Common Gases

The document outlines the topic of chemical and physical changes in matter for Class 5 students, focusing on common gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen. It details the uses of each gas, including carbon dioxide in photosynthesis and beverages, oxygen for respiration and medical use, hydrogen as a clean fuel, and nitrogen for food preservation and fertilizer production. The aim is to help learners understand the properties and applications of these gases.

Class 5 Academic Year: 2023-24 Science

The City School

Handout Number: Science 1.7.2
Topic: Chemical and Physical Changes in Matter
Name: Class:

Learners will be able to:

1.7.2. Understand that substances can be gaseous and know the common gases at the temperature (limited to oxygen, carbon dioxide, water (vapour), nitrogen and hydrogen.

. Common Gases and Their Uses

Uses of Carbon dioxide:
• Plants use carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
• Carbon dioxide is used in carbonated beverages, giving them
fizz.
• It is also used in fire extinguishers to displace oxygen and extinguish fires.
Uses of Oxygen:
• Humans and animals need oxygen to breathe and survive.
• Oxygen is used in medical settings to aid in respiration and hospitals
during surgeries.
• It is also used in the process of combustion, such as in welding and
cutting metals.
Uses of Hydrogen:
• It is also used as a fuel in fuel cells, producing electricity cleanly and efficiently.
• Hydrogen is used in the refining of petroleum and other chemical processes.
• It is gas at room temperature, but it becomes a liquid when it
is cold. The liquid can become so cold, it can give you
frostbite.
Uses of Nitrogen:
• It is widely used in the food industry to preserve freshness by
displacing oxygen.
• Nitrogen is used in the production of ammonia, which is further used in
fertilizers.
• It is used in food packaging
