Question 3: Give three examples of sedimentary rocks.
Answer: Three examples of sedimentary rocks are sandstone, shale, and limestone.
Question 4: Name three non-metallic minerals.
Answer: Three non-metallic minerals are quartz, gypsum, and calcite.
Question 5: Define fossil fuels. Give examples.
Answer: Fossil fuels are formed from the decayed remains of plants and animals
under high pressure and heat over millions of years. Examples include coal, oil, and
natural gas.
Question 6: What are the uses of coal?
Answer: Coal is used as a fuel for electricity generation, in the production of steel,
and in various industrial processes.
Broad Question Answer:

Question 1: Explain the formation of igneous rocks.


Answer: Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or
lava. The magma can cool inside the earth to form intrusive igneous rocks or it can
erupt onto the surface from volcanoes and cool rapidly to form extrusive igneous
rocks.
Question 2: What are the different types of sedimentary rocks?
Answer: Sedimentary rocks are classified by the processes that form them: clastic
(formed from fragments of other rocks), chemical (formed from mineral crystals
precipitated from solution), and organic (formed from the remains of living things).
Question 3: List one difference between metallic and non-metallic minerals. State
three uses of metallic minerals.
Answer: One key difference is that metallic minerals typically conduct electricity and
heat, whereas non-metallic minerals do not. Three uses of metallic minerals include:
1. Iron is used to make steel.
2. Copper is used in electrical wiring.
3. Aluminum is used for packaging and in transportation (aircraft).
Question 4: How is coal formed?
Answer: Coal is formed from the buried remains of plants that accumulate in swamp
environments. Over millions of years, these plant materials are subjected to high heat
and pressure, transforming them into coal.
Question 5: List two uses each of obsidian, quartzite, slate, and petroleum.
Answer:
• Obsidian: Used for making sharp blades and in decorative items.
• Quartzite: Used in construction for roofing and flooring, and as railway
ballast.
• Slate: Used for roofing materials and as a writing slate in older educational
practices.
• Petroleum: Used to produce fuels like gasoline and diesel, and as a raw
material in the chemical industry to make plastics and other synthetic materials.
