The laboratory design of mixture was catried out in accoldance with the
specification demands and.as
described in following paragraphs.

The physical properties of granite aggregates, quarry dust from Madujaya


eua,y Scln. Bhd. and Hydrated
Lime from universal Lime Sdn. Bhd. were tested using methods as stated
in thespecifications.
These tests
were mainly calried out by independent and some by Kamunting Premix's
laboratory. The testi,g results are
summarized in the followings paragraphs.

Sieve analysis were caffied out to obtain the truly representative grading for each individual type of
coarse and fine aggregates. These grading were adopted for blending the combined grading within the
specified grading lirnits. Prior to laboratory trial mix w'ork.

.A series of combined grading were blended and testings rvere carried out on these grading to find orit
its void properties. From these results, the combined grading with the best void properties was selected
for carrying out the laboratory trial mix design. The desired combinecl grading comprises the following
propoltions of aggregates as given below:

The adopted grading as shown in enclosed graph, was then blended and full scale laboratory trial rnixes

were carried and in accordance with the Marshall method as stated in specificatiorr.

Four samples at each bitumen content ranging from 4.0 Yo to 6.00h were prepared and compacted to 75
blows at both end of the specimens. Out of these four specimens, the test result of three of the more
consistent samples were selected and the one which was obviously erratic was discarded.

The }u{arshall pioperties of the compacted specimen are s'rimmarised in the tables A.1,0.2 and 0,3.
From these results, the average value of (1) Density, (2) Stability, (3) VIM, (4) VFB and (S)Flow
at each bitumen content are plotted shown in enclosed graph, the mean optimum bitumen content is
calculated as given below:
