Lesson: How to Write an Explanation Text
What is an Explanation Text?
An explanation text tells the reader how something works or why something happens. It gives clear
and logical information about a topic.
Features of an Explanation Text:
- Title: Clearly states the topic (e.g., "How a Volcano Erupts").
- Opening Statement: Introduces what will be explained.
- Sequenced Steps or Paragraphs: Explains the process in order.
- Diagrams or Illustrations (optional): Helps to visualize the explanation.
- Technical Vocabulary: Uses words related to the topic.
- Conclusion (optional): Summarizes the explanation.
Structure of an Explanation Text
1. Title
Example: How a Rainbow Forms
2. Opening Statement
This sentence introduces the topic clearly.
Example: "Rainbows are beautiful natural phenomena that appear after it rains. They are created
when sunlight passes through raindrops."
3. Detailed Explanation
- Use logical steps to explain the process.
- Use time connectives (first, then, next, finally).
- Use present tense verbs.
Example:
"First, sunlight enters a raindrop and bends. Then, the light reflects inside the drop and separates
into different colors. Finally, the light exits the raindrop, creating a rainbow in the sky."
4. Conclusion (optional)
Example: "Rainbows are a wonderful result of light bending in water droplets, creating a colorful
arc in the sky."

How Bees Make Honey
Bees are hardworking insects that produce honey, which is a sweet food enjoyed by humans and
animals. The process of making honey involves several steps.
Step | Process
------|----------------------------------------------------------
1 | Worker bees collect nectar from flowers using their long tongues.
2 | They store the nectar in a special stomach and return to the hive.
3 | Inside the hive, the bees pass the nectar to other worker bees, who chew it to break down the
sugars.
4 | They store the liquid nectar in honeycomb cells.
5 | The bees fan their wings over the cells to evaporate water, turning the nectar into thick honey.
6 | Finally, they seal the honeycomb with wax to keep the honey fresh.
This is how bees make honey, which is later harvested by beekeepers for people to enjoy.
Practice Activity
Write an explanation text on one of the following topics:
1. How plants grow from seeds
2. How clouds form
3. How a bicycle works
Use the structure we learned today. Remember to include an opening statement, logical steps, and
a conclusion. Good luck!
