled by sweet words, you are an idiot: and if you fancy I’ll suffer unrevenged, I’ll convince
you of the contrary, in a very little while! Meantime, thank you for telling me your sister-in-law’s
secret: I swear I’ll make the most of it.’- selfish vengeful

Catherine is the main main female character in the novel. She is madly in love with Heathcliff but
decides to marry Edgar Linton. She is describes as beautiful, free-spirited, passionate,arrogant, self
centred

. Mylove for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath:


a source of little visible delight, but necessary- passionate,
“I have not broken your heart—you have broken it; and in
breaking it, you have broken mine. So much the worse
for me that I am strong.”
I’m tired of being enclosed here. I’m wearying to escape
into that glorious world, and to be always there: not seeing
it dimly through tears, and yearning for it through the walls
of an aching heart: but really with it, and in it.
