Text:
The Algerian Freedom Fighter
Djamila Bouhired
One of the most famous and outstanding figures in the history of the Algerian revolution
“Djamila Bouhired”. She is an Algerian militant and freedom fighter. She was born in “El-
Kasbah”, Algiers on June 1935. She was born to an Algerian father and a Tunisian mother.
Djamila Bouhired started her national struggle against the French colonisation since a very
young age. She joined the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) when the Algerian
revolution broke out in 1954.
Djamila was a faithful, smart and courageous woman. She was the first volunteer to plant
a bomb in the roads used by the French military occupation. Due to her European appearance,
this brave freedom fighter was able to pass through the roadblocks set by the French
authorities. She was also involved in the battle of Algiers which occured in 1957. On April
9th, 1957, Djamila Bouhired was arrested by the French army. Her imprisonment drew
regional and international media attention. Many people marched in the streets and asked for
her liberty. Following the pressure on the colonial French regime, she was released in 1962.
This self confident freedom fighter was an important part in the struggle for independence
and the dignity of Algeria and is still a very significant figure that calls for protest to improve
legal, social, political and economic situation of Algerian people particularly women’s rights.
