The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 41: A Reputation for Filial Piety
Benefits and risks always coexist. When the risks far
outweigh the potential benefits, giving up becomes
inevitable.
“I’ll return the money I received and won’t interfere with
your household’s affairs,” Liu Xianggu tempered her
attitude and made a promise to the young lady before her.
If this little miss wasn’t from a noble family, she could have
easily stolen her livelihood. Liu Xianggu knew she couldn’t
afford to offend her.
Jiang Si shook her head.
If it was just this, why would she have wasted so much
breath on this person?
“What do you mean, Miss—”
The exquisitely featured young lady smiled brightly at Liu
Xianggu: “Has Xianggu forgotten? You accepted my tea
money.”
Liu Xianggu was stunned for a moment, then hurriedly
took out the neatly folded banknote from her bosom and
offered it back.
Jiang Si shook her head again: “Xianggu might not
understand me. I never take back what I’ve given away.”
Liu Xianggu’s hand holding the banknote tightened.
“Of course, this money is what I’ve saved bit by bit from
my monthly allowance. If I give it away and don’t hear
anything in return, I’d feel quite upset,” the young lady
sighed.
Jiang Si wasn’t lying. Her mother’s dowry was still in her
grandmother’s possession, and her father’s annual salary
went into the public account. Her savings indeed came
mainly from her monthly allowance.
She had given away these fifty taels decisively, much to
the distress of her two maids.
“What does Miss want to do?” Liu Xianggu suddenly had
an ominous premonition.
“It’s simple. Xianggu doesn’t need to return the money my
second aunt gave you. Just come to the Earl’s mansion to
perform the ritual as planned,” Jiang Si said, then her
expression turned serious, “However, the blame that was
meant for my second brother, I want someone else to bear
it!”
“That’s impossible!” Liu Xianggu flatly refused, “That would
ruin my reputation!”
Jiang Si didn’t even raise her eyelids, calmly reminding
her: “Grave robbing, spreading gossip!”
Liu Xianggu’s lips trembled.
This was a threat, an outright threat!
Jiang Si gave Liu Xianggu a cool glance, then refilled her
teacup with hot tea and took a small sip.
The tea’s fragrance was refreshing.
She enjoyed threatening others and seeing them helpless.
“Why is Xianggu so conflicted? Does Xianggu think that in
my second aunt’s eyes, you’re just a charlatan?”
Whether it was reverse psychology or not, Jiang Si’s
words still riled Liu Xianggu: “Of course not! I’ve been in
this business for years, relying on real skills!”
Jiang Si smiled slightly.
She believed these words.
Someone who could fool many noble ladies must have
some real ability.
“That’s it then. Since Xianggu is seen as a highly-skilled
spiritual person in my second aunt’s eyes, if the results of
your ritual are a bit off, she can’t eat you alive, can she?”
Faced with the young lady’s meaningful smile, Liu Xianggu
felt a headache coming on.
How did she end up tangled with this troublemaker?
“In any case, I believe Xianggu can come out of this
unscathed. Xianggu should believe in herself too,” Jiang Si
said earnestly.
Liu Xianggu opened and closed her mouth.
What else could she say? She could only believe in
herself!
Jiang Si pushed a teacup towards her and raised her own:
“Then let’s use tea instead of wine to celebrate our
cooperation.”
Liu Xianggu remained silent for a moment, then picked up
the teacup in front of her and gently clinked it with the
young lady’s cup.
The news of Old Madam Dongping’s eye ailment quickly
spread among acquainted families, thanks to the efforts of
Second Madam Xiao of Earl Dongping’s household.
In just a few days, Madam Xiao had invited renowned
physicians far and wide for Old Madam Feng, even
summoning two or three imperial physicians from the
Imperial Medical Bureau.
Such a commotion naturally caught the attention of
families acquainted with the Earl’s household.
Now, when people mentioned Earl Dongping’s household,
they would praise the filial piety of Old Madam Dongping’s
second daughter-in-law.
Early that morning, Jiang Si dressed neatly to pay her
respects to Old Madam Feng at the Hall of Kindness. Just
as she stepped out of Begonia Residence, she
encountered Jiang Ancheng.
“Father hasn’t gone out today?” Jiang Si curtsied
gracefully.
“I just came from your grandmother’s. I was about to
leave,” Jiang Ancheng said while observing his daughter.
Today, Jiang Si wore a short white jacket with scattered
red flowers and a scarlet silk skirt underneath, looking like
a blooming begonia, bright and captivating.
Jiang Ancheng breathed a slight sigh of relief and praised,
“Seems very spirited today.”
Jiang Si’s mouth twitched slightly.
Did her father know how to speak? What was wrong with
complimenting his daughter for looking beautiful?
Feeling his words were abrupt, Jiang Ancheng paused
and said, “Your grandmother is in a bad mood today.
Wearing something bright looks more festive.”
He had worn a plain-colored belt today and had already
been severely scolded by his mother. He couldn’t let his
daughter be scolded for no reason.
“Thank you for the advice, Father,” Jiang Si smiled
charmingly.
Jiang Ancheng awkwardly rubbed his nose, pretending to
be nonchalant: “Well then, hurry to the Hall of Kindness to
pay your respects. I’m heading out.”
Jiang Si watched the tall, straight figure hurrying away,
feeling a warmth flow through her heart.
Her father, a grown man, had come all this way just to
ensure she wouldn’t dress inappropriately and incur her
grandmother’s wrath…
Jiang Si tilted her head back, just in time to see the
morning sun emerging from behind the clouds, painting
the surrounding sky a vibrant orange-red, matching her
current mood perfectly.
“What is Fourth Sister looking at?” A voice with an
indescribable tone came from nearby.
Jiang Si turned towards the sound.
Two young ladies were walking one after another on the
stone path. The one in front was Sixth Miss Jiang Pei,
followed by Fifth Miss Jiang Li.
Although both Jiang Pei and Jiang Li were born to
concubines, Jiang Pei’s birth mother was Second Madam
Xiao’s dowry maid, while Jiang Li’s birth mother was a
chambermaid who had served Second Master Jiang in his
youth. Thus, Jiang Pei had more face in front of the
principal wife than Jiang Li.
The one who had just spoken was Sixth Miss Jiang Pei.
In the blink of an eye, Jiang Pei and Jiang Li arrived in
front of Jiang Si.
Jiang Pei looked Jiang Si up and down and smiled,
“Fourth Sister is dressed so brightly today.”
“Young and beautiful, of course, one should dress
brightly,” Jiang Si replied coolly.
After the title had fallen to the second branch, Jiang Pei,
who was adept at pleasing Madam Xiao, had secured a
good marriage. Their comfortable life was gained at the
expense of the main branch. Naturally, Jiang Si wasn’t in a
good mood seeing these people.
Hearing this, Jiang Pei’s face instantly flushed with anger.
She was two years younger than Jiang Si. Thinking that it
wouldn’t be appropriate to dress too flashily when
grandmother’s eyes were bad, she had specially changed
into a plain-colored dress to pay her respects. Wasn’t
Jiang Si’s comment mocking her for being ugly?
“Grandmother is ill, yet Fourth Sister still has the heart to
dress up. I wonder where Fourth Sister’s filial piety lies?”
“Where my filial piety lies is not for Sixth Sister to worry
about. Rather, Sixth Sister speaking to her elder sister in
such a manner, where are your manners?”
“You—” Jiang Pei was so choked up she couldn’t speak,
almost dropping the box in her hands.
Jiang Si turned and left.
Jiang Pei spat in a low voice: “Now you know about
manners, how come you quarreled with Mother the other
day?”
Jiang Li tugged at Jiang Pei’s sleeve: “Sixth Sister, you
should say less.”
“No need for your nagging!” Jiang Pei glared at Jiang Li,
then hurried towards the Hall of Kindness.
The Hall of Kindness was filled with a strong medicinal
smell. Afu announced, “Old Madam, Fourth Miss, Fifth
Miss, and Sixth Miss have come.”
“Let them in.”
The three sisters entered in a line.
Old Madam Feng’s left eye could no longer see, and her
remaining eye struggled to open. She immediately noticed
Jiang Pei in her plain-colored clothes.
“Get out!” Old Madam Feng’s seeing eye seemed to be
stabbed by a needle as she shouted fiercely.
Jiang Pei shot a smug glance at Jiang Si.
She knew Jiang Si would be in trouble for dressing up like
a butterfly!

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 42: Enter the Stage
The sudden loss of sight in her eye made Old Madam
Feng more irritable with each passing day. Especially after
the imperial physician’s treatment proved ineffective, Old
Madam Feng’s reason began to lose control over her
temper.
For someone with such a strong desire for control to
suddenly lose sight in one eye, the fear of falling into
complete darkness in the future was indescribable. She
had to do something to prove her unwavering authority.
Faced with Old Madam Feng’s sudden outburst, Jiang Si
remained calm and composed.
With her father’s warning today and countless verifications
from her previous life, she was confident in her
understanding of her grandmother’s mind, at least more so
than others around her, especially her Sixth Sister, Jiang
Pei.
Jiang Si’s meaningful gaze made Jiang Pei very
uncomfortable. She lowered her voice and put on a
sympathetic face: “Fourth Sister, Grandmother isn’t feeling
well. You should listen to her and leave quickly.”
Jiang Si curved her lips in a half-smile and gracefully
curtsied to Old Madam Feng: “Granddaughter pays her
respects to Grandmother. Granddaughter will take her
leave.”
As she spoke, she retreated towards the door without a
sideways glance. Jiang Pei’s lips had already begun to
curl up.
“Sixth girl, are you deaf?” Old Madam Feng’s impatient
voice rang out.
“Pff-” Third Miss Jiang Qiao, who had arrived a step earlier
with Third Madam Guo to pay respects, was standing
behind Madam Guo. Hearing this, she couldn’t help but
laugh.
Old Madam Feng’s cold gaze swept over, and Jiang Qiao
immediately lowered her eyes, not daring to make another
sound.
Jiang Pei was completely stunned.
What was Grandmother saying? Had she misheard?
Seeing Jiang Pei’s lack of reaction, Jiang Li kindly pulled
her: “Sixth Sister, Grandmother is talking to you.”
Jiang Pei blinked, the color draining from her face, then
suddenly flushing red as if oil had been poured on nearly
extinguished embers.
For Jiang Pei, who was used to flattering her elders, being
publicly rebuked by Old Madam Feng today left her
mortified.
What was even more frustrating was that she didn’t even
know the reason!
“Granddaughter takes her leave.” Jiang Pei hastily
curtsied to Old Madam Feng and ran out, covering her
face.
Jiang Si felt a whirlwind pass by her side, and Jiang Pei’s
figure quickly disappeared.
She just smiled and walked out calmly.
Several people were approaching from the front, led by
Second Madam Xiao and Jiang Qian. Madam Xiao was
talking to someone beside her as they walked.
Jiang Si’s eyes twinkled with amusement.
The person Madam Xiao and her daughter had personally
brought was none other than Fairy Liu.
Of course, Jiang Si wanted to laugh.
What could be more interesting than this play? She
believed that when the curtain fell, her Second Aunt and
Second Cousin would never forget it.
“Fourth Sister, you’ve come to pay respects to
Grandmother?” As they drew closer, Jiang Qian spoke
first.
Madam Xiao cast a surprised glance at Jiang Qian.
Jiang Qian knew about this dead girl’s disrespect, and she
had suffered quite a bit from this girl’s attitude. Why was
Qian being so polite to her now?
Jiang Qian seemed not to notice Madam Xiao’s look,
maintaining a gentle smile.
Jiang Si curtsied slightly in greeting, giving Jiang Qian a
meaningful look: “Second Sister has been coming back so
frequently lately. Didn’t Grandmother say you should stay
at the Marquis’s manor to serve your in-laws?”
Jiang Qian unconsciously bit her lip, her hands clenched
inside her sleeves.
How could she not hear the sarcasm in Jiang Si’s words?
She still didn’t know what had provoked Jiang Si, who now
took every opportunity to needle her. If it weren’t for the
fact that she couldn’t openly confront her yet, with her
status as the wife of the Marquis of Changxing’s heir, why
would she need to smile at a cousin whose engagement
had been broken off?
“Grandmother said that out of concern for me, but as
granddaughters, we can’t just think of ourselves. I’ve been
worried sick about Grandmother’s persistent eye
condition. When I heard Mother had personally invited
Fairy Liu, I couldn’t help but come over,” Jiang Qian
explained in a gentle tone.
How could she miss such a good show? She wanted to
personally witness the misfortune of the First Branch to
vent the frustration Jiang Si had caused her.
On one side was the gentle and modest Jiang Qian, on
the other the sharp-edged Jiang Si. The maids and
servants following behind Madam Xiao couldn’t help but
feel indignant on Jiang Qian’s behalf.
However, no one dared to show such thoughts at the
moment. The consequences of angering Fourth Miss were
still fresh in their memories.
“Second Aunt, is this Fairy Liu?” Jiang Si looked at Fairy
Liu, her eyes filled with curiosity.
Fairy Liu’s lips twitched slightly.
This little girl is a demon!
“Mm.” Madam Xiao responded indifferently, then turned to
Fairy Liu politely, “Fairy Liu, please enter. Our Old Madam
has been waiting for a long time.”
Fairy Liu nodded slightly and walked in with composed
steps, her demeanor somewhat reminiscent of an
immortal.
Jiang Si turned back and paused for a moment, just in
time to see Third Madam Guo walking out with Jiang Qiao,
followed by Jiang Qian and Jiang Li.
Old Madam Feng had dismissed everyone, keeping only
Madam Xiao and Fairy Liu to discuss matters.
The courtyard of Cixin Hall was very spacious. Everyone
tacitly gathered in the yard, even Sixth Miss Jiang Pei,
who had just run away embarrassed, quietly returned.
Everyone was curious to see if the fairy invited by Second
Madam could cure Old Madam’s eye condition.
Jiang Si naturally stayed as well.
After about half an hour, Afu came out of Cixin Hall and
instructed a small maid to go to the front courtyard to relay
a message. Jiang Qian took the opportunity to inquire
about the situation.
Afu said, “Old Madam has ordered all three masters and
young masters to be called back. The fairy needs all the
family’s main members present to perform the ritual.”
Hearing this, Jiang Qian couldn’t help but glance at Jiang
Si, a gleam of satisfaction in her eyes.
This was perfect. Burning Jiang Zhan in front of everyone
would ensure that the First Branch wouldn’t be able to
hold their heads up for a long time, and Grandmother’s
grudge against her would be resolved.
As for Jiang Zhan, although he was the eldest grandson of
the main branch, he was already incompetent. If he
completely lost Grandmother’s favor, how could he
compare to her elder brother’s promising future?
At this time, Second Master Jiang was in the yamen, while
Jiang Ancheng and Third Master Jiang had gone out
together to manage the family’s external businesses.
Jiang Zhan and the other grandchildren were studying in
different schools. Everyone gradually returned to the
manor upon receiving the message.
By the time Jiang Ancheng and Third Master Jiang arrived
at Cixin Hall together, an incense table had already been
set up in the courtyard, with an incense burner and clear
tea placed on it.
“What’s all this?” Jiang Ancheng’s head began to ache at
the sight.
“A ritual,” Old Madam Feng glanced at her eldest son.
“Fairy Liu said that the sudden loss of sight in my left eye
wasn’t due to illness, but because I was struck by an evil
spirit. Only by dispelling the evil spirit can my eye recover.”
“Mother, how can you believe this—”
Old Madam Feng’s face darkened slightly: “Then can you
find a doctor to cure my eye?”
She had been half-skeptical about the fairy her second
daughter-in-law had invited, but this fairy’s words matched
her dream exactly. She couldn’t help but believe it.
In her heart, Old Madam Feng was willing to believe,
because this way, there was hope for her eye to recover.
Jiang Ancheng was at a loss for words, and after a while,
he managed to say, “As long as Mother is happy.”
Let this witch perform her ritual quickly, so this farce can
end sooner.
At this moment, Fairy Liu spoke up: “Old Madam, are all
the family members present?”
Old Madam Feng looked towards Afu.
Afu immediately said, “The Second Young Master hasn’t
arrived yet.”
“Where is he?”
“Second Brother skipped class again. The messenger
couldn’t find him,” Third Young Master Jiang Yuan
interjected.
Fairy Liu looked solemn: “If we miss today’s auspicious
time, the next ritual will have to wait for seven days.”
“That unfilial child!”
Old Madam Feng cursed angrily, just as the “unfilial child”
ran in.
“Huh? It’s not the day to make offerings to the ancestors,
is it? And this isn’t the right place either,” Jiang Zhan said
puzzledly, looking at the incense table set up in the
courtyard.
Everyone: “…”

Sound of the Bell
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 43: The Sound of the Bell
Madam Feng was fuming at Jiang Zhan’s words, but with
Liu Xianggu present, she forcefully suppressed her anger,
shooting a fierce glare at Jiang Ancheng.
Jiang Ancheng rubbed his nose. It wasn’t his fault; he
didn’t know this unfortunate child.
“Xianggu, please begin,” Madam Feng said in a deep
voice.
Liu Xianggu nodded, glanced at the water clock, and
began to walk around the incense altar with her eyes
closed.
Everyone held their breath, hearing only the muffled words
from Liu Xianggu’s mouth and the sound of wind rustling
through the leaves of the Chinese toon tree in the corner.
Liu Xianggu circled the incense altar again and again.
She wore a loose robe today, and as she moved, the hem
fluttered. Her seemingly chaotic steps subtly revealed a
certain rhythm, inspiring a sense of solemnity in those who
watched.
Jiang Zhan quietly pulled at Jiang Si: “This fortune-teller’s
spinning is making me dizzy. Fourth Sister, are you
alright?”
As the younger generation stood together, everyone
turned to look as soon as Jiang Zhan finished speaking.
“I’m fine,” Jiang Si said, tugging at the corners of her
mouth, suddenly feeling the urge to give her brother a
good thrashing.
Suddenly, a sharp shout rang out, followed by a crisp bell
sound, which finally drew everyone’s attention.
Jiang Si took the opportunity to step on Jiang Zhan’s foot,
chiding, “Second Brother, can’t you stay quiet?”
“So we’re not allowed to talk now?” Jiang Zhan grumbled.
“Because quiet pretty boys are more likable.”
“Ahem,” Jiang Zhan coughed into his fist, his tone
deepening, “Fourth Sister doesn’t know, but I’m a man of
few words.”
“Ah!” A sudden exclamation rang out.
Jiang Si stopped responding to Jiang Zhan and looked
toward Liu Xianggu, who was performing the ritual.
Incense had been inserted into the altar at some point,
and accompanying the alternating fast and slow bell
sounds, the rising white smoke from the burning incense
suddenly turned black.
How could good white smoke change color?
Liu Xianggu shook the bell in her hand more urgently. The
rapid bell sounds combined with the black incense smoke
made everyone subconsciously tense up.
At that moment, the bell sound suddenly stopped.
Everyone’s hearts seemed to skip a beat.
“Look!” Jiang Qiao pointed forward, losing her voice.
The black smoke above the incense burner on the long
altar seemed to have come to life, condensing into a
stream that slanted towards a certain direction.
That direction was exactly where Jiang Si and the others
stood.
A shadow suddenly fell over the hearts of the younger
generation standing there.
No one was a fool. The black smoke pointing in their
direction surely wasn’t a good omen.
Jiang Si nodded inwardly.
She had to admit, Liu Xianggu did have some skills.
Liu Xianggu, holding the bell, looked towards Madam
Feng.
Madam Feng understood and said in a deep voice, “There
are no outsiders here now. Xianggu, please speak freely.”
Liu Xianggu’s lips trembled slightly: “Madam, that harmful
evil spirit is attached to one of these people!”
Except for Jiang Si, whose face remained expressionless,
everyone else looked stunned. Jiang Zhan even couldn’t
help but shout, “Stop talking nonsense!”
Among the grandchildren, Jiang Zhan had the most
straightforward personality, which was why he had never
been favored by Madam Feng.
“Silence!” Madam Feng wished she could throw Jiang
Zhan out.
“Fine, I’ll be quiet. This is ridiculous,” Jiang Zhan grumbled
softly after feeling Jiang Si gently tug at him.
Madam Feng’s deep gaze swept over Jiang Si and the
others, lingering a moment longer on Jiang Qian.
At such a sensitive time, Jiang Qian felt her face heat up,
even feeling that everyone’s gaze towards her had
changed.
Don’t panic!
Jiang Qian took a deep breath inwardly.
Given that dream, it was normal for Grandmother to
suspect her.
Jiang Qian turned her head slightly to look at Madam Xiao,
who nodded lightly at her.
Jiang Qian relaxed, her expression composed.
Liu Xianggu was invited by her mother, and everything
had been arranged by her mother. Once Liu Xianggu
pointed out Jiang Zhan, it would no longer be her concern.
Jiang Qian’s eyes turned to Jiang Zhan, and his disdainful
expression made her laugh inwardly.
She could hardly wait to see Jiang Zhan’s expression
when he found out he was the culprit.
It would surely be spectacular.
“Can Xianggu point out who the evil spirit is attached to?”
Madam Feng asked, enunciating each word.
No matter who this person was, even if it was her usually
beloved granddaughter Jiang Qian, she wouldn’t tolerate
it!
Liu Xianggu slowly walked in front of Jiang Si and the
others, her gaze sweeping across everyone’s faces.
Those she looked at couldn’t help but feel nervous,
especially the usually timid Fifth Miss Jiang Li, who even
began to tremble, her frail body like a withered leaf
hanging from a branch in the autumn wind.
“To confirm which person the evil spirit is attached to, I
need to ask the young masters and misses to stand out
individually, allowing me to verify with my spell one by
one,” Liu Xianggu said with the air of an otherworldly
expert.
“Xianggu, please proceed with your spell. We must find
and remove this evil spirit at all costs!” Madam Feng’s
tone brooked no argument.
“Then I beg your pardon,” Liu Xianggu bowed to Jiang Si
and the others.
Her bow happened to be directed at Jiang Si, but
naturally, no one noticed at this moment.
Jiang Si watched Liu Xianggu with some curiosity.
That day, she had only reached an agreement with Liu
Xianggu. What she wanted was the result of Jiang Qian’s
misfortune, but as for the process, she didn’t understand
these tricks and illusions, so she didn’t interfere, leaving it
to the professional fortune-teller.
Now, how would Liu Xianggu manage to point out Jiang
Qian?
As Jiang Si was pondering this, Liu Xianggu raised the bell
in her hand.
The bell was made of copper, its patina showing its age,
with ancient patterns on its body exuding a mysterious and
profound aura.
Liu Xianggu shook the bell in her hand, and a clear, crisp
sound immediately rang out.
In the spacious courtyard, apart from the sound of wind
rustling leaves, only the sound of this bell remained.
Liu Xianggu lowered her hand and looked at the bell with
affection: “I don’t know if Madam has heard, but there is a
kind of bell that rings for the living, but when it encounters
spirits, evil entities, or other yin objects, it makes no
sound.”
Madam Feng nodded slowly: “There is such a saying in
old tales.”
Liu Xianggu smiled: “This bell of mine is exactly that kind,
called the Soul-Fixing Bell.”
As soon as the words “Soul-Fixing Bell” were uttered, a
gust of wind blew past, causing goosebumps to rise on
everyone’s exposed skin.
“Well then, I shall begin,” Liu Xianggu pointed at Fifth Miss
Jiang Li, who was standing at the outermost edge. “Let’s
start with this young lady.”
Jiang Li’s face immediately turned pale. Under everyone’s
gaze, she dared not say a word and shuffled step by step
to stand before Liu Xianggu.
Liu Xianggu raised her hand, gently shaking the bell in
front of Jiang Li’s brow. The clear sound of the bell
immediately rang out.
Jiang Li let out a heavy sigh of relief, retreating two steps
as if drained.
Liu Xianggu walked past Jiang Li, moving on to the next
person.
The bell sound rang out from time to time, and soon it was
Jiang Zhan’s turn.
Jiang Zhan said impatiently, “Please hurry up.”
The bell began to shake.
Ding-a-ling—
Liu Xianggu’s face remained calm as she walked past
Jiang Zhan.
Jiang Qian couldn’t hide her astonishment and looked
towards Madam Xiao.
Madam Xiao wore the same expression.
Mother and daughter exchanged glances, but before they
could think further, Liu Xianggu had already arrived in front
of Jiang Qian and raised the bell, giving it a gentle shake.
In that instant, heaven and earth fell silent, and the bell
made no sound.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 44: A Bitter Pill to Swallow
The courtyard was so quiet one could hear a pin drop. All
eyes were fixed on Jiang Qian.
Old Madam Feng felt a sense of relief wash over her. So it
was true – the brocaded pheasant in her dream had
indeed referred to her second granddaughter!
A gentle breeze lifted the stray hairs on Jiang Qian’s
forehead, revealing her pale face.
“How could this be…” Jiang Qian mumbled, looking
blankly at Madam Xiao.
At that moment, her mind was blank, her senses numb.
Only one thought echoed: Hadn’t Mother bribed the
Immortal Lady Liu? Why had she become the one
possessed by the evil spirit?
“Has the Immortal Lady made a mistake?” Madam Xiao
stepped forward, her face ashen, emphasizing the words
“made a mistake.”
Immortal Lady Liu replied calmly, “Madam jests. People
can make mistakes, but the Soul-Fixing Bell cannot be
wrong.”
“But this shouldn’t—” Madam Xiao’s gaze fell on the bell in
Immortal Lady Liu’s hand, her brow furrowed as she spoke
meaningfully, “Is this bell perhaps broken?”
Immortal Lady Liu smiled and casually took a few steps
forward, raising the bell and shaking it in front of Sixth
Miss Jiang Pei.
The clear chime rang out once more.
She stepped back and shook the bell at Jiang Qian again.
The bell, as if suddenly mute, made no sound at all.
The scene fell silent once more, filled with an
indescribable awkwardness and reverence for the
unknown.
“It can’t possibly be Qian’er, Immortal Lady—” Madam
Xiao clenched her fists tightly, blue veins protruding on the
back of her hands. She bit out the words “Immortal Lady”
with particular emphasis.
Immortal Lady Liu bowed to Madam Xiao, “Madam,
Heaven’s will cannot be defied. This is not something I can
decide.”
She was speaking the truth. If she could decide, why
would she have caused so much trouble?
“Now that the Immortal Lady has found the evil spirit,
please proceed with the exorcism,” Old Madam Feng
urged.
“Old Madam—”
“Enough!” Old Madam Feng cut off Madam Xiao’s words
coldly, “You invited the Immortal Lady here. Are you
saying you don’t accept this result?”
Madam Xiao’s lips trembled, unable to utter a word.
It was only then that she realized with terror that this time,
she had truly lifted a stone only to drop it on her own feet.
She had invited Immortal Lady Liu, and now it was
discovered that her daughter was harming the Old
Madam. She could hardly say that she had privately paid
Immortal Lady Liu, could she?
For the first time, Madam Xiao experienced the taste of a
bitter pill she couldn’t spit out. With an expressionless
face, she looked at Immortal Lady Liu, “Then please,
Immortal Lady, proceed with the exorcism quickly, so that
Old Madam can recover as soon as possible.”
Immortal Lady Liu did possess some mystical powers, but
Madam Xiao didn’t believe that the Old Madam’s eyes
could truly recover just from a ritual. When that time came,
she would tell the Old Madam that Immortal Lady Liu had
no real skills and they should invite someone else.
Of course, if Immortal Lady Liu had pointed to Jiang Zhan
as agreed earlier, and the Old Madam’s eyes hadn’t
improved after the ritual, it would have been a different
story.
“Then I shall begin,” Immortal Lady Liu tucked the bell into
her robes and began making hand gestures, circling Jiang
Qian.
The others instinctively moved aside.
Jiang Qian stood there alone, listening to Immortal Lady
Liu’s incantations. Her pretty face turned from white to red,
then from red to white, like a changing palette.
“Begone!” After circling for who knows how long, Immortal
Lady Liu suddenly raised her hand, flames erupting from
it.
Gasps of surprise rose from all around.
The flame-engulfed hand landed on Jiang Qian’s shoulder.
“Ah—” Jiang Qian screamed involuntarily.
Surprisingly, the flames extinguished without setting Jiang
Qian’s clothes on fire.
“What’s that?” Old Madam Feng’s eyes narrowed.
A patch of red gradually appeared on Jiang Qian’s
shoulder, growing more and more vivid, reminiscent of
fresh blood.
After a moment, the red patch gradually faded and finally
disappeared without a trace, as if it had never been there.
“It’s done. The evil spirit has been exorcised. Old Madam’s
eye affliction will improve within three days,” Immortal
Lady Liu said to Old Madam Feng, slightly out of breath
but smiling.
“Really?” Old Madam Feng asked eagerly.
Immortal Lady Liu nodded with a profound smile, her eyes
briefly glancing at Jiang Si among the crowd.
How could she know if it would get better? It was that
young miss who had said so.
That day at the Tianxiang Teahouse, the young miss had
told her that if she followed her instructions, Dong Ping
Earl’s Old Madam’s eye affliction would improve within
three days, promising her both fame and fortune.
Faced with both threat and temptation, she had no choice
but to agree.
“Thank you for your efforts, Immortal Lady,” Old Madam
Feng showed a genuine smile and gave a signal to A Fu.
A Fu immediately presented a bulging purse.
“I’m tired now. Madam Xiao, please take good care of the
Immortal Lady for the next two days. Don’t be
discourteous,” Old Madam Feng instructed.
Since Immortal Lady Liu dared to publicly state that her
eye affliction would improve within three days, she already
half believed it. But since it concerned her personally, it
would be most appropriate to have Immortal Lady Liu stay
at the manor for three days.
Stay for longer?
Immortal Lady Liu was dumbfounded upon hearing this. If
it weren’t for years of cultivating a thick skin, she would
have revealed her true colors on the spot.
She glanced almost imperceptibly at Jiang Si.
The young lady standing between her sisters, as stunning
as a blooming crabapple flower, expressionlessly made a
hand gesture for “six.”
Curse her ancestors and spread gossip!
Immortal Lady Liu: “…”
“Then I’ll impose on your hospitality,” Immortal Lady Liu
bowed to Madam Xiao.
“You’re too kind, Immortal Lady. Please forgive any
inadequacies in our hospitality,” Madam Xiao said, almost
grinding her teeth, her eyes cold as she looked at
Immortal Lady Liu.
Old Madam Feng said displeased, “Then take good care
of her.”
Madam Xiao was immediately embarrassed.
Beside her, Third Madam Guo nearly burst out laughing.
It had been a long time since she had seen her second
sister-in-law so flustered. The last time was because of
Fourth Miss. Could this become a regular occurrence?
Hmm, just thinking about it made her feel satisfied.
“Daughter-in-law understands.”
Old Madam Feng nodded, then turned to look at Jiang
Qian.
Jiang Qian, still not recovered from the shock, stammered,
“Grandmother—”
Old Madam Feng’s disgust was unconcealed as she said
coldly, “Second girl, I’ve told you before, you’re already a
married woman. Don’t come back to your maiden home
without reason, lest the Marquis’s household say you’re
neglecting your duties as a daughter-in-law.”
Jiang Qian’s body swayed slightly as she bit her lip and
said, “Granddaughter understands.”
What had gone wrong between Mother and Immortal Lady
Liu? This humiliation would be unforgettable for a lifetime.
“Feng Ma, help me inside. Have someone clean up here
properly,” Old Madam Feng said.
After Old Madam Feng went inside, the crowd standing in
the courtyard quietly dispersed, not without casting a few
more glances at Jiang Qian.
From now on, Jiang Qian had fallen out of favor with the
Old Madam.
Jiang Zhan accompanied Jiang Si as they walked out,
faintly hearing a voice from behind: “Second Sister, are
you alright?”
It was the eldest son, Jiang Cang, Jiang Qian’s twin
brother.
Jiang Qian said something softly, but the rest was
inaudible.
“Hindsight is always perfect,” Jiang Zhan said, noticing
Jiang Si looking at him.
He pursed his lips, “If that charlatan had dared to say it
was you, I would have beaten her on the spot until even
her mother wouldn’t recognize her. Let’s see if she could
still pretend to be mystical and fool people then!”
Jiang Si smiled gently, “I know Second Brother is the most
capable.”
Jiang Zhan never expected Jiang Si to praise him so
directly. His ears reddened instantly, and he hastily
changed the subject, “Fourth Sister doesn’t believe that
charlatan’s nonsense either, right?”
The young girl replied with an innocent face, “I do believe
it.”
“What?” Jiang Zhan’s foot slipped, and he nearly fell.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 45: Aftermath
Facing the strange looks from everyone in the manor,
Jiang Qian, despite her many questions and grievances,
couldn’t bring herself to stay at the Earl’s manor. She
exchanged a glance with Madam Xiao before hurriedly
leaving.
Madam Xiao was responsible for entertaining Liu Xianggu
and soon had an opportunity to be alone with her.
At this point, she could no longer contain herself and
immediately questioned, “Xianggu, what exactly is going
on?”
Liu Xianggu remained as steady as Mount Tai: “This result
was unexpected even to me.”
“What do you mean by that? This is not what we had
agreed upon earlier!” Seeing Liu Xianggu still beating
around the bush, Madam Xiao’s anger grew. “Could it be
that Xianggu finds the payment insufficient?”
“Madam misunderstands,” Liu Xianggu sighed deeply. “It’s
truly that heaven’s will is difficult to defy.”
“What heaven’s will?”
Liu Xianggu put on a profound expression: “Originally, I
was mindful of Madam’s sincerity and wanted to help
Madam accomplish this task. But as you know, my
livelihood depends on communicating with spirits. Today,
heaven’s will was such, and I had no choice but to
comply.”
“What spirits and ghosts? Wasn’t the story about an evil
spirit troubling the Old Madam something we agreed upon
beforehand?” Madam Xiao’s face turned ashen as she
pressed.
Liu Xianggu suddenly reached out and grasped Madam
Xiao’s hand, her expression utterly serious: “There is an
evil spirit attached to the Young Madam!”
Madam Xiao shuddered in fright, violently shaking off Liu
Xianggu’s hand, her face turning from ashen to pale:
“Xianggu, what nonsense are you talking about!”
Liu Xianggu sneered: “Could it be that Madam thinks I’m
just a charlatan?”
When Liu Xianggu’s face was devoid of any trace of a
smile, that sense of otherworldly elegance completely
disappeared.
Her cheekbones were somewhat high, her chin sharp and
thin, and coupled with her cold, deep gaze, she suddenly
looked somewhat eerie.
Madam Xiao’s heart skipped a beat.
How could she forget that the reason her sister-in-law from
her maiden family was familiar with Liu Xianggu was
because Liu Xianggu had once helped retrieve the soul of
her nephew years ago?
This Liu Xianggu indeed possessed real abilities!
But originally, the talk of an evil spirit troubling the Old
Madam was just a pretext she had used to divert attention.
How did it end up with a real evil spirit attaching itself to
Qian’er?
The more Madam Xiao thought about it, the more terrified
she became, and she couldn’t help but look at Liu
Xianggu.
Liu Xianggu sighed deeply: “That’s why I say everything is
predestined. How could I dare to go against heaven’s will
for the sake of some worldly goods?”
“Will the Old Madam’s eye condition improve within three
days?”
Liu Xianggu hesitated for a moment.
Madam Xiao keenly noticed this and sneered, “Then I’ll
wait to see Xianggu’s miracle in three days!”
With that, she angrily swept her sleeves and left.
Liu Xianggu collapsed onto a cushioned chair, poured
herself a cup of tea, and gulped it down, feeling a wave of
fear.
She was going to be the death of her, that girl!
“Xianggu, shall we pack up our things?” A young girl stood
at the door holding a small bundle.
“Pack what? Just leave it there,” Liu Xianggu waved
dismissively.
She had to be prepared to be thrown out at any moment,
so what was the point of packing?
These three days were going to feel like years.
Madam Xiao was naturally half-believing and half-doubting
Liu Xianggu’s words. She decided to write two letters, one
sent to Jiang Qian to comfort her, and the other sent to her
sister-in-law from her maiden family.
Madam Xiao’s elder sister-in-law soon came to visit under
the pretext of checking on Old Madam Feng, giving the
two women an opportunity to talk privately.
“Elder Sister, tell me honestly, how capable is Liu
Xianggu?”
Madam Xiao’s elder sister-in-law already knew about what
had happened at the Earl’s manor and now felt somewhat
embarrassed facing Madam Xiao: “She’s quite effective at
retrieving souls for scared children.”
“Can her rituals and exorcisms cure the Old Madam’s eye
condition?”
The elder sister-in-law laughed dryly: “That’s hard to say.
The Old Madam’s eye condition did come on suddenly,
and it’s difficult to determine the exact cause.”
Madam Xiao closed her eyes briefly, feeling more and
more resentful: “I can’t help but feel that Liu Xianggu has
played us!”
But there were still things she couldn’t understand.
She had promised Liu Xianggu a generous sum of money
if the task was successful, so why would Liu Xianggu turn
away from money?
Madam Xiao opened her eyes, a glint of shrewdness
flashing in them.
It was Liu Xianggu who dealt with spirits, not her.
Whether it was heaven’s will or human manipulation, she
had invited this person only to be bitten back. This account
would need to be settled once this storm had passed.
“There’s still a chance to win back the Old Madam’s favor
for Qian’er.”
Madam Xiao looked at her elder sister-in-law.
The elder sister-in-law instinctively glanced at the door
and lowered her voice: “What if the Old Madam’s eyes
don’t improve within three days?”
“You mean—”
“If the Old Madam’s eyes don’t get better, then Liu
Xianggu is just a charlatan, and naturally, the claim that
Qian’er is possessed by an evil spirit won’t hold water.”
Madam Xiao fell silent for a moment.
Although she was currently managing the Earl’s
household, the Old Madam’s personal needs were
arranged separately, and it was difficult for her to interfere.
The incident a few days ago when she tried to gather
information from Ci Xin Hall and had tea leaves thrown in
her face by Old Madam Feng was still fresh in her
memory.
“Madam, the Master has arrived,” came the report from a
maid outside the door.
Soon the door opened, and the Second Master Jiang
entered with a grim face.
“Elder Sister is here,” he acknowledged Madam Xiao’s
elder sister-in-law perfunctorily upon seeing her.
The elder sister-in-law hurriedly stood up: “There are
many matters to attend to at home, so I’ll take my leave
now.”
Despite the elder sister-in-law’s tact, the Second Master
Jiang still showed little enthusiasm. Once she left, his face
became even colder: “Look at what you’ve done! When
has a family of our standing ever needed to invite fortune-
tellers to put on a show? Now, such a pot of dirty water
has been splashed on Qian’er that can’t be washed clean.
How is Qian’er supposed to face her in-laws if this gets
out?”
“I… I didn’t expect it to turn out like this—”
Ignoring Madam Xiao’s embarrassment, the Second
Master Jiang said coldly: “That Liu Xianggu was
recommended by your elder sister-in-law, wasn’t she? In
the future, have less contact with her!”
Madam Xiao’s face suddenly flushed red.
She came from an ordinary background, and all her
current status came from her husband and children. Now,
with the Second Master Jiang speaking like this, it was like
a slap across her face.
“The servants in our household need to be warned
properly, absolutely no word of this matter can spread
outside. As for Qian’er’s side, you need to write to her
immediately, instructing her not to show any abnormality in
the Marquis’s household. Mother is someone who
considers the bigger picture. No matter what she thinks of
Qian’er after this incident, she will take into account
Qian’er’s position in the Marquis’s household.”
Madam Xiao nodded repeatedly.
Lifting a stone only to drop it on one’s own feet was painful
and infuriating, but the urgent matter at hand was to
minimize the impact of this incident. It absolutely must not
affect Qian’er’s status in the Marquis’s household.
The next day, when Madam Xiao and others went to Ci
Xin Hall to pay their respects, they didn’t see Old Madam
Feng.
Madam Xiao went to the management hall to handle
household affairs when an old woman hurriedly entered:
“Second Madam, something terrible has happened!”
“What is it?” This was now what Madam Xiao feared
hearing the most, her heart immediately jumping to her
throat.
“The news about Xianggu’s ritual yesterday has spread,
and now there are even gambling houses setting up bets
on whether the Old Madam’s eyes will recover within three
days!”
“What?” Madam Xiao’s vision darkened, and she fainted.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 46: A Business Proposition
“What?” Immortal Lady Liu was equally shocked.
At that moment, Immortal Lady Liu sat on the bed, one
hand clutching her chest, her face pale.
Originally, she had thought that if Old Madam Feng’s eyes
didn’t improve within three days, she could make up
another excuse. Now, even the gambling houses in the
capital were setting up bets on this. Under such scrutiny,
not only would it be impossible to overcome this hurdle,
but some of her past deceptions might also be exposed.
People in the Great Zhou dynasty loved to gamble, from
small items like needles and thread to large ones like
carriages and houses. Anything could be used as a stake
for betting.
Immortal Lady Liu could easily imagine the excitement
these two days had stirred up because of her ritual.
This wouldn’t do. She couldn’t stay at the Earl’s manor
anymore; staying would be her downfall.
Immortal Lady Liu had the idea of leaving the capital and
fleeing far away. She instructed her young disciple to
inform Madam Xiao that she needed to go out for a while.
Madam Xiao, still not recovered from the shock, reflexively
refused when she heard the disciple’s request.
When the disciple returned with the report, Immortal Lady
Liu decided to go see Madam Xiao herself.
“Madam just fainted and is still very dizzy. She’s only just
lying down. If Immortal Lady has any matters, perhaps you
could come back later,” Madam Xiao’s head maid
intercepted Immortal Lady Liu.
“Then please let Madam rest well. I’ll go speak with Old
Madam instead,” Immortal Lady Liu said calmly, showing
no irritation despite being refused twice.
“Cough, cough—” A cough came from inside. “Please, ask
Immortal Lady to come in.”
Immortal Lady Liu walked in steadily.
Madam Xiao was being supported by her maid, half-
reclining against an ink-patterned pillow.
“What does Immortal Lady need to tell Old Madam?”
Facing Immortal Lady Liu, Madam Xiao could hardly
maintain a pleasant expression.
If she could, she would have thrown this charlatan into a
fire pit to burn!
Of course, she had just sent someone to contact her elder
sister-in-law at her maiden home. She refused to believe
this charlatan truly had such supernatural abilities, never
having failed in exorcisms before.
“I need to buy some talisman paper. After the ritual, I’ll
burn it into charm water for Old Madam to drink,” Immortal
Lady Liu said calmly.
Since they had already fallen out, she naturally had to
maintain her air of otherworldly expertise.
“If it’s just buying talisman paper, Immortal Lady could
send her disciple.”
“That won’t do. The quality of the paper, and the color of
the cinnabar – they all have subtle differences. Even a
slight deviation would greatly reduce the effectiveness of
the charm water, which would affect Old Madam’s eye
recovery. So I must personally select these items,”
Immortal Lady Liu said seriously, then looked meaningfully
at Madam Xiao. “Madam surely wishes for Old Madam’s
eyes to recover quickly, right?”
“Of course,” Madam Xiao was taken aback. After a
moment’s thought, she nodded to the servant woman
beside her, “In that case, take two people to accompany
Immortal Lady.”
“Yes, Madam.”
Immortal Lady Liu cursed inwardly but smiled outwardly,
“Talisman paper and cinnabar are light items. There’s no
need for so many people.”
Madam Xiao smiled coldly, “Old Madam’s eyesight
depends entirely on Immortal Lady. I must be concerned
for Immortal Lady’s safety.”
Immortal Lady Liu’s smile tightened, and she said no
more.
In her years of experience, she had escaped after failed
exorcisms before and was quite experienced in the art of
slipping away unnoticed.
Immortal Lady Liu left the Earl’s manor with her young
disciple, unconcerned about the two sturdy servant
women following behind. She headed straight for her
usual shop.
The shop was a two-story building facing the street, with a
large character for “Dan” written on a fluttering white flag.
“Oh, it’s Immortal Lady,” the shop assistant greeted
familiarly.
“The usual,” Immortal Lady Liu said expressionlessly.
“Certainly, Immortal Lady, please go upstairs,” the
assistant led Immortal Lady Liu and the others upstairs,
curiously glancing at the two servant women following
closely behind.
Immortal Lady Liu was a regular customer, usually
accompanied by her female disciples. These two servant
women were unfamiliar.
Ah, these two must be from Dong Ping Earl’s manor!
By now, the joke about Dong Ping Earl’s Second Madam
inviting Immortal Lady Liu to perform an exorcism only to
have her daughter exorcised had spread throughout the
city.
“Immortal Lady, will Old Madam Feng’s eyes recover?” the
assistant quickly glanced back and asked in a low voice.
Immortal Lady Liu gave him a sidelong glance and said
proudly, “You doubt this Immortal Lady’s abilities?”
The assistant immediately smiled, “How could I? Your
word is enough. To be honest, I even placed ten copper
coins on your success at the Tianlong gambling house.”
“Ten copper coins?” Immortal Lady Liu frowned.
Was her reputation only worth ten copper coins?
“Hehe, I’ll grit my teeth and bet a tael of silver later. If Old
Madam Feng’s eyes recover, it’ll immediately multiply
fivefold!”
“The odds are—”
“One to five,” the assistant said, then realized his slip and
smiled awkwardly, “Immortal Lady, please go in.”
Immortal Lady Liu entered with a gloomy face.
One to five odds? How insulting!
Fortunately, she was about to leave the capital. Let them
do as they please.
The assistant busily presented various talisman papers
and cinnabar, “Immortal Lady, please take your time
selecting. If you need anything, just have your disciple call
for me.”
As the door closed, the temperature in the room seemed
to rise suddenly.
Immortal Lady Liu didn’t even look at the two servant
women, focusing entirely on selecting talisman paper.
The two servant women, following Madam Xiao’s
instructions, watched Immortal Lady Liu’s every move
intently. Gradually, their eyelids began to feel heavy, and
about a quarter-hour later, they fell asleep.
Immortal Lady Liu put down the items on the table and
stood up, softly instructing her young disciple, “I’ll leave
through the east side of the washroom. You stay here for
a quarter-hour, then go downstairs and meet me at the
usual place. Understand?”
The young disciple nodded repeatedly.
Immortal Lady Liu’s lips curled into a cold smile as she
glanced at the two sleeping servant women, then openly
pushed open the door and left.
The washroom was at the end of the corridor.
Immortal Lady Liu hurried towards it, when suddenly the
door next to it opened, and a handsome youth with a
likable smile appeared, “Where is Immortal Lady going?”
Immortal Lady Liu’s expression changed dramatically
when she saw the youth’s face.
It was that demon’s maid, A Man!
Not only did Immortal Lady Liu not stop, but she
quickened her pace.
A Man took off his shoe and threw it.
The soft-soled shoe hit the back of Immortal Lady Liu’s
head. She staggered, and when she regained her senses,
she found A Man already standing in front of her.
“If Immortal Lady wants to use the washroom, please hold
it for a bit. Our Miss is waiting for you inside,” A Man put
his shoe back on and pointed at the room door.
Resignedly, Immortal Lady Liu walked in and saw the
beautiful young lady sitting by the window, smiling at her
just like when they first met at the Tianxiang Teahouse.
Immortal Lady Liu couldn’t help but shudder.
At their first meeting, she had been tricked onto this
dangerous path by this demon. What did she want this
time?
“Was Immortal Lady planning to leave the capital?” The
young lady’s jet-black eyes sparkled with mirth as if
chatting idly with an old friend.
Immortal Lady Liu, having nothing left to lose, plopped
down opposite Jiang Si, “What else does Miss want?”
“I have a business proposition. I think we could
cooperate,” Jiang Si said.
Immortal Lady Liu instinctively felt this wasn’t good and
warily stared at Jiang Si.
“Immortal Lady needn’t be so nervous. This business is
closely related to you.”
Immortal Lady Liu: “…”
Great, now she was even more nervous. What should she
do?

Borrowing Money
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 47: Borrowing Money
“Xianggu, there’s no need to be nervous. Those two old
women will likely wake up soon, so let’s get to the point
quickly,” Jiang Si said.
“How did you know…” Liu Xianggu’s gaze towards Jiang
Si was now beyond description.
When every step a person takes is foreseen by another,
even if that person is just a frail young girl, she becomes
as terrifying as a monstrous beast in one’s eyes.
At this moment, that was how Liu Xianggu saw Jiang Si.
“Come, let’s talk business,” the young girl said with a
smile.
“I don’t do business!” Liu Xianggu just wanted to flee far
away, without anyone stopping her!
Jiang Si chuckled: “Has Xianggu considered that the
commotion caused by your ritual brings you at least two
benefits?”
“What benefits?”
Jiang Si held up her fingers.
Seeing this gesture, Liu Xianggu’s heart instinctively
trembled.
She wouldn’t show the number “six” again, would she?
Besides digging up ancestral graves and spreading
gossip, couldn’t she threaten with something else?
This time, Jiang Si held up two fingers and said calmly:
“First, Xianggu has become the focus of attention in the
capital, which greatly ensures your safety.”
At this point, Jiang Si glanced at Liu Xianggu and asked
with a smile: “Surely Xianggu doesn’t think my Second
Aunt is made of clay and would let you leave the capital
smoothly?”
Liu Xianggu’s mouth twitched.
That’s why she was planning to sneak away.
“Let me inform Xianggu, my Second Aunt’s elder brother
holds a position in the Five Cities Military Command.
Although his position isn’t prominent, it’s not difficult for
him to deliberately stop someone.”
Liu Xianggu’s lips trembled.
She had truly boarded a pirate ship with no way off!
“Now the situation is different. The whole capital is
watching, so my Second Aunt certainly won’t dare to
openly deal with Xianggu. At most, she might spread
some rumors to damage Xianggu’s reputation.”
“If my reputation is ruined, then everything is over,” Liu
Xianggu said woodenly.
If the Old Madam of Earl Dongping’s eyes didn’t recover,
and the Second Madam branded her a fraud, she might
even end up in jail, which wouldn’t be much better than a
beating.
“Why would Xianggu’s reputation be ruined? My
grandmother’s eyes will certainly recover,” Jiang Si said.
Liu Xianggu took a deep breath, her tone unable to hide
her nervousness and urgency: “Does the young lady truly
believe the Old Madam’s eyes can recover?”
“I never speak empty words. This is the second benefit of
this matter spreading. The more people doubt Xianggu’s
abilities now, the more they will revere you when my
grandmother’s eyes recover. At that time, Xianggu will
gain both fame and fortune.”
“If it truly turns out that way, I must thank the young lady.”
“We won’t discuss that now. What we need to talk about is
business.”
“What business?”
“Aren’t the gambling houses taking bets on this matter?
Let’s join in the fun.”
Liu Xianggu’s face stiffened slightly, unsure of Jiang Si’s
intention.
“I heard that the odds at various gambling houses are
around five to one. If we bet that Xianggu can cure my
grandmother’s eyes, one tael of silver can become five
taels. Isn’t that a highly profitable business?”
“The calculation is correct, but what if we lose?” Liu
Xianggu, swayed by Jiang Si, had already started thinking
like an ordinary person.
“We won’t lose,” Jiang Si said firmly.
Liu Xianggu opened her mouth to object, but facing this
monster who could casually threaten to dig up her
ancestral graves, she had long lost the courage. After
hesitating, she asked, “Why ‘we’?”
Jiang Si spread her hands, saying matter-of-factly: “I don’t
have money.”
Liu Xianggu’s mouth twitched, and she gritted her teeth as
she handed over the silver note hidden in her bosom:
“This is what the young lady gave me earlier. Since you
have no money, please take it back to use. As for
betting… I’d rather not participate.”
If the Old Madam of Earl Dongping’s eyes didn’t recover,
at least she would have some savings to fall back on after
her reputation was ruined.
“In that case, I won’t force Xianggu. Could Xianggu lend
me another two hundred taels of silver?”
“What?” Liu Xianggu was stunned for quite a while.
The young girl’s gaze, deep as a pond, finally made her
give in. She fished out a cloth package from her trouser
pocket, unwrapped it layer by layer, and took out two silver
notes to hand over.
Jiang Si took them without hesitation and smiled slightly.
She knew that people like Liu Xianggu lacked a sense of
security and always carried a sum of money wherever
they went.
“Don’t worry, Xianggu. When I win the bet, I’ll return your
principal.”
Liu Xianggu closed her eyes briefly, still reluctant to say it
wasn’t necessary to return the money. She nodded
haphazardly and said dryly, “I’ll go back now. Those two
old women are about to wake up.”
“Safe journey, Xianggu.”
Shortly after, Aman came in and whispered in Jiang Si’s
ear: “Liu Xianggu has returned.”
Jiang Si nodded slightly: “I know.”
The unique scent of incense associated with Liu Xianggu
hadn’t gone far, indicating she had obediently returned to
the next room.
“Young Miss, Liu Xianggu has done such an
unconscionable thing. Do you intend to let her gain both
fame and fortune?” Aman asked.
Jiang Si smiled and stood up to look out the window:
“What does it matter if she gains fame and fortune? The
wicked will be punished by heaven. Just wait and see.”
Aman scratched her head.
She didn’t believe that heaven was so attentive as to
watch every evil person, but she believed in her young
miss.
“Let’s go to the Tianxiang Tea House.”
The private room at the Tianxiang Tea House had been
booked in advance, and the person Jiang Si was to meet
had already been waiting for a while.
Jiang Si entered with Aman, and the person immediately
stood up.
Jiang Si removed her veil hat and casually placed it on the
table.
The person quickly lowered his head: “What orders does
the young miss have for me?”
He couldn’t forget the first time he saw this heavenly
young miss. Because he forgot to avert his eyes for a
moment, he was beaten by that stinking girl dressed as a
boy beside her until he nearly passed out.
This young man was Afei, the street ruffian who had been
stabbed with a hairpin by Aman.
“You did well with the previous matter,” Jiang Si said
calmly.
If her second uncle’s family wanted to keep the rotten
meat in the pot, she certainly wouldn’t let them have their
way. Afei’s efforts had contributed greatly to the rapid
spread of this gossip.
The people of the capital were quite wealthy, making it the
most suitable soil for spreading gossip. A small spark
could start a prairie fire.
“I don’t deserve the young miss’s praise,” Afei quickly
glanced at Jiang Si before lowering his eyes again.
Compared to unparalleled beauty, his life was certainly
more important.
He had just wanted to tease a beautiful young man on a
whim, how did he end up involved with this master and
servant pair?
“There’s another matter I need you to handle,” Jiang Si
nodded slightly to Aman.
Aman hesitated for a moment before handing over a plain
sachet: “Here.”
Afei reached out to take it, but Aman wouldn’t let go.
Afei looked at Jiang Si and increased his force.
What was going on? Hadn’t the young miss indicated to
give him the sachet? Had he misunderstood?
“Aman—” Jiang Si reminded helplessly.
Only then did Aman let go, warning: “If you lose it, I’ll kill
you!”
The young miss was too trusting, how could she give so
much money to this ruffian?
“Open it and take a look,” Jiang Si said.
Afei lowered his head and opened the sachet. Seeing the
silver notes inside, his face immediately changed: “Young
miss, this—”
“Take these and place a bet that the Old Madam of Earl
Dongping’s eyes will recover.”
Afei’s lips turned white: “This, this—”
This young miss was trusting, giving him so much money.
Wasn’t she afraid he’d run away?

Encountering Er Niu Again
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 48: Encountering Er Niu Again
Jiang Si folded her hands in front of her, sitting casually
yet elegantly, and spoke in a gentle tone: “Money is only
useful if you’re alive to spend it.”
A Fei shuddered, immediately recalling the midnight agony
that made him wish for death. Although the pain had now
disappeared, his back was instantly drenched in cold
sweat, and his heart filled with endless fear. He never
wanted to experience that kind of suffering again.
“You’ll ruin the purse if you keep squeezing it like that!” A
Man reminded him worriedly.
This money had been borrowed from Immortal Lady Liu at
the cost of their Young Miss’s face. It wasn’t easy for her.
“There are countless gambling houses in the capital, big
and small. This amount isn’t significant in any of them.
Choose three or four reputable gambling houses and
place separate bets. If successful, I’ll give you 100 taels of
silver as a reward,” Jiang Si said.
“No need for a reward, no need,” A Fei said repeatedly.
Jiang Si smiled, “Getting paid for a job is only right.
Although you come from the streets, you’re an honest
citizen. We don’t have a master-servant relationship; this
is a collaboration. Since it’s a collaboration, of course, you
should get your share when the job is done.”
“Then… thank you, Young Miss.”
“You may go now.”
A Fei carefully tucked the purse into his clothes, then
thought better of it and took it out again. He retreated to a
corner, took off his shoe, and stuffed the purse into the
shoe’s upper.
A Man rolled his eyes in disgust, “Taking off your shoes in
front of Young Miss, have you no shame?”
“This is safer,” A Fei grinned.
After years on the streets, he knew all too well that there
were many things more important than face in this world,
and this money was certainly one of them.
As A Fei reached the door, Jiang Si called out from
behind, “A Fei—”
That call was soft and clear, like a cool spring brewing tea
in this early summer tea room, calming the restlessness in
one’s heart.
A Fei couldn’t help but stop, lowering his head as he
turned, “Does Young Miss have any other instructions?”
“I just wanted to tell you, if you don’t want to be a
worthless piece of mud thrown against the street corner
for the rest of your life, do this job well.”
A Fei’s whole body trembled, and he couldn’t help but look
up at Jiang Si.
The young lady was still sitting elegantly by the window
table, her jet-black eyes clear to the bottom, inexplicably
conveying the sincerity in her words.
A Fei’s heart warmed, and he nodded hurriedly before
rushing out.
Jiang Si picked up her teacup and took a sip.
“Young Miss, are you that confident in A Fei? What if he
runs off with the money?” A Man asked.
“He won’t.”
It wasn’t so much that he wouldn’t, but that he wouldn’t
dare.
Jiang Si didn’t believe that anyone who had tasted the
Soul-Breaking Powder would have the courage to try it
again.
As she had just told A Fei, money is only good if you’re
alive to spend it.
The Soul-Breaking Powder was too potent. She had only
managed to refine a small amount these days, and it had
all been used on A Fei.
Reborn into this life, she had many things to do and
needed many hands, but she wouldn’t use her knowledge
to control innocent people.
This was her bottom line when taking revenge on those
who had wronged her in her previous life, because no
matter what, she never wanted to become like them.
Since A Fei had actively accosted A Man that day, he
certainly wasn’t innocent, and it was appropriate to
temporarily use him for errands.
Jiang Si stayed in the tea room drinking a few more sips of
tea. A Fei had already hurriedly left the teahouse.
Having never possessed even a fraction of the money now
in the purse under his foot, A Fei felt as if his walk had
become uneven, not knowing which foot to step with first.
Don’t be nervous, don’t be nervous…
A Fei was tense, muttering to himself. He had barely
walked a few steps out of the teahouse when a large dog
suddenly appeared.
“Woof—” The big dog barked at A Fei, its tone warning.
A Fei nearly jumped, staring at the dog in front of him as if
facing a great enemy, “I’m warning you, I eat dog meat. If
you dare come any closer, I won’t be polite—”
The big dog pounced, biting A Fei’s bottom.
“Ouch—” A Fei let out a miserable cry.
A Man, who saw this scene from the tea room window,
covered her mouth and laughed, “Young Miss, A Fei got
bitten by a dog.”
Jiang Si glanced outside, her expression changing.
That big dog looked like Er Niu…
“Oh, Young Miss, doesn’t this big dog look like the one
that brought you money that day?” A Man had a deep
impression of the dog that had brought money to her
Young Miss.
“Young Miss, quick, look at what it’s doing!”
The big dog, after releasing A Fei’s bottom, sniffed its way
down and finally latched onto A Fei’s shoe, refusing to let
go.
A Fei immediately panicked, kicking and hitting
desperately to struggle free, “Let go, you little beast!”
“Young Miss, surely that dog isn’t going to find the purse
we gave A Fei and bring it back to you?” A Man suddenly
realized after watching the commotion for a while.
Back then, this big dog had brought the purse of the
person who wanted to hit the Second Young Master to the
Young Miss, and the purse even contained gold leaves
and pearls.
However, thinking about the dog potentially doing the
same thing now, A Man’s mood was far from pleasant.
“Young Miss, what should we do?”
By now, quite a crowd had gathered in front of the
teahouse to watch the spectacle. If the dog were to
retrieve the purse from A Fei’s shoe and bring it to the
Young Miss in front of everyone, it would cause quite a
scene.
Jiang Si was at a loss now too.
She had many ways to deal with people, but when it came
to Er Niu, even if she had methods, she couldn’t bring
herself to use them.
In desperation, Jiang Si called out softly, “Er Niu—”
After calling out, Jiang Si shook her head.
Perhaps Er Niu’s special treatment of her last time had
subconsciously made her think that Er Niu was still that
obedient dog, but of course, that wasn’t the case.
She and Er Niu, and even Er Niu’s owner, were now
separated by past and present lives.
To Er Niu, she was just a stranger who had piqued its
interest for some reason.
Er Niu, who had been biting A Fei downstairs, suddenly
stopped and looked up at the window suspiciously.
Taking advantage of this moment, A Fei clutched his
bottom and ran as fast as he could, looking back fearfully
after running some distance.
Had that damned dog chased after him?
Seeing the big dog sitting in place, supported by its front
legs, A Fei breathed a sigh of relief and quickly
disappeared.
“Woof—” The big dog barked plaintively in the direction A
Fei had gone, then looked up towards the teahouse.
Jiang Si’s figure was no longer visible at the teahouse
window.
A Man looked outside worriedly, “Young Miss, will that dog
come up to find you?”
Jiang Si shook her head.
She didn’t know what was going on now. Had Er Niu
stopped because it heard her call?
“Woof—” The big dog raised its head and barked pitifully
again.
Jiang Si’s heart softened a bit.
Should she go down to check?
But if she had frequent contact with Er Niu, she couldn’t
avoid that bastard.
Jiang Si still harbored resentment when she thought about
her interactions with Yu Qi.
He had entered her life in an unassuming manner but had
kept his identity as the Seventh Prince hidden, only telling
her that he was a citizen of Great Zhou living on the
border, and had met the Wumiao tribe elders because of
his family’s trade with them.
It wasn’t until after she had agreed to marry him that he
revealed his identity, and wouldn’t let her back out!
If she had known earlier that he was the Seventh Prince,
she would have definitely guarded her heart and stayed
far away from him, and she wouldn’t have died so
tragically later.
“This is the beast that bit me that day, quick, beat it to
death!” A sudden angry shout came from outside the
window.

Someone Else's Dog
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 49: Someone Else’s Dog
A commotion erupted on the street.
Jiang Si quickly walked to the window and looked down.
Several men who looked like thugs had surrounded Er
Niu, cautiously approaching it. Each of them held a thick
wooden club in their hands.
Not far away stood two men side by side. One wore a
brocade robe and held a folding fan, while the other wore
a plain white robe.
Jiang Si recognized both of these men.
The one in the brocade robe was Cui Yi, son of Princess
Rongyang and General Cui Xu. He had recently been
bitten by Er Niu on the street. The other was Yang
Shengcai, grandson of the Minister of Rites.
Jiang Si’s gaze lingered on Yang Shengcai’s face for a
moment.
The young man, who didn’t look much older than her
brother, had a presentable appearance. Yet he was the
murderer who had caused her brother’s death. However,
she only knew that her second brother’s death was related
to Yang Shengcai, but didn’t know the specific
circumstances.
“Miss, that dog will be beaten to death by them. Should
this servant go down to help?” A Man poked her head out,
her face full of worry.
Jiang Si pressed her lips together as she looked down:
“Let’s wait and see for now.”
Based on her understanding of Er Niu, those thugs might
not be a match for it.
“Miss, seeing that dog surrounded by them makes this
servant quite nervous,” A Man unconsciously gripped the
windowsill.
“Its name is Er Niu.”
A Man looked at Jiang Si.
Jiang Si smiled, “That dog is called Er Niu. It has a name.”
“How does Miss know this?” A Man was puzzled.
Jiang Si hesitated, then lightly coughed and said, “I heard
its owner call it that the other day.”
A Man’s eyes rolled as she remembered the young man
who was even more handsome than Jiang Zhan, and she
blurted out, “You mean that good-looking scoundrel!”
Jiang Si’s face flushed then darkened: “What kind of
description is that!”
Was it excusable to be called a scoundrel just because
one was good-looking?
A Man blinked, looking very innocent: “This servant thinks
it’s quite an apt description.”
“Enough!” Jiang Si lightly scolded, her attention drawn
back to the commotion downstairs.
One of the thugs let out a roar, swinging his club at Er Niu.
Er Niu nimbly dodged, then leaped up and bit the man’s
wrist.
The man let out a scream of pain, dropping his club to the
ground.
Seeing this, the others immediately started swinging their
clubs wildly.
Er Niu didn’t let go of the man it was biting. Its hind legs
kicked hard, striking another man who was approaching in
the face. Then it nimbly jumped and weaved between the
thugs.
By the time the onlookers realized what was happening,
several thugs were already lying on the ground, clutching
their wounds and wailing in pain.
People couldn’t help but rub their eyes in disbelief.
This dog was incredible!
The big dog raised its head and barked once, then walked
step by step towards Cui Yi and Yang Shengcai. Along the
way, it stepped on the face of one of the fallen thugs
without even glancing down.
All the onlookers felt uneasy.
This dog wasn’t just incredible, it was arrogant too. Whose
dog was this anyway?
“Miss, why does this servant feel like Er Niu just barked at
you?”
Jiang Si didn’t answer, her gaze following the big dog’s
figure.
She had heard a reassuring tone in Er Niu’s bark just now.
Was Er Niu worried about her?
“Don’t come any closer, don’t come—” Faced with the
approaching Er Niu, Cui Yi had a massive psychological
shadow. He retreated step by step, his face pale.
“Cui Yi, your men aren’t very impressive. Several of them
can’t even handle one dog,” Yang Shengcai mocked,
stroking his chin.
“Cui Cheng, Cui Gong, are you all dead? Come out
quickly!” Cui Yi shouted.
Two figures almost simultaneously landed in front of Cui
Yi.
Cui Yi’s expression relaxed, and he waved his folding fan.
Fortunately, he had the foresight to realize these
household guards were unreliable after being surrounded
by a pack of dogs last time. So he had pestered his father
until he was given two old personal guards who had
retired from the battlefield.
These two old guards were battle-hardened killers who
wouldn’t bat an eye at taking a life. Dealing with a lame
dog would be a piece of cake for them.
Jiang Si, who had been watching the scene unfold,
suddenly became serious.
She could smell the scent of veterans who had been
through numerous battles with these two men.
“Miss, should we go down? This servant feels these two
men are not simple,” A Man also grew nervous.
“No, we can’t help much if we go down. Standing here
gives us a better vantage point to react,” Jiang Si
pondered for a moment, suppressing her impulsive
thoughts.
She had learned a few clever moves from Yu Qi before,
which might work to catch ordinary people off guard, but
clearly wouldn’t be enough in a real fight. As for A Man,
her martial skills would probably be considered flashy but
impractical against these two ordinary-looking middle-
aged men.
Er Niu was very sensitive to the aura of the two middle-
aged men. Its hair stood on end, and it let out a low growl.
The two men and the dog quickly engaged in combat.
The onlookers held their breath, seeing the brutality of war
in this fight between two men and a dog.
One of the men had a chunk of flesh bitten out of his calf
by Er Niu, blood dripping down. Er Niu no longer had the
composure it showed when dealing with the thugs earlier.
It was panting heavily with its tongue out.
That lame leg had ultimately slowed the big dog down at
the crucial moment.
“Miss, it looks like Er Niu might be in trouble,” A Man
couldn’t sit still as the situation downstairs became more
intense.
Jiang Si put a teacup into A Man’s hand: “Hold onto this. If
Er Niu can’t hold on, throw it at the man in the brocade
robe.”
Jiang Si was referring to Cui Yi.
Originally, she hated Yang Shengcai more than the two,
but since the two middle-aged men were Cui Yi’s people,
they would undoubtedly prioritize Cui Yi’s safety.
“Beast, let’s see how arrogant you are now!” Perhaps
frustrated by being put in such a predicament by a lame
dog, one of the men suddenly pulled out a gleaming
dagger from his leg wrappings and stabbed at Er Niu.
“Kill it! We’ll have dog meat today!” Cui Yi shouted
excitedly.
They should have used a knife to skin this beast long ago,
but these two old fools had to be so stubborn.
According to the laws of the Great Zhou Dynasty, ordinary
people were not allowed to carry weapons, but privileged
classes like Cui Yi were not restricted.
The shining dagger reflected cold light in the sunlight,
causing the onlookers to involuntarily step back.
A Man hesitated no longer and threw the teacup with all
her might.
The celadon teacup traced an arc through the air,
accurately hitting Cui Yi on the forehead.
Cui Yi let out a miserable cry and fell backward.
The two men fighting Er Niu quickly rushed towards Cui
Yi.
However, a black and yellow figure showed no weakness,
reaching there before them.
The large dog, about half the height of a person, pressed
one front paw on Cui Yi’s forehead, which was bleeding
profusely. It leisurely wagged its tail while watching the
approaching men.
Cui Yi was so frightened he couldn’t even feel the pain in
his forehead. He stammered, “Quick, save me—”
“Beast, get away now!” one of the middle-aged men
shouted.
Er Niu glanced at him.
The man was stunned for a moment, suddenly feeling as if
his eyes were playing tricks on him.
Why did he seem to see contempt in this dog’s eyes?
It must have been a mistake.
Then, the man saw the big dog lift its paw slightly and
slowly press it against Cui Yi’s throat.
The entire scene fell silent.
This dog must have become a spirit!

impulsive,” Cui Yi stammered, trembling as he lay pinned
to the ground by the large dog, not daring to move an inch.
Dogs were far more terrifying than humans. At least with
people, one could reason or bargain, but with dogs, there
was no room for negotiation. If it decided to swipe at his
throat with its paw, he would meet an untimely demise!
The more Cui Yi thought about it, the more terrified he
became. He could feel the dog’s hot breath on his face,
with occasional drops of saliva falling onto him.
“Waaah! Waaah! Waaah!” Unable to bear the pressure
any longer, the young master, who had been pampered
since childhood, burst into tears.
The initially tense and thrilling scene suddenly turned
awkward with his crying.
Many onlookers secretly thought: This powdered pretty
boy might act high and mighty when bullying others, but
look at him now, such a coward under a dog’s paw. The
dog might as well do everyone a favor and get rid of him.
Two middle-aged men had contempt hidden deep in their
eyes. To think that the one they served was such a
pathetic creature.
However, regardless of their thoughts, if anything
happened to Cui Yi under their watch, they would face
severe consequences. One of them quietly took out a
sleeve crossbow.
This was a forbidden weapon. If discovered, the
consequences could be either minor or major, depending
on whether someone decides to pursue the matter.
“This is bad,” Jiang Si thought from his high vantage point.
His view was much clearer than that of the onlookers on
the street, and he immediately spotted the half-concealed
crossbow in the man’s sleeve.
Such a ranged weapon posed a significant threat to Erniu.
Jiang Si could no longer remain calm. He turned to go
downstairs but then heard a familiar voice: “What are you
planning to do to my dog?”
The voice was as clear as mountain streams, devoid of
any worldly air. It immediately drew everyone’s attention,
and even Cui Yi instinctively raised his head slightly to
locate the source of the voice.
Erniu, with one paw pressed against Cui Yi’s face, barked
affectionately at the newcomer.
Yu Qi strode over, his gaze cold. “What are you planning
to do to my dog?”
Cui Yi, still under the dog’s paw, was ready to pound the
ground in frustration. He gritted his teeth and said, “Look
clearly! Who’s doing what to whom?”
“Woof!” Erniu barked a warning at Cui Yi.
Cui Yi immediately froze, not daring to move a muscle. He
desperately tried to signal his companion, Yang Shengcai,
with his eyes.
Yang Shengcai’s mood at this moment was equally
complex. This dog was indeed fierce; he had certainly
learned something new. Why was the dog he raised as
docile as a lamb?
Other people’s dogs…
Yang Shengcai cast an envious glance at the dog’s owner,
and his eyes lit up when he saw the man’s appearance.
This man was incredibly handsome!
“Is this your dog?” What should have been an arrogant
question now came out in a much softer tone.
Cui Yi, still being tormented by the dog’s paw, wanted
nothing more than to jump up and kick Yang Shengcai.
This bastard’s old habit of being swayed by good looks
was acting up again.
“You… you quickly get your dog off me,” Cui Yi called out,
softening his tone, knowing he couldn’t rely on his
companion and not daring to provoke the large dog.
Yu Qi had already walked up to Cui Yi and was looking
down at him.
From Cui Yi’s angle, he could see the cold indifference
gathered in the other’s obsidian-like eyes.
That gaze filled this young master, who had grown up
treasured like gold and jade, with a sudden, deep sense of
shame.
As soon as he was out of this predicament, he would
make this guy pay!
“Apologize to my dog,” Yu Qi said.
“What?” Cui Yi thought he had misheard.
Yang Shengcai, who had recovered from his initial
amazement, chimed in, “Brother, aren’t you mistaken? It’s
you who didn’t control this little beast properly, allowing it
to attack my friend. My friend is still pinned down by it, and
you’re asking him to apologize for it?”
Yu Qi looked at Yang Shengcai with surprise. “Isn’t
disciplining you your father’s responsibility? What does it
have to do with me?”
“Disciplining me? What are you talking about—”
Some of the onlookers who caught on couldn’t help but
laugh.
As the laughter spread, Yang Shengcai finally understood.
This guy had called him a beast!
“You insolent fool! How dare you insult me!” Yang
Shengcai was instantly enraged with embarrassment.
Who was Yang Shengcai? His grandfather was the current
Minister of Rites, and his sister was the Crown Princess.
He was one of the gilded young masters of the capital.
How could he be publicly ridiculed as a little beast?
This could not be tolerated!
Yang Shengcai uncoiled the steel whip from his waist and
lashed out at Yu Qi.
Seeing its master being attacked, Erniu remained
surprisingly calm, lowering its head to lick Cui Yi’s face a
few times.
Cui Yi’s vision blurred, and surprisingly, the one he hated
most at this moment wasn’t Yu Qi or the big dog, but Yang
Shengcai.
This son of a turtle was going to be the death of him!
The whip struck out at Yu Qi with fierce momentum.
Yu Qi smiled and caught the long whip with his hand.
“Let go!” Yang Shengcai shouted, furious.
“What’s going on here?” A squad of officials finally arrived,
fashionably late.
The spectators automatically parted to both sides, secretly
sympathizing with Yu Qi.
It would be a shame if such a handsome young man were
to be arrested and thrown in jail.
Yang Shengcai suddenly felt emboldened and said
angrily, “Are you Five Districts Command just eating for
free? A vicious dog attacks people on the main street, and
villains commit violence—is this how you maintain order in
the capital?”
The lead official raised his sword at Yu Qi and shouted,
“Let go!”
Yu Qi flashed a contemptuous smile at Yang Shengcai
and tightened his grip.
Yang Shengcai’s anger flared.
This fellow was still defiant in front of the officials!
He instinctively pulled the whip back, but to his surprise,
the other party suddenly let go.
The momentum sent Yang Shengcai stumbling back
several steps, right into the old bodyguard holding the
sleeve crossbow.
The old bodyguard inwardly cursed his bad luck, but
before he could hide the crossbow, a black and yellow blur
rushed over and bit his wrist.
The sudden pain caused the old bodyguard to loosen his
grip, and the sleeve crossbow fell.
Erniu snatched up the crossbow and ran to Yu Qi’s side.
Seeing its master give a casual glance to the lead official,
the dog seemed to instantly understand its master’s
intention. It carried the crossbow to the lead official’s feet
and dropped it there.
The lead official was dumbfounded.
Possessing a concealed crossbow was no small offense!
“What are you waiting for? Arrest this man and his dog!”
Cui Yi shouted as he got up.
The lead official’s mouth twitched, his eyes fixed
uncomfortably on the glaring evidence of the crossbow.
With so many people watching, it didn’t seem easy to
show favoritism.
Cui Yi followed the lead official’s gaze and said
dismissively, “That’s a weapon my guard uses to protect
me. What’s there to look at? Why haven’t you made the
arrest yet?”
“Yes, why haven’t you made the arrest, Officer?” Yu Qi
calmly looked at the crossbow on the ground. “I don’t
believe there’s any law in the Great Zhou Dynasty that
allows servants of civil officials’ sons to possess
concealed crossbows, is there?”
A bead of cold sweat rolled down the lead official’s
forehead.
If it had been a dagger or something similar, it might have
been excusable, but a deadly crossbow!
Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, the lead official
discreetly gave Cui Yi a reassuring look. “Young Master
Cui, I apologize, but I must take these two into custody.”
He then turned to Yu Qi and said coldly, “Allowing a
vicious dog to run amok is a crime of public disturbance.
Take this man away, and put his dog to death right here
on the street!”

Money-Bringing Dog
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 51: The Money-Bringing Dog
A Man, standing by the second-floor window, tugged
urgently at Jiang Si’s sleeve: “Miss, did you hear? Those
constables want to beat Er Niu to death. Does its owner
have any way to stop this?”
Ever since Yu Qi appeared, Jiang Si had lost her previous
composure. She gripped her hands so tightly that her
knuckles turned white.
“What?” she asked, distracted.
A Man held her forehead in exasperation: “My goodness,
Miss, how can you be so absentminded? Er Niu is about
to be beaten to death by those constables.”
“That won’t happen,” Jiang Si murmured.
A Man’s eyes widened: “How can it not? Two fists can’t
beat four hands, let alone Er Niu is just a dog. It certainly
can’t escape so many constables.”
Jiang Si gradually calmed down: “Let’s watch. Its owner
should have a way.”
Yu Qi was different from other princes. Due to some
special reasons, he had lived outside the palace since
childhood and later went to the South. This year, he
should have returned to the capital from the South for a
while, and not long after, this little-known Seventh Prince
disappeared from the capital like a fleeting epiphany.
In her previous life, she naturally didn’t know Yu Qi at this
time. The reason she knew this information was after her
wedding.
Yu Qi’s mother, Consort Xian, came from Duke Anguo’s
family and was Ji Chongyi’s aunt. By this reckoning, she
would have to address Yu Qi as “Cousin” along with Ji
Chongyi.
Although she was veiled and unaware of the outside
circumstances on her wedding day, she later heard about
Yu Qi’s attendance at the wedding from the gossip of
maids and servants.
Consort Xian had two sons, the Fourth Prince and the
Seventh Prince.
For her nephew’s grand wedding, although Consort Xian
couldn’t conveniently return, the Fourth Prince would
certainly attend. However, after the Seventh Prince
returned to the capital from the South, he rarely appeared
in public and had never attended any banquets. People
secretly said that this prince had a cold and strange
temperament, so when he appeared at the wedding
banquet at Duke Anguo’s mansion, it greatly satisfied
people’s curiosity.
It was said that the Seventh Prince was happy that day
and drank too much.
Jiang Si recalled the past events, hiding behind the
window and watching the noble young man on the street
below.
Yu Qi had just returned to the capital, and the constables
of the Five Districts Command certainly didn’t know his
true identity. But he was never one to be taken advantage
of. It wouldn’t be easy for others to harm Er Niu in front of
him.
Thinking this way, Jiang Si became increasingly calm and
even took an interest in seeing how Yu Qi would extricate
himself from the situation.
She leaned against the carved window frame, her profile
slightly exposed.
The young man below, as sturdy as a pine tree, seemed
to sense something and looked up in that direction.
In that fleeting glance, the young man felt his heart
pounding, and his jade-like face was tinged with a faint
blush.
“Take them away!” Unaware of the underlying currents,
the lead constable waved his hand, and immediately many
constables surrounded Yu Qi and the big dog with their
weapons.
“Letting a dog run amok?” Yu Qi’s expression returned to
normal, his slightly raised phoenix eyes carrying a
nonchalant smile. “Officer, you’ve just arrived. Which eye
of yours saw me letting a dog run amok?”
The lead constable sneered, “We’re not blind. We just saw
your dog pin down, Young Master Cui. If this isn’t a vicious
dog attacking people, what is it? To ensure the safety of
the citizens, such a vicious dog must be put down!”
Hearing this, the onlooking citizens nodded in agreement.
This big dog was indeed scary. Although it was satisfying
to watch it rough up these young masters, what if it went
mad and bit someone else…
Yu Qi gently stroked the top of the dog’s head and smiled
faintly, “Officer, you’ve got it wrong. My dog doesn’t bite
people without reason. It was acting in self-defense.”
At this point, Yu Qi’s expression turned stern, and he said
coldly, “These two evil servants intended to harm an
imperial official. Officer, what crime would you call that?”
“An imperial official?” The lead constable couldn’t help but
straighten up, his tone becoming polite, “May I ask who
you are—”
In this capital, there was no shortage of officials. A roof tile
falling on the street could hit a fifth-rank official. To survive
long in this place, one had to be quick-witted.
Yu Qi ignored the lead constable and pinched the thick fur
on Er Niu’s neck.
Er Niu stood up, shook off the dust on its fur, and suddenly
raised its front legs to rest on the lead constable’s
shoulders.
The lead constable was terrified.
“Don’t panic, Officer. Look at the bronze tag on its neck,”
Yu Qi gently reminded.
The lead constable, pale-faced, lowered his gaze to the
dog’s neck. Only then did he notice that the big dog was
wearing a collar. Due to the dog’s thick fur, the collar of
the same color as its fur was easily overlooked.
Seeing the lead constable’s lack of reaction, Er Niu
impatiently shook its head vigorously, causing dog hair to
fly everywhere. A small bronze tag attached to the collar
fell out from somewhere.
The lead constable reached out and flipped the bronze
tag, only to see written on it: “Imperial Bestowed Fifth-
Rank Howling Sky General…”
The lead constable’s hand trembled, and the bronze tag
fell back.
Er Niu let out a disdainful “Woof.”
The lead constable’s gaze at the big dog was now beyond
words. For a good while, he couldn’t speak.
Damn it, this lowly dog outranked him!
Cui Yi, his face covered in blood, was about to explode
with anger: “What’s going on? Are you going to arrest
them or not?”
The lead constable snapped out of his extreme shock and
waved his hand: “Arrest them! Take away these two who
are carrying concealed weapons!”
“What?” Cui Yi was stunned.
This wasn’t how the script was supposed to go!
Seeing several constables start to make arrests, Cui Yi
grabbed the lead constable’s sleeve and berated him in a
lowered voice: “I say, did you take the wrong medicine
today? You’re arresting my people too?”
For young masters like Cui Yi and Yang Shengcai, who
were at the top of the spoiled rich kids, these constables
were old acquaintances. There had never been a time
when they were so disrespectful.
The lead constable smiled bitterly: “Young Master Cui,
with so many citizens watching, we have to go through the
motions. Otherwise, not only will I lose my job, but those
censors might also cause trouble for the General.”
If this troublemaking child were his son, he would have
drowned him in the toilet long ago.
“Fine then, you can take my people away, but this dog
must be killed!”
“That’s not possible—”
“Why not? Even if this guy is some kind of imperial official,
does that mean his dog gets to ascend to heaven too,
making you act like such a bootlicker?”
The lead constable was also getting annoyed and said
coolly, “Young Master Cui, please don’t make things
difficult for this lowly official. The imperial official is this
esteemed dog.”
“What?” Cui Yi looked bewildered.
To avoid further complications, the lead constable stepped
forward and whispered a few words in Cui Yi’s ear.
Cui Yi suddenly widened his eyes, looking not at the big
dog, but at Yu Qi.
In the whole world, only one person’s dog was a fifth-rank
official. The identity of the person before him was now
obvious.
For a spoiled young master who had been living
comfortably while bullying others, what was most
important? Of course, it was having access to inside
information!
Cui Yi’s lips trembled, and he suddenly forced a smile at
the big dog: “Well, I’ve greatly offended you today. My
apologies.”
“Cui Yi, have you gone insane?” Yang Shengcai nearly
dropped his jaw in shock.
Cui Yi wiped the dried blood on his face and pulled Yang
Shengcai away: “You carry on with your business. I’ll take
this idiot away first.”
“Are you itching for a beating?”
The two quickly walked away, and the thugs scattered,
leaving only the two old personal guards on the verge of
tears.
Following such an idiotic master was truly the worst luck!
“You—” The lead constable opened his mouth.
Yu Qi shook his head imperceptibly and patted the big
dog’s head: “Er Niu, let’s go.”
“Miss, Er Niu is fine. Everyone has left,” A Man patted her
chest in relief, her curiosity rising. “Is Er Niu’s owner such
a young imperial official?”
The people downstairs had deliberately lowered their
voices when speaking, so others couldn’t hear clearly.
Thinking of a certain possibility, Jiang Si smiled: “Perhaps.
Let’s go too.”
After the crowd of onlookers gradually dispersed, the
mistress and servant pair went downstairs and walked
unhurriedly towards the East Peace Marquis’s mansion.
From Tianxiang Tea House to the East Peace Marquis’s
mansion, they had to pass through several streets. As the
mistress and servant reached near Quezi Hutong, they
suddenly heard a familiar “Woof.”
Jiang Si’s footsteps faltered.
A Man watched the big dog running towards them with a
sapphire blue purse in its mouth, exclaiming with delight:
“Miss, Er Niu has come to bring you money again!”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 52: Selling Oneself to Pay Off Debt
Erniu quickly ran to Jiang Si’s side, wagging its tail and
nuzzling her hand with its large mouth.
Seeing the expectation in the dog’s eyes, Jiang Si couldn’t
help but smile. “Is this for me?”
Erniu made a whimpering sound like it was spoiled and
pushed the pouch into Jiang Si’s hand.
Jiang Si didn’t have the heart to refuse the dog’s goodwill.
She opened the pouch, looked inside, and then handed it
to A Man with a smile. “Go back and store the gold leaves
and silver ingots safely. Burn the pouch in the fire.”
A Man happily agreed. She peeked into the pouch and her
eyes lit up. “Miss, there’s even more this time than last
time. Are we keeping it for ourselves?”
She remembered that last time, the Miss had disliked the
contents of the pouch and gave everything to the Second
Young Master, which had secretly pained her heart.
“Let’s keep it,” Jiang Si said. Once bitten, twice shy – there
was no need to turn away money.
Soft footsteps approached. Erniu suddenly turned its head
and barked twice, as if urging something.
Seeing who appeared, Jiang Si frowned. She should have
known – where Erniu was, he wouldn’t be far behind.
“A Man, let’s go,” Jiang Si said, turning to leave before Yu
Qi could reach them. But she felt her skirt being tugged.
Jiang Si looked down. The dog’s watery eyes were wide
open, its face full of innocence as it wagged its tail.
“Erniu, let go,” Jiang Si said helplessly.
She was starting to suspect that Erniu had been reborn
along with her. How else could she explain the dog’s
unusually affectionate behavior towards her? After all,
Erniu was a dog that had experienced warfare, not some
pet trained to please people.
Erniu wagged its tail, pretending not to understand. It
didn’t care what she said; it wasn’t letting go.
Even A Man couldn’t help but roll her eyes, thinking to
herself: Why did she have the feeling that this dog was
even craftier than her?
During this brief struggle, Yu Qi had already arrived in
front of Jiang Si. They were now only about ten feet apart.
At this point, Jiang Si calmed down. She wore a distant
smile and nodded slightly to Yu Qi. “Young Master Yu,
what a coincidence.”
Yu Qi looked at the young woman so close to him and
smiled brightly. “I came specifically to find Miss Jiang.”
Jiang Si’s smile faded. “What does Young Master Yu
mean by this?”
Yu Qi suddenly bowed deeply to Jiang Si. “I want to thank
Miss Jiang for saving Erniu today.”
Jiang Si stepped aside, avoiding Yu Qi’s bow. She said
coolly, “Young Master Yu must be joking. I didn’t do
anything.”
“Woof! Woof!” Erniu suddenly barked at Jiang Si.
Nonsense, it was saved by Si Si. Its master should hurry
up and repay the favor.
Yu Qi smiled. “You see, Miss Jiang? Even Erniu admits it.”
The dog eagerly nodded its head.
Jiang Si ignored the coordinated act between man and
dog, firmly denying everything. “I don’t know what Young
Master Yu is talking about. It’s getting late, I should return
home.”
“Woof!” Erniu barked once to draw attention, then ran to
the base of a wall and started digging.
A Man covered her mouth and murmured, “Could Erniu
have hidden another pouch here?”
Jiang Si glared at A Man. When did her maid become so
money-obsessed?
A Man sheepishly fell silent.
Soon, Erniu returned carrying something in its mouth. It
came to Jiang Si and placed the object on the ground.
“Oh, it’s that teacup!” A Man exclaimed as soon as she
saw it.
The teacup was indeed sturdy. After being thrown at Cui
Yi and landing on the roadside, it only had a few small
cracks on its body but was otherwise undamaged.
Erniu barked once at Jiang Si, it’s meaning clear: With
both dog and physical evidence, will you still deny it?
Jiang Si’s mouth twitched involuntarily. Erniu still couldn’t
break its habit of hiding things randomly!
“Miss Jiang used this teacup to save Erniu when it was in
danger, employing the strategy of ‘besieging Wei to
rescue Zhao,'” Yu Qi said, smiling as he looked at the
young woman’s embarrassed expression, his gaze tender.
His little girl had grown into a peerlessly beautiful young
woman. Unfortunately, she had long forgotten their brief
encounter and didn’t seem to like him very much.
As Yu Qi thought this, his eyes dimmed.
He had no experience in how to win a girl’s heart.
He had even less experience in how to win the heart of a
girl who didn’t like him.
Never mind, he’d just have to be thick-skinned and stick
close to her for now.
Jiang Si looked away and said coolly, “Even so, Young
Master Yu needn’t be so polite. I suppose Erniu and I just
get along well. It was a small gesture, nothing more.”
Yu Qi said seriously, “Miss Jiang doesn’t understand the
bond between Erniu and me. What seems like a small
gesture to you is a life-saving grace to me.”
Jiang Si frowned.
She suddenly felt that this scoundrel might say something
shameless.
“Ahem.” The handsome young man’s cheeks flushed red.
He seemed unable to meet the young woman’s eyes.
“They say a life-saving grace cannot be repaid. If Miss
Jiang has any request, I will do my utmost to fulfill it.”
Jiang Si’s heart skipped a beat.
Yu Qi’s given name was a single character, “Jin.” She
hadn’t expected him to reveal his true name so early in his
life.
No, wait. He was still using the surname “Yu” in front of
her.
Realizing this, the ripples in Jiang Si’s heart calmed down
again.
At this point, A Sang, the Holy Maiden of the Wu Miao,
was already gone, and he had met her in the capital.
Met her, who looked just like the Holy Maiden A Sang.
Just like in her previous life, he was still using the identity
of Yu Qi to approach her, intending to win her heart so she
would willingly become a substitute for his beloved.
Fortunately, with the lessons from her previous life, she
wouldn’t be so foolish again.
It was good that she was still Jiang Si, the fourth miss of
the East Peace Earl’s manor who had her engagement
broken off, and not the Wu Miao Holy Maiden living under
someone else’s identity. Even if Yu Qi schemed, they
could never become husband and wife again.
Understanding this, Jiang Si’s tense body relaxed, and the
smile on her lips became more composed. “I have no
requests. It would be best if Young Master Yu simply
forgot about today’s events.”
Yu Jin felt a pang in his heart.
The young woman seemed as delicate as a willow, but in
front of him, she had erected walls of copper and iron. No
matter how he tried, he couldn’t chip even a small hole in
the defenses around her heart.
“Whine—” Erniu swept its tail across Yu Jin’s feet and let
out a disapproving bark.
It had given the betrothal gifts twice already. Its master’s
incompetence was worrying.
Didn’t this foolish master know that dogs lose fur when
they worry too much?
“A drop of kindness should be repaid with a gushing
spring, let alone a life-saving grace. If Jin were to forget,
wouldn’t that make me an ungrateful person?” Yu Jin’s
face wore a composed smile, but his heart was extremely
nervous.
He had said so much, just short of offering himself in
marriage. Surely she wouldn’t still keep him at arm’s
length?
The guards had said that his appearance was considered
handsome in the eyes of young ladies. Perhaps, maybe,
he could win a bit of her favor?
Jiang Si took a deep breath and said with a light smile, “If
that’s the case, then just give me money.”
“Hm?” Yu Jin’s expression twisted for a moment. He
raised his hand to rub his nose.
He thought he must have misheard.
“Miss, miss, what are you saying?” A Man held her
forehead, almost in tears.
This scoundrel was good-looking, had status, and even
had a dog that could pick up money. Shouldn’t her
mistress pay a little attention to her image?
As for pouches, it would be better to take things slowly…
“Since Young Master Yu feels uneasy and insists on
repaying, then just give money. That way, Young Master
Yu can be at ease,” Jiang Si said coolly.
With her appearing so greedy and lazy, surely he would
keep his distance now?
“How much does Miss Jiang think is appropriate?” Yu Jin
quickly recovered and asked with a light laugh.
That laugh was like aged wine suddenly uncorked,
emitting an intoxicating aroma.
Jiang Si’s face inexplicably heated up. She inwardly
cursed herself, then quickly made excuses for herself.
It wasn’t that her willpower was insufficient; it was just that
this scoundrel was too blessed by nature.
The appreciation of beauty was inherent in everyone.
Jiang Si held up one finger. “Young Master Yu values
Erniu so highly. I imagine you’d feel uneasy if it were too
little. So how about one thousand taels?”
“One thousand taels, not much,” Yu Qi smiled.
“Mm.” Jiang Si waited for him to take out the money.
“But I don’t have any money. It seems I can only sell
myself to pay off the debt.”
“What?”

Commotion at the Gate
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 53: Commotion at the Gate
Jiang Si knew she wasn’t the brightest person, but never
had she felt so confused before.
How did this turn into him selling himself to repay a debt?
Weren’t they just talking about showing gratitude a
moment ago?
The young lady’s bewilderment drew a slight smile to Yu
Jin’s lips, though his expression remained serious. “I’m
truly ashamed that I have nothing of value except my
strength. Why don’t I run errands for Miss Jiang from now
on? Miss Jiang can pay whatever fair amount for the
errands and record it until it reaches one thousand taels of
silver. That will settle the debt.”
Yu Jin’s tone grew particularly earnest: “Please don’t
overpay for the errands just because of Second Brother
Jiang’s sake. That would defeat my purpose of showing
gratitude and make me feel even more indebted.”
Jiang Si’s beautiful eyes widened in surprise.
Selling himself to repay a debt—and not even as a popular
entertainer in a pleasure house, but just as an errand boy,
insisting on market rates? Was he planning to stick to her
for life?
A prince deceives her by claiming poverty just to be her
errand boy—his intentions couldn’t be good.
That was exactly how he had pestered and tricked her in
her previous life.
This shameless scoundrel!
“Men and women should maintain proper distance. I don’t
need anyone to run errands,” Jiang Si said coldly.
“But wasn’t that man who left Tianxiang Teahouse running
errands for Miss Jiang?” Yu Jin’s tone carried a hint of
grievance.
A man?
After a moment’s thought, Jiang Si understood and grew
annoyed. “Has Young Master Yu been following me?”
No wonder it was such a coincidence that Er Niu bit A-
Fei’s bottom right after he left the teahouse.
At this thought, Jiang Si’s gaze fell on Er Niu with a
complicated expression.
Both times she’d seen Er Niu, it had bitten someone’s
bottom. She never knew Er Niu had such a habit.
Remembering how Er Niu used to affectionately lick her
palm in her previous life, Jiang Si’s mouth twitched.
This wasn’t a good habit—it needed to change!
Though Er Niu couldn’t know its mistress’s thoughts, it
seemed to sense her disapproval and whimpered while
wagging its tail vigorously.
Yu Jin stroked the dog’s fluffy head and smiled. “Miss
Jiang misunderstands. I was just taking a casual walk with
Er Niu, but Er Niu…”
Yu Jin hesitated, unsure whether to continue.
Concerned about Er Niu, Jiang Si couldn’t help asking,
“What about Er Niu?”
With her prompting, Yu Jin continued righteously: “Er Niu
smelled Miss Jiang’s scent on that man, that’s why it
wouldn’t let him leave.”
How infuriating—why would that man carry her scent?
Logic told Yu Jin that judging by the man’s dress and
manner, he was likely just a street runner, and Jiang Si’s
interaction with him couldn’t have been intimate. The man
could only have been an errand boy.
But still, why was he so angry?
The Seventh Prince, nearly exploding with anger,
maintained a perfectly calm smile, careful not to let the
young lady notice his true feelings.
“What nonsense are you speaking?” Jiang Si’s cheeks
flushed, wanting to kick Yu Jin.
“Woof! Woof!” Er Niu barked as if agreeing with its master.
Yu Jin smiled faintly. “That’s why I assumed he must be
running errands for Miss Jiang since you had just met at
Tianxiang Teahouse.”
“And so?” Jiang Si glanced at him sideways.
Yu Jin’s expression turned serious. “I believe I would be
better at running errands than him, and while Miss Jiang
has to pay him, I’m working to repay a debt, so it’s free.”
Jiang Si sneered. “But I find him more convenient to use.
Moreover, Young Master Yu is my brother’s good friend. If
I used you as an errand boy, my brother would be the first
to object.”
She stepped back, her expression returning to normal.
“Young Master Yu, stop with these impractical
suggestions. If you have money to repay the thousand
taels, then pay it. If not, let it be. We’re neither relatives
nor close friends, and men and women should maintain
proper distance. We should keep our distance from now
on.”
“Miss Jiang makes a fair point.” Yu Jin lowered his eyes,
his thick, long lashes casting shadows beneath, showing
boundless loneliness.
Handsome people always had advantages—seeing his
expression, even A-Man, who had been silent all along,
couldn’t help but feel sympathetic.
Young Miss seemed a bit heartless.
Yu Jin quickly smiled again. “In that case, I’ll work hard to
save money and repay Miss Jiang as soon as I have it.”
Without waiting for Jiang Si’s response, Yu Jin cupped his
hands in farewell and patted Er Niu. “Er Niu, let’s go.”
Know when to retreat and return another day—that was
the principle.
Yu Jin left promptly with his dog, leaving Jiang Si standing
there as realization slowly dawned on her.
It seemed that scoundrel had tricked her again—what did
he mean by ‘repay as soon as he had money’?
“Young Miss, they’ve already left.”
“Hmm?”
“Aren’t we leaving?”
The Young Miss seemed somewhat reluctant to leave.
“Let’s go.”
After walking for about a quarter-hour, the master and
servant could see the main gate of Earl Dongping’s
mansion. The usually quiet entrance was now surrounded
by quite a crowd.
“Young Miss, has something happened at our mansion?”
Jiang Si stopped.
She had secretly escalated the confrontation between
Divine Woman Liu and Second Madam into a citywide
spectacle. Second Madam wouldn’t just sit idle.
Divine Woman Liu’s troubles must have caught up with
her.
“Fourth Sister, so here you are.” Jiang Zhan hurried over,
wearing a schadenfreude smile. “That fraudulent mystic
has been confronted at our door.”
Jiang Si rubbed her temples and asked helplessly,
“Second Brother wants to see Divine Woman Liu in
trouble?”
“Of course! Though Second Sister and I don’t get along,
we’re still family. This witch openly claimed Second Sister
was possessed by evil spirits, causing her great
embarrassment. How could I possibly like her?”
It was frightening to think about—Second Sister was
already married and Grandmother’s favorite, yet she
suffered so much from this incident. What if that witch had
pointed at Fourth Sister instead?
Fourth Sister had no mother to protect her and had broken
off her engagement. She might not have been able to stay
in the Earl’s mansion if that had happened.
Jiang Si silently observed her brother.
“What’s wrong? Did I say something incorrect?” Jiang
Zhan noticed Jiang Si’s strange look and rubbed his nose.
“No, Second Brother is right.” Jiang Si stood on tiptoe to
remove a fallen leaf from Jiang Zhan’s shoulder.
Though her brother might not possess outstanding talent
or subtle thoughts, his pure heart was unmatched by
anyone.
Jiang Zhan smiled and pulled Jiang Si along. “Come, let
Second Brother take you to watch the commotion.”
Jiang Si let Jiang Zhan lead her to a large tree in front of
Earl Dongping’s mansion.
“Look, see that woman in blue? Her child died of diarrhea
after drinking Divine Woman Liu’s charm water…” As
Jiang Zhan spoke, he pressed something into Jiang Si’s
hands.
Jiang Si looked down to find a box of sweet rice puffs.
“Try some, Fourth Sister. Lame Zhang’s sweet rice puffs
from North Street are the sweetest.”
Jiang Si couldn’t help but laugh as she held the box of rice
puffs.
Watching a spectacle while eating sweet rice puffs—is
truly a capital city tradition.
On the stone steps of Earl Dongping’s mansion, the
steward bowed to the woman in blue: “Our mansion only
invited Divine Woman Liu to perform rituals. We had no
idea she had caused deaths before. Please wait a
moment, madam. If Divine Woman Liu harmed your child,
our mansion won’t shield her…

Chapter 54: Mutual Understanding
Jiang Si handed the sweet rice puffs to A-Man. “Second
Brother, let’s enter the mansion.”
Jiang Zhan grabbed Jiang Si’s arm. “Don’t go through the
main gate—I’m worried you’ll get crushed in the crowd.”
Jiang Si shook her head. “No, we’ll use the main gate.”
“Ah—” Seeing Jiang Si already walking forward, Jiang
Zhan hurried to catch up.
With so many people around, he worried someone might
carelessly bump into his sister.
“Make way, make way!”
As Jiang Zhan cleared a path for Jiang Si, she had already
reached the vermillion main gate.
The steward was startled by Jiang Si’s appearance, then
quickly greeted her: “Fourth Miss has returned.”
“Mm.” Jiang Si nodded gracefully, pausing slightly.
At this moment, unexpected trouble arose—the woman in
blue suddenly grabbed Jiang Si’s wrist and shrilly
demanded, “Are you one of the mansion’s masters?”
“Let go!” Jiang Zhan rushed over, raising his hand to strike
the woman.
“Second Brother, don’t be rash.”
Though Jiang Si spoke softly, Jiang Zhan immediately
stopped, but still shouted angrily at the woman: “It’s one
thing to involve our Earl’s mansion in your dispute with
Divine Woman Liu, but why are you grabbing my sister?”
From Jiang Si’s attire and the steward’s greeting, any
observant person would know she was one of the Earl’s
daughters—her status was impossible to hide.
Hearing this, the crowd burst into discussion.
While the woman’s loss of her child deserved sympathy,
there was no justification for grabbing a young lady. Even
if it weren’t a noble household, any father or brother would
be angry at such treatment.
“Sister, please let go quickly. If our Young Miss gets
frightened, the family masters will be furious—” the
steward persuaded good-naturedly, though secretly
annoyed with Jiang Si.
Fourth Miss should have known better—seeing so many
people gathered here, she should have used the back
gate instead of walking straight into this situation.
The woman tightened her grip on Jiang Si, raising her
voice: “I don’t care! Since I can’t see any other masters of
your household, I’ll settle for her!”
Jiang Zhan was furious but saw Jiang Si slightly shake her
head at him.
Ever since Jiang Si had predicted that Ji Chongyi wouldn’t
be able to marry another noble lady after breaking their
engagement, Jiang Zhan had deeply respected his sister’s
wisdom. Seeing her gesture now, he gradually calmed
down, though he continued glaring at the woman in
silence.
Jiang Si’s sidelong glance swept across the steward’s
face, and beneath her gauze veil, her lips curved slightly.
This woman hadn’t disappointed her expectations—
entering through the main gate had indeed led to being
stopped, just as planned.
Though the Great Zhou Dynasty was becoming more
liberal, with increasingly relaxed restrictions on women—to
the point where it wasn’t unusual for common women to
chase and beat men in the streets—it would still reflect
poorly on a noble young lady to publicly argue with
troublemakers at the gate.
Jiang Si didn’t care about public opinion, but if something
could be avoided, it was better to do so.
“Sister, what explanation do you seek by grabbing me?”
the veiled young lady asked gently.
The woman was taken aback, seemingly surprised that
someone she had offended wasn’t angry and was instead
so reasonable.
At that moment, her actions appeared even more crude
and discourteous in others’ eyes.
“I want to see Divine Woman Liu and take her to the
officials!”
“Why do you wish to take Divine Woman Liu to the
officials?”
When Jiang Si asked this, the woman immediately burst
into loud sobs: “She killed my child…”
Jiang Si patiently waited for the woman to explain her
child’s cause of death again before asking, “Sister, I
sympathize with your situation, but when did your child
pass away?”
The woman hesitated, using a sharp tone to cover her
sudden unease: “Last year, why?”
Jiang Si let out a soft sigh.
The capital’s citizens had their code of conduct when
watching spectacles—once the parties involved reached a
crucial point in their discussion, everyone would prick up
their ears to listen. No one spoke, so those nearby heard
the gentle sigh.
Why did this noble young lady of the Earl’s mansion sigh?
People’s curiosity was instantly aroused.
Jiang Si then continued, “Let me tell you, Sister—my
grandmother lost her sight several days ago, which is why
Second Madam invited Divine Woman Liu to perform
rituals. Divine Woman Liu expelled the evil spirits and said
my grandmother’s eyes would recover within three days.”
At this point, Jiang Si looked toward the crowd. “Everyone
has heard about this, right?”
“Of course we have! Who hasn’t heard about it?” the
crowd responded with laughter.
Jiang Si turned back to the woman, her tone growing
stern: “If your child died last year, why didn’t you take
Divine Woman Liu to the officials then? Why wait until
now?”
The woman’s eyes darted around as she wailed, “How
could Young Miss understand the hardships of common
folk? Divine Woman Liu, who comes at your beck and call,
was too powerful for people like us to challenge. Not only
did she refuse to admit to killing my child, but she also had
people drive our family out of the capital. Back then, we
had elderly and young to care for, and sick family
members—we’ve only just recovered enough to return…”
The woman’s crying immediately stirred sympathy among
the onlookers.
“I see,” Jiang Si nodded. “Then please wait just one more
day, Sister. Divine Woman Liu said my grandmother’s
eyes would recover within three days—tomorrow is the
final day.”
“But your mansion’s steward just said they wouldn’t
protect Divine Woman Liu!”
Jiang Si smiled faintly. “That’s correct. After tomorrow,
Divine Woman Liu will certainly leave the Earl’s mansion.
Then, Sister, you can either take her to the officials or
settle it privately—our mansion won’t interfere.”
“No!” The woman grew agitated. “What if she secretly
escapes after tomorrow? Where would I find her then? I
must take her to the officials now!”
Jiang Si slowly pulled her hand free from the woman’s
grasp. “Sister, your unwillingness to wait even one day
makes me wonder—could you have deliberately chosen
this moment to interfere with my grandmother’s
treatment?”
“How can Young Miss accuse me falsely? I just fear she’ll
escape.”
Jiang Si smiled and raised her voice to ask the crowd,
“Everyone, tell me, could Divine Woman Liu secretly leave
the Earl’s mansion after tomorrow?”
The crowd burst into laughter. “Of course not!”
The woman’s face paled as she looked at the crowd in
confusion.
Someone kindly explained, “Sister, don’t you know? We’ve
all placed bets on this! Whether the Old Madam’s eyes
recover or not, we all want to see what this supposedly
divine woman looks like. If the Old Madam’s eyes do
recover—well, win or lose, we want to see this miracle
worker. And if they don’t recover…” They chuckled
meaningfully. “Well, we’d be even more eager to see her
then!”
If Divine Woman Liu proved to be a true mystic, neither
winners nor losers of the bets would mind. But if she
turned out to be a fraud, those who lost money would be
looking to vent their anger with their fists.
“So rest assured, Sister. We’re watching every wall of this
mansion. Unless Divine Woman Liu can fly, she won’t
escape.”
The woman was dumbfounded.
When she received her instructions earlier, no one had
mentioned it would be this difficult.
“Now you understand, Sister? With so many vigilant
neighbors watching, Divine Woman Liu can’t escape.
Please wait one more day—don’t interfere with my
grandmother’s treatment, and our mansion will remember
your understanding.” At this point, Jiang Si gave the
woman a slight bow.
“Young Miss Jiang speaks truly—we guarantee Divine
Woman Liu won’t escape!” the crowd chimed in.
The woman couldn’t help but look toward the steward.
Sensing trouble, the steward began quietly backing away
to report the situation.
“Steward Wang, please bring some tea and refreshments
for this sister. She shows us understanding, so we should
show her the same courtesy,” Jiang Si said coolly.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 55: The Imminent Revelation
Jiang Si managed to delay the steward with a single
sentence as she strode into the manor.
The steward hurriedly instructed the doorkeeper to
prepare tea and refreshments for the woman before
rushing to catch up.
Jiang Zhan placed a hand on the steward’s shoulder.
“Why such haste?”
The steward, who had previously thought little of this
unremarkable Second Young Master, was now more
cautious due to how Jiang Si had recently disciplined Old
Woman Liu from the kitchen. “Second Master gave orders
to send Divine Lady Liu away, but Fourth Miss just
detained her. I need to report this to Second Master.”
Jiang Zhan glared at the steward in warning: “Mind your
words!”
Not long after Jiang Si walked inside, she encountered
Divine Lady Liu being escorted by a matron, with a young
maid carrying a small bundle behind them.
“Divine Lady, are you leaving?”
“Fourth Miss, I am departing from the Earl’s manor.”
Divine Lady Liu maintained a formal demeanor in front of
others.
Jiang Si frowned. “If I remember correctly, Grandmother
instructed Second Madam to host Divine Lady for three
days. It’s only the second day—why are you leaving so
soon?”
“Fourth Miss might not know, but this Divine Lady has a
murder case against her. How dare our manor harbor
such a person? Second Master said—”
“I was speaking with Divine Lady. Why does Matron Xiao
need to interject?”
Matron Xiao’s face flushed with embarrassment, but she
argued, “These are Second Master’s orders.”
Jiang Si gave her a cool look. “Is Matron Xiao suggesting
that Second Uncle now rules this manor?”
“Well—” Matron Xiao fell silent, though internally she
sneered.
Everyone knew the Earl’s manor would lose its title when it
passed to the Second Young Master’s generation. With
the Elder Young Master being so accomplished and the
Second Master paving the way at court, the Jiang family
would surely fall under the Second Branch’s control.
“Heh, if I can’t make decisions, does Si’er think she can?”
A neutral voice rang out as Second Master Jiang suddenly
appeared before Jiang Si.
The steward stood behind Second Master Jiang, having
reported to him while Jiang Si was speaking with Divine
Lady Liu.
Jiang Si curtsied slightly to Second Master Jiang. “Second
Uncle jests. I merely meant that regarding Grandmother’s
eye condition, such an important matter should be decided
by Grandmother herself.”
Second Master Jiang’s expression remained unreadable.
“Your Grandmother has already approved Divine Lady
Liu’s departure.”
Jiang Si immediately showed distress. “So Grandmother
agreed? Then I was too hasty in detaining Divine Lady Liu
—I was just concerned when I saw her leaving early.”
“You didn’t know before, so it’s fine. In the future, just play
with Li’er and the others, and don’t meddle in adult
matters.” Second Master Jiang glanced at Matron Xiao.
“Take her away now!”
Jiang Si stepped forward to block Matron Xiao’s path.
“Divine Lady still cannot leave now.”
“Si’er, don’t be willful!”
Jiang Si smiled. “How dare I be willful before Second
Uncle? It’s just that I’ve already promised the neighbors to
keep Divine Lady until tomorrow. If we send her away
now, won’t it make our Earl’s manor appear fickle?”
Second Master Jiang’s expression darkened.
Pretending not to notice, Jiang Si continued, “Moreover, if
we yield so easily to a common woman’s demands, others
will think our Earl’s manor is easily bullied, leading to more
trouble in the future…”
“Well said!” Jiang Ancheng strode over. “Second Brother,
since Si’er has already retained her, what’s one more
day?”
Second Master Jiang’s face turned black. “Elder Brother,
you agreed to let Divine Lady Liu leave at Compassionate
Heart Hall!”
“Times change, Brother. I think Si’er makes excellent
points.”
“Elder Brother!” Second Master Jiang looked shocked.
How could he say something so shameless?
Jiang Ancheng showed impatience. “It’s such a minor
matter. Si’er has already spoken—would you embarrass
her in front of outsiders? Young ladies aren’t like rough
boys; they’re sensitive. Besides, inviting Divine Lady was
your idea, and now dismissing her is also your idea. What
are you playing at?”
Second Master Jiang’s mouth twitched violently.
Inviting a spirit medium was certainly not his idea—it was
all that foolish woman’s doing!
“Fine, let her stay. She can go wherever she wants after
tomorrow. I’ll inform Mother right away.”
“Father, I’ll come with you,” Jiang Si said with a smile as
she caught up.
Jiang Zhan winked at Jiang Si and whispered, “Shouldn’t
you thank Second Brother for bringing reinforcements in
time?”
“I’ll make him an embroidered pouch later,” Jiang Si
replied, clearly in high spirits.
Second Master Jiang coldly watched the First Branch
family walking happily toward Compassionate Heart Hall.
After instructing the matron to escort Divine Lady Liu back
to the guest room, he hurried to catch up.
“These are my family’s secret eye-restoration pills. The
Old Madam should take one in the morning and evening
for seven days, and her eye condition should improve,”
said a middle-aged man with a goatee as he produced a
small white porcelain jar barely larger than a palm.
The head maid Afu took the jar.
“Old Madam, please don’t worry. Doctor Zhang is quite
renowned for treating eye conditions in the area. If your
daughter-in-law had known earlier, I would have invited
him sooner instead of being fooled by that spirit medium,”
Second Madam Xiao said apologetically.
Old Madam Feng nodded sternly.
Since Divine Lady Liu’s talismanic water had allegedly
caused deaths, whether true or false, she absolutely
couldn’t drink it anymore. As for this eye specialist
physician, they might as well try.
“Afu, fetch some water and help Old Madam take her
medicine,” Madam Xiao instructed.
“Wait.” Jiang Si walked in.
Madam Xiao frowned instinctively upon seeing Jiang Si.
Why was this troublesome girl interfering again?
Once Old Madam took the eye-restoration pills, the Divine
Lady Liu matter would be settled completely.
If Old Madam’s eyes improved, they’d credit the pills. If
not, it wouldn’t matter—after all, restoring sight to blind
eyes was extremely difficult.
Jiang Si approached Old Madam Feng. “Grandmother,
you can’t take these pills now.”
“Oh?” Old Madam Feng had transformed from her initial
volatility to suppressed calm after losing sight in one eye.
“Divine Lady Liu said your eyes would recover within three
days. If you take these pills now and there’s any conflict,
what if it affects your recovery?”
“Fourth Miss, Divine Lady Liu is a fraud. We can’t delay
Old Madam’s treatment because of her words.”
Jiang Si suddenly smiled. “Second Aunt, you invited
Divine Lady Liu.”
Madam Xiao faltered, then continued despite her
embarrassment, “At the time, we’d only heard of her
reputation. We didn’t know about the deaths she’d
caused.”
“Then can Second Aunt guarantee Doctor Zhang has no
similar incidents?”
“This is outrageous! If the young lady insists on such
accusations, I shall take my leave!”
“Doctor Zhang, please stay.” Madam Xiao hurriedly
detained him, then coldly addressed Jiang Si, “Fourth
Miss, Doctor Zhang is a renowned physician in the area.”
Jiang Si responded unflinchingly, “And Divine Lady Liu
was a renowned spirit medium.”
“Enough! If you want to argue, all of you get out!” Old
Madam snapped.
Jiang Si immediately resumed her docile manner.
“Grandmother, both Divine Lady Liu and Doctor Zhang
were invited by Second Aunt. Although someone came
seeking justice against Divine Lady Liu, your
granddaughter believes that given their reputations, both
Divine Lady Liu and Doctor Zhang must have special
abilities. To be safe, please wait just one more day. If
Divine Lady Liu’s ritual proves ineffective, taking Doctor
Zhang’s pills then won’t cause any delay.”
Old Madam Feng fell silent for a moment before nodding
quietly.
She could wait one more day.
Madam Xiao’s lips quivered with suppressed anger.
Since when had Jiang Si become so persuasive, even
convincing Old Madam to change her mind? But according
to what she’d learned from her sister-in-law, Divine Lady
Liu was just a fraudster—she didn’t believe a miracle
could happen in one more day.
The next day arrived swiftly. After news spread about
Divine Lady Liu’s alleged involvement in deaths, the
betting houses had set odds of ten to one against Old
Madam’s eyes recovering.
After much consideration, Afei secretly bet a few copper
strings that Old Madam wouldn’t recover.
This was his marriage savings accumulated over the
years. Though he wouldn’t earn much this way, it was
better than that girl losing everything.
As the sun moved westward toward sunset, countless
eyes waited expectantly outside East Peace Earl’s manor.
With darkness approaching, surely it was time for the
result to be revealed.

Restored Sight
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 56: Restored Sight
As darkness approached, it was time to personally “escort”
Divine Lady Liu out.
With no movement from Compassionate Heart Hall,
Second Madam Xiao’s heart finally settled as she led her
maids and matrons to Divine Lady Liu’s quarters.
“Divine Lady, shall we?”
The young maid glanced at Divine Lady Liu before silently
picking up the small bundle packed yesterday.
Divine Lady Liu drew a deep breath, struggling to
suppress her near-breakdown emotions.
She had truly boarded Fourth Miss Jiang’s pirate ship with
no way off.
Now the ship had capsized, and she was about to drown
in the ditch, except… her shipmate could swim!
Seeing Divine Lady Liu’s tense expression, Madam Xiao
laughed with satisfaction. “If Divine Lady wishes to stay for
dinner before leaving, that can be arranged.”
“No, that won’t be necessary…” Divine Lady Liu closed
her eyes briefly, her expression wooden as she walked
out.
Forget about whether the woman who lost her child would
drag her to the authorities—she was certain that once she
stepped outside the Earl’s manor gates, the spectators
would tear her apart.
Her reputation, her future—everything would be gone.
Divine Lady Liu walked step by step, her legs feeling like
thousand-pound weights.
Madam Xiao stopped, coldly watching Divine Lady Liu’s
dejected figure move toward the main gate.
The side entrance beside the main gate was already open,
and the doorkeeper looked at the approaching Divine Lady
Liu with contempt.
“Mind the steps, Divine Lady. Don’t trip.”
Divine Lady Liu faltered the doorkeeper’s words making
her face grow even paler.
“She’s coming out! She’s coming out!” The crowd outside
was a dark mass, their voices mixing with excitement as
Divine Lady Liu’s figure finally appeared.
“Did East Peace Earl’s Old Madam’s eyes recover or not?”
“Not—look at Divine Lady Liu’s funeral expression!”
“Ah, we expected this outcome. How boring—won’t even
make much money winning the bet.”
“Come on, think of it as free money. At least enough for a
meat dinner.”
“True, free money indeed.”
The sunset was fading, casting a soft orange glow across
the western sky. Divine Lady Liu stared at the darkness
before her outside the gate, lacking the courage to take
another step.
She was finished, truly finished!
“Pfft, nothing but a fraudulent con artist!” A woman holding
a child spat.
This curse seemed to ignite the crowd’s emotions, and
rotten eggs and vegetable leaves flew toward Divine Lady
Liu.
With a splat, Divine Lady Liu was hit by a rotten egg. As
the foul liquid ran down her cheek, she remained
unresponsive in her despair.
The doorkeeper, however, began to panic: “Stop throwing!
Stop throwing!”
He’d be the one cleaning up the mess in front of the Earl’s
manor.
“Quick, move along!” Seeing the instant layer of refuse
accumulating at the manor entrance, the doorkeeper
began shooing people away with a dark face.
“Divine Lady, let’s go.” The bundle-carrying maid was
nearly in tears.
By now, the maid was also covered in rotten vegetable
leaves.
“Go.” Divine Lady Liu forced out the word and moved
forward.
The woman in blue rushed forward and grabbed Divine
Lady Liu: “You fraud, give me back my child’s life!”
Divine Lady Liu remained expressionless, allowing the
woman to shake her repeatedly.
Head maid Afu came running urgently, shouting as she
ran: “Stop her! Don’t let her leave!”
This sudden shout energized the gossip-seeking crowd as
if they’d been injected with stimulants.
“What’s happening? Did the Old Madam’s eyes recover?”
“No way, could there be such a twist?”
In the blink of an eye, Afu caught up and urgently called to
the doorkeeper: “Don’t let Divine Lady Liu leave—Old
Madam’s eyes are bleeding!”
Hearing this, the doorkeeper immediately blocked Divine
Lady Liu: “You can’t leave. Our Old Madam’s eyes are
bleeding.”
“What?” Divine Lady Liu’s eyes flickered.
What was happening? The talismanic water she gave Old
Madam should have only cleared her digestive system—
how could it have such severe consequences?
“Seize her and take her to Compassionate Heart Hall to
await the masters’ judgment!” Afu gave Divine Lady Liu a
cold look as if already viewing her as dead.
Two matrons quickly flanked Divine Lady Liu and dragged
her inside.
In her stumbling journey, Divine Lady Liu brushed past
Jiang Si, who stood in Compassionate Heart Hall’s
courtyard.
Feeling doom approaching, Divine Lady Liu instinctively
looked at Jiang Si.
Jiang Si’s lips moved, silently forming a single word.
Her expression remained calm, the kind of calm that
suggested complete control, as if she were the victor.
Victor?
The despairing Divine Lady Liu suddenly shuddered, a
glimmer of clarity entering her eyes.
She had secretly made a deal with Fourth Miss Jiang—if
she failed, Fourth Miss Jiang’s plans would fail too.
So where did Fourth Miss Jiang’s confidence come from?
Perhaps the mind becomes sharper in desperate
situations. Divine Lady Liu vaguely grasped something
and frantically tried to decipher Jiang Si’s lip movement.
Just one word—what had Fourth Miss Jiang said to her?
“Divine Lady Liu, what exactly did you give Old Madam?
Confess immediately!”
Compassionate Heart Hall was in chaos, with the masters
of all branches crowded inside. Upon seeing Divine Lady
Liu, Second Master Jiang demanded harshly.
It was bad enough that his mother had lost sight in one
eye—if anything worse happened, he would be the first to
suffer.
According to the Great Zhou Dynasty’s unwritten rules,
officials must observe three years of mourning after a
parent’s death.
He was in his prime, at the crucial point of his career
advancement. Leaving officialdom for three years would
be a devastating blow to his career development.
“It was just talismanic water—” Under Second Master
Jiang’s imposing manner, Divine Lady Liu responded
instinctively, then suddenly froze mid-sentence.
Water!
That was the word Fourth Miss Jiang had mouthed to her
—”water”!
Divine Lady Liu quickly looked toward Old Madam Feng.
Blood-tinged fluid was seeping from Old Madam Feng’s
left eye, a terrifying sight.
Eye bleeding was different from bleeding elsewhere—
several maids holding soft clothes didn’t know what to do,
crying in their panic.
“Water!” Divine Lady Liu blurted out.
Everyone in the room turned to look at her.
At this point, Divine Lady Liu threw caution to the wind and
urgently said: “Quickly wash Old Madam’s eyes with cool
boiled water!”
“Enough! You’ve already harmed Old Madam to this state,
and you still want to cause more damage?” Madam Xiao
shouted severely.
“Afu, fetch water to wash Grandmother’s eyes.” Amid the
tense atmosphere, Jiang Si suddenly spoke.
“Fourth Miss, this is no time for your reckless commands!”
“Second Aunt, even if we don’t trust Divine Lady Liu,
Grandmother’s eyes need to be cleaned with water!” Jiang
Si glanced at Afu. “Afu, hurry—Grandmother is
uncomfortable with blood on her face.”
Afu hesitated briefly, then nodded and began cleaning Old
Madam Feng’s face with a soft cloth dampened with clean
water.
With master’s orders given, the maids steadied
themselves and worked systematically.
Basin after basin of bloodied water was carried out until
Old Madam Feng’s left eye finally stopped bleeding.
“Mother, how are you feeling?” Jiang Ancheng and the
others asked anxiously.
Old Madam Feng’s closed eyelids trembled, then slowly
opened.
After a moment of silence, she spoke shakily: “I think… I
can see with my left eye…”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 57: Striking It Rich
Could she see it again?
The room suddenly fell so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Old Madam Feng struggled to blink her eyelids. “Is that…
Fourth Miss?”
Jiang Si happened to be standing in a spot where Old
Madam Feng could see her at first glance.
The young lady smiled brightly and curtsied to Old Madam
Feng. “Congratulations on your recovery, Grandmother.”
She had originally been standing in the courtyard.
Although confident that Old Madam Feng’s eyes would
recover, she couldn’t help but feel uneasy without seeing it
for herself. So she took advantage of the chaos to
squeeze inside.
Already a strikingly beautiful girl, paired with a smile as
fresh as spring blossoms, she instantly brightened Old
Madam Feng’s still somewhat cloudy vision.
She could see! She really could see!
The room full of people awoke as if from a dream, all
rushing to congratulate Old Madam Feng.
Second Madam Xiao, caught in the middle, wore a joyful
smile on her face but inwardly felt like banging her head
against a wall.
It was over. This turn of events meant that Qian’er would
be permanently labeled as someone possessed by evil
spirits!
Jiang Qian was the wife of the Heir of Marquis Changxing,
a true noblewoman of high status. Having such a
reputation would surely bring her no end of trouble in the
future.
Old Madam Feng’s eyes brimmed with tears, overcome
with emotion.
Those who haven’t experienced darkness cannot
understand that maddening pain.
The Immortal Sister! That’s right, the Immortal Sister!
“Where is the Immortal Sister?” Old Madam Feng looked
around urgently, finally spotting Liu Xiangu in the corner.
Liu Xiangu was in a sorry state at the moment, with dried
rotten egg yolk still on her face.
Old Madam Feng was shocked: “How did the Immortal
Sister end up like this? Xiao-shi, is this how you’ve been
hosting the Immortal Sister on my behalf?”
Old Madam Feng’s words reminded everyone, and several
gazes fell on Liu Xiangu.
Whether Liu Xiangu had real abilities or not remained to
be seen, but putting on airs was certainly her forte. In an
extremely short time, she recovered from her shock and
resumed her usual demeanor, wearing a reserved smile
and the air of an otherworldly expert.
The three Jiang An Cheng brothers didn’t believe in such
things, and their main feelings at the moment were
surprise and confusion. However, the looks in the eyes of
Madam Xiao and the others instantly changed as they
gazed at Liu Xiangu.
The Old Madam’s eyes had indeed recovered within three
days, didn’t this prove that Liu Xiangu possessed divine
abilities?
By this point, no matter how complex Madam Xiao’s
feelings towards Liu Xiangu were, she didn’t dare to slight
her. She quickly put on a smile and approached her: “My
apologies for the offense, Immortal Sister. Please forgive
us.”
After speaking, she glared at a maidservant: “Hurry and
escort the Immortal Sister to bathe and change her
clothes.”
Old Madam Feng added: “Take good care of the Immortal
Sister, and don’t neglect her again.”
“This way, please, Immortal Sister,” several maidservants
curtsied to Liu Xiangu in unison.
Liu Xiangu walked out with her young attendant, feeling as
if she were walking on clouds.
Heavens, how did Fourth Miss Jiang know that Old
Madam Feng’s eyes would recover within three days?
Thinking back to how Jiang Si had preemptively sought
her out, clearly aware of Madam Xiao’s plan to harm
Second Young Master Jiang, and even knew her secret,
Liu Xiangu found Jiang Si increasingly unfathomable.
Could it be that Fourth Miss Jiang was truly someone who
could communicate with spirits and gods?
Liu Xiangu couldn’t help but glance in Jiang Si’s direction.
The young lady with a straight posture lowered her eyes,
looking obedient.
Liu Xiangu shuddered and quickly averted her gaze.
No more thinking about it. In the future, it would be best to
stay as far away from this otherworldly being as possible.
The future—as Liu Xiangu thought of these two words, a
smile involuntarily spread across her lips.
After this incident, she would be unrivaled in the capital,
truly achieving both fame and fortune. In the future,
everyone who saw her would respectfully address her as
Immortal Sister!
Liu Xiangu floated out of the room in high spirits, and a
momentary silence fell over those remaining inside.
Old Madam Feng’s eyes had recovered just like that, and
everyone still felt a sense of unreality.
“Why are you all standing there in a daze? Help me bathe
and change my clothes. Oh, and get a couple strings of
firecrackers to set off at the main gate, to drive away the
bad luck!” Old Madam Feng said jubilantly.
Outside the main gate of Duke East Peace’s mansion, the
dense crowd of onlookers had still not dispersed. At this
moment, people were discussing whether Old Madam
Feng’s life was in danger.
Suddenly, several servants walked out, placing several
trays of firecrackers wrapped in red paper. They were then
lit, crackling loudly.
The children in the crowd let out shrill screams, laughing
as they covered their ears with both hands.
The onlookers looked at each other in confusion.
Someone standing close by asked loudly: “Why is your
noble house setting off firecrackers?”
A servant from the Duke’s mansion smiled and replied:
“Our Old Madam’s eyes have recovered!”
What? Old Madam East Peace’s eyes had recovered.
The onlookers’ exclamations instantly drowned out the
sound of firecrackers, followed by a wailing cry: “It’s over,
it’s over, I’ve lost all my savings!”
Reminded by this outburst, the scene was suddenly filled
with mournful cries.
The sound was so loud that even Old Madam Feng, who
was bathing and changing clothes, could hear it. She felt a
pang in her heart: “What’s all that wailing about outside?”
A-Fu smiled and said: “It seems those people who placed
bets have suffered great losses.”
Old Madam Feng pondered for a moment, understanding
the situation, and sneered: “They deserve it!”
On this day, the entire capital was engulfed in a wave of
lamentations. Outside various gambling houses, people
were running around naked in madness, some banging
their heads against trees, and others preparing to choke
themselves to death by eating several steamed buns at
once.
A-Fei received the last batch of betting money, feeling an
urge to join the naked runners.
Two hundred and fifty taels, with odds of ten to one.
Heavens, how much money was that?
He, a nobody who lived like a rat in the corner, ignored by
all, now had bank notes worth over two thousand taels in
his possession?
Stay calm, stay calm. This huge sum wasn’t his; come to
think of it, he had even lost his savings.
A-Fei stumbled away from the gambling house as if drunk,
looking no different from those who had lost everything,
attracting no attention at all.
The long night finally passed, and Tianxiang Teahouse
was even more bustling than usual.
“Miss, A-Fei wouldn’t have run off with the huge sum,
would he?” A-Man asked, clutching her chest.
She couldn’t even bear to imagine such a possibility; the
mere thought made her heart ache.
Jiang Si sighed helplessly: “A-Man, you’ve asked this for
the sixth time now.”
“This servant is just worried, that’s all.”
It was over two thousand taels of silver, had the young
miss calculated it correctly?
As the mistress and servant entered the private room, A-
Fei came forward to greet them, clearly having waited for
some time.
A-Man let out a long sigh of relief.
This boy knew his place after all.
“Miss, here’s your money—” A-Fei’s hands trembled as he
took out an oil paper package from against his chest.
A-Man took it, opened it, and counted three times before
finally showing a smile: “Miss, it’s all here.”
Jiang Si raised her chin slightly.
A-Man understood and reluctantly took out a hundred-tael
banknote: “Here, as agreed.”
“How could I—” A-Fei quickly accepted the banknote.
“Give A-Fei another hundred taels.”
“Miss!”
Jiang Si raised an eyebrow.
A-Man deflated and took out another hundred-tael note.
This time, A-Fei didn’t accept it: “Miss, we agreed on a
hundred taels before…”
“At that time, the odds were five to one. You placed your
bet at a good moment, allowing me to earn much more.
This extra hundred taels is a bonus.”
“Then I won’t be polite.” A-Fei, having spent years in the
streets, had thick skin. Hearing Jiang Si’s explanation, he
happily reached for the banknote.
He tugged, but it didn’t move.
A-Fei glanced at A-Man and reminded her: “Sister A-Man,
you’re going to tear the banknote…”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 58: The Cycle of Natural Justice
After Afei left, Aman was still distressed and complained,
“We agreed on one hundred taels, but suddenly it became
two hundred. Even hens don’t lay eggs that quickly.”
Jiang Si reached out and tapped Aman’s forehead, saying,
“I never realized you were such a money-grubber before.”
Aman covered her forehead and pouted, thinking to
herself that her mistress didn’t have money before either,
so she couldn’t have been a money-grubber even if she
wanted to.
“Don’t focus so much on this. Money is important, but it’s
not the most important thing for us,” Jiang Si said.
She needed money to get things done, but what she
lacked were people to do the tasks. If she had any other
option, she wouldn’t have used a street ruffian like Afei,
whom she had never dealt with before.
Fortunately, she was lucky. Afei was quick-witted and not
so shallow-minded, making him somewhat useful.
“Give these two hundred taels to Diviner Liu to repay her,”
Jiang Si instructed.
“Won’t you be seeing Diviner Liu again, Miss?” Aman
asked.
“No, there’s no need to see her anymore.” Repaying the
debt meant they would owe each other nothing from now
on. It was time for Diviner Liu to face the consequences of
her evil deeds.
In her previous life, Diviner Liu had enjoyed prosperity for
a long time. Even when Jiang Si married Yu Jin and
returned to the capital, Liu was still thriving.
However, one day, the once-prosperous Diviner Liu was
hacked to death in her own home, and the murderer was
never caught.
Jiang Si happened to know who the killer was.
From the moment the title fell to Second Uncle’s family,
she began to suspect the incident when Second Aunt had
invited Diviner Liu to their home to perform an exorcism.
While asking Yu Jin to secretly investigate Second Uncle,
she also had him look into Diviner Liu’s background.
Many things, if investigated thoroughly without regard for
cost or time, often reveal unexpected truths.
The most disgusting of Diviner Liu’s deeds was using her
son disguised as a daughter to ruin the young ladies of
wealthy families. It was this very act that brought about her
demise.
Of course, the killer had nothing to do with the Yan family.
Diviner Liu’s unconscionable scheme wasn’t limited to the
Yan family. Some girls were strong-willed and didn’t insist
on marrying a poor boy because of those seven nights,
while some parents truly loved their daughters and
prevented them from making foolish decisions.
According to Yu Jin’s investigators, at least four or five
young ladies had suffered from the same strange illness
as Miss Yan.
Diviner Liu had been meticulous in her actions. All of these
young ladies were only children, living in different towns at
least a hundred li apart. The poor boy in their dreams,
supposedly staying with distant relatives, had a different
set of “relatives” each time.
Diviner Liu had cast a wide net at great expense.
Among them was Miss Dou, a beautiful girl adored by her
parents. She had a strong personality and, after being
victimized by Diviner Liu’s son, quickly figured out the truth
and hanged herself, leaving no explanation for her
parents.
Diviner Liu’s son’s disguise as a girl was flawless. How
could Miss Dou’s parents know that the person sleeping
with their daughter every night was a man? Faced with
their daughter’s death, they were completely baffled,
unable to fathom the reason.
Seeing that a death had occurred, Diviner Liu quickly fled.
Miss Dou had a fiancé, a childhood sweetheart who had
become a military officer stationed in Lin City. He had
been away suppressing a local rebellion with his
superiors. When he returned and learned of his fiancée’s
death, he nearly went mad.
Miss Dou’s parents could only cry helplessly in the face of
their would-be son-in-law’s questioning.
His fiancée’s death became an indelible pain for this man.
He couldn’t believe she would take her own life over
something trivial. There must have been something
unbearable that had happened to her.
The man turned his attention to Diviner Liu, who had
appeared at the Dou family’s home.
However, communication was difficult at that time, and
once Diviner Liu left, she vanished without a trace.
The families in different towns who had been victimized by
Diviner Liu, even if they had figured out the truth, had no
choice but to keep it tightly under wraps. They didn’t dare
mention Diviner Liu’s name to outsiders and were forced
to praise her abilities while swallowing their bitterness.
When victims actively cover up for their perpetrators, it
becomes nearly impossible for outsiders to uncover the
truth.
This went on for over a decade.
The man finally pieced together the truth through a
combination of guesswork and investigation. In a rage, he
castrated Diviner Liu’s son, then secretly infiltrated Diviner
Liu’s home in the capital and hacked her to death in the
night.
By the time those who had sought Diviner Liu’s services
sent people to look for her, the man had already left the
capital and returned to his fiancée’s hometown.
Such cases were the hardest to solve. Even if the
authorities tried to investigate those who had grudges
against Diviner Liu, they wouldn’t think to look back more
than a decade.
Moreover, Diviner Liu wasn’t from a noble family; she was
just a rural woman who had gained favor among the elite
through her reputation. Once she died, interest in her case
quickly waned, and it gradually became a cold case.
Yu Jin had been investigating Diviner Liu’s affairs at Jiang
Si’s request for a long time, which is why they were able to
track down this man and uncover so much.
The man’s fate left Jiang Si sighing for a long time.
After entrusting his parents to his brother’s care, the man
took his own life at his fiancée’s grave.
This incident caused quite a stir in the local area.
People said the man was too devoted, unable to bear the
thought of his fiancée even after more than a decade, and
finally decided to follow her.
No one connected this man’s death with the death of a
fortuneteller far away in the capital. Or perhaps, Diviner
Liu, who had appeared there over a decade ago, had
been completely forgotten, and news from the distant
capital couldn’t possibly reach this place.
Jiang Si still remembered how displeased Yu Jin looked
when she expressed admiration for the man’s unwavering
love for his fiancée.
She had given him a sidelong glance and said that such
men were rare in this world.
Yu Jin had retorted, “It took him over a decade to avenge
his fiancée. She probably got tired of waiting and had
already reincarnated. What’s there to admire about such a
slow-witted man?”
The couple had bantered for a while before putting the
matter to rest.
Before the appointed time with Diviner Liu, Jiang Si left
Aman behind and departed first.
When Diviner Liu arrived punctually and didn’t see Jiang
Si, she felt relieved. “I don’t need the money. I should
thank Fourth Miss for her help.”
“That won’t do. Our Miss said that repaying debts is a
heavenly principle. Please take it. Also, in the future, when
you see our Miss, just treat her as a stranger,” Aman
replied.
Diviner Liu was more than happy to comply. She took the
two hundred tael bank note and left, feeling pleased.
A few days later, a young man arrived in a small town
several hundred li away from the capital.
The man was in his early twenties, and fairly handsome,
but his gait betrayed a hint of frivolity.
Such a young man’s appearance in the small town didn’t
attract any attention.
The young man stopped in front of a tavern, rubbing his
chin and muttering, “Is this the tavern where the man Miss
mentioned often drinks?”
Just then, a patron was walking out of the tavern. The
young man quickly grabbed him and slipped him a few
copper coins. “Brother, is General Qin drinking inside?”
The patron pointed into the tavern and mumbled, “He’s
drinking in there right now.”
“Thanks,” the young man said as he entered the tavern.

The tavern in this small town was naturally not as refined
as those in the capital, but it was no less lively.
The young man who had just entered was none other than
A-Fei.
A-Fei entered the tavern, ordered some food and drink,
and sat down in a corner to drink while quietly searching
for his target.
On a bench by the window sat a man with his legs spread
wide, gulping down alcohol with only a small dish of
peanuts in front of him.
The man was drinking cheap wine.
A-Fei picked up his good wine and a newly served plate of
marinated donkey meat, walked over to the man’s table,
set down the food and drink, and smiled, “Drinking alone is
too dull. I think we’d get along well, brother. Shall we drink
together?”
The man glanced at A-Fei.
Judging by the bloodshot eyes and hazy gaze, A-Fei could
tell this man had already had quite a bit to drink.
“If you want to drink, let’s drink.” The man was
straightforward. Without hesitation, he raised his cup to
clink with A-Fei’s, drained it in one gulp, and then picked
up some donkey meat with his chopsticks.
The man chewed and swallowed the fragrant marinated
donkey meat, then slapped the table, “Excellent! It’s been
a long time since I’ve had their donkey meat.”
Once a ranked military officer, he had fallen into endless
grief when his fiancée suddenly took her own life and soon
lost his position. Now people still called him “General Qin,”
but it was merely out of habit, and some even with a hint
of mockery.
Not everyone admires a man’s undying love for his
fiancée. Often, such behavior touched women, while most
men would sneer at it.
To end up in such a state over a woman who hadn’t even
become his wife yet was considered pathetic.
The man and A-Fei clinked glasses repeatedly, and the
man devoured the heaping plate of donkey meat like a
whirlwind. Wiping his mouth, he stood up, “I’m full.
Thanks.”
Watching the man stagger towards the exit, A-Fei said
nothing. He sat for a moment longer, paid the bill, and
then followed him out.
“Why are you following me!” The man suddenly twisted A-
Fei’s arm and pinned him against the wall.
A-Fei winced in pain but didn’t cry out.
After experiencing the pain from A-Man’s hairpin, ordinary
pain seemed insignificant now.
“Who are you?” The man glared at A-Fei, his eyes
regaining clarity.
This young man didn’t look like the usual spineless ruffian.
Some people get drunk not because they’ve exceeded
their alcohol tolerance, but because they want to be drunk.
The man before him was such a case.
A-Fei looked straight at the man and suddenly smiled,
asking an odd question, “Can you read, brother?”
The man was taken aback but nodded.
A strange young man, a strange question. The man
vaguely felt that his life, which had been painful and numb
for over a decade, was about to change.
“That’s good.” A-Fei took a letter from his bosom and
handed it over.
The man looked at A-Fei, took the letter, and held it up to
the light to read.
Just one glance and the man’s expression changed
dramatically.
He read the letter, trembling all over, then grabbed A-Fei’s
collar, “Who exactly are you!”
A-Fei coughed a few times, “Brother, you’re about to
choke me.”
The man loosened his grip slightly, but his lips continued
to quiver.
Seeing the man’s expression, A-Fei felt a great fear rise
from the depths of his heart.
He did not doubt that this man was truly capable of killing!
Miss Jiang’s money wasn’t easy to earn.
A-Fei felt like crying but had no tears. He silently
comforted himself: I’ve already lost my savings, if I don’t
risk my life to earn some money now, what will I do in the
future?
“Speak, who exactly are you!”
A-Fei’s whole body was pressed against the wall, his back
cold and hard.
“I’m just a messenger.”
“Then what about this letter? Who wrote it?”
A-Fei shook his head, “I can’t say, and besides, apart from
counting money, I can’t read. But the person who wrote
the letter has a message for you.”
“What did they say?” The man started to become agitated,
“What did they say?”
The truth revealed in the letter was enough to drive a man
who had been searching for answers for over a decade.
“Cough, cough… She said… believe it or not, it’s up to
you. It’s been so many years, and she has no evidence. If
you want proof, you’ll have to pry open the mouths of the
key figures yourself…” After speaking, A-Fei nearly burst
into tears.
He felt that delivering such a message was tantamount to
seeking death.
But he really couldn’t read. Even if he had the guts to peek
at the letter, he wouldn’t have known what it said, let alone
understand what it was all about.
“Then why does she know?”
A-Fei rolled his eyes, “How would I know? If I were that
capable, I wouldn’t be the one running errands, right,
brother? She just said she’s not involved in this matter but
learned about it by chance.”
The man lowered his head and read the letter again, word
by word, several times. Suddenly, he stuffed the letter into
his mouth, chewed, and swallowed it.
A-Fei’s jaw dropped.
“Come with me!” The man grabbed A-Fei and dragged him
deeper into the alley.
The man’s home, though simple, was surprisingly clean.
“No matter what intentions the person behind you has,
since they sent you here, I suppose you’ll have to wait for
some kind of result before you leave, right?”
“Of course,” A-Fei replied without hesitation.
The man closed his eyes briefly, “Do as you please then. I
won’t provide meals.”
He pushed A-Fei aside and stumbled out, not even closing
the front door.
A-Fei sat for a moment, then got up, patting his backside.
This brother was straightforward. Of course, he would
leave; Miss Jiang had other tasks for him.
But how did Miss Jiang know this man wouldn’t harm him?
How could A-Fei know that a person who had been
obsessively investigating his fiancée’s death for over a
decade would, upon learning the truth, have no attention
to spare for others? His urgent desire would be to verify
what the letter said.
Even if he ultimately couldn’t pry open the mouths of the
victims or perpetrators, the detailed description in the letter
had already convinced him beyond doubt.
Immortal Sister Liu’s fate was sealed at this moment.
If you asked who had been the most prominent figure in
the past half month, eight out of ten people in the capital
would say it was Immortal Sister Liu, who had cured Old
Madam East Peace’s eye ailment.
Immortal Sister Liu’s invitations from noble households
were booked solid for the next month. She was truly riding
high.
On this day, it was time for her visit to the Marquis
Yongchang’s mansion.
The Marquis Yongchang’s mansion was right next door to
Duke East Peace’s, and the two families interacted
frequently. Miss Xie Qing’ao from the Marquis
Yongchang’s family was about the same age as Jiang Si,
and the two were close friends.
When the servant from the Marquis Yongchang’s mansion
came to invite Immortal Sister Liu, the gatekeepers at
Duke East Peace’s mansion could see what kind of
flowers the servant was wearing in her hair.
Being so close, any slight movement in one household
was quickly known to the other. So when the servant sent
by the Marquis Yongchang’s mansion ran back scared
witless, Duke East Peace’s household immediately
learned of the shocking news.
The divine Immortal Sister Liu had been hacked to death
in her bed, blood soaking the bed and floor. She was long
dead and cold!
Immortal Sister Liu, who had only enjoyed her fame for
half a month, had met such a violent end!
Hurried footsteps echoed in Haitang Residence as A-Man
rushed into the room, “Miss, something terrifying has
happened!”
Jiang Si looked at A-Man calmly, then suddenly smiled,
“What terrifying thing? Tell me about it.”
“Immortal Sister Liu has been murdered!”
“Is that so—” Jiang Si sighed softly, “How frightening
indeed.”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 60: The Neighbor’s Troubles
Aman nodded emphatically, “That’s right. They say her
intestines were strewn all over the floor. The maid sent by
Marquis Yongchang’s household to fetch her was so
frightened she wet herself. But, servant girl thinks this is
karmic retribution—”
At this point, Aman suddenly stopped, her almond-shaped
eyes widening.
“What is it?” Jiang Si raised an eyebrow.
Aman began to stutter, “M-Miss, you said the other day
that evil people will face heaven’s judgment. Could it be—”
“Hmm?”
Aman caught her breath and continued, “Could it be that
you had already seen the dark clouds over Diviner Liu’s
brow, foretelling her impending doom?”
“Ahem, ahem.” Jiang Si couldn’t help but cough.
A-Qiao hurriedly patted Jiang Si’s back and glared at
Aman, “What nonsense are you spouting? Our Miss isn’t
one of those fortune-tellers.”
Jiang Si didn’t mind and smiled, “No need for fortune-
telling. If you walk by the river often enough, your shoes
are bound to get wet. Do enough evil deeds, and even if
heaven doesn’t punish you, someone will.”
Aman sat on a small stool, chin in her hands, “I wonder
which hero did this good deed?”
“Alright, go do your work. Why are you telling Miss such
frightening things?” A-Qiao pulled Aman out.
Not long after, A-Qiao returned with a calling card in hand,
“Miss, this is from Miss Xie, the eldest daughter of Marquis
Yongchang’s household.”
Xie Qing’ao had visited Jiang Si twice since she fell ill after
being slighted at a banquet over a month ago and later
broke off her engagement with Duke An’s household. She
was one of Jiang Si’s few close friends.
Jiang Si smiled as she held the card.
Xie Qing’ao had a lively personality; she must be coming
to exchange gossip.
Jiang Si wrote a reply and handed it to A-Qiao to send out.
Marquis Yongchang’s residence was right next to Earl
Dongping’s, and before long, Xie Qing’ao arrived.
Xie Qing’ao, who was about the same age as Jiang Si,
had an apple-shaped face with dimples on both cheeks.
She smiled before speaking, “A-Si, I’m here.”
Jiang Si, already seated at the tea table, had prepared a
pot of clear tea and several plates of snacks.
Xie Qing’ao sat down opposite her without hesitation.
The young lady’s cheeks were slightly flushed, and her
eyes sparkled. Jiang Si knew this was a sign that her
friend had a belly full of words to say.
“Have some tea first to moisten your throat.” Jiang Si
pushed a cup of clear tea towards Xie Qing’ao.
Xie Qing’ao took a few sips and then lowered her voice
mysteriously, “Something terrifying happened today.”
“Pfft.” Aman, standing to the side, couldn’t help but laugh.
Xie Qing’ao looked at Aman, puzzled.
Aman quickly lowered her head, putting on an obedient
expression.
Knowing that Jiang Si’s maid wasn’t very clever, Xie
Qing’ao didn’t mind. She leaned forward, pressing her
hands on the table, “That Diviner Liu who came to your
house to perform exorcisms was killed last night!”
Seeing no reaction from Jiang Si, Xie Qing’ao gave her a
push, “Aren’t you surprised? Isn’t it scary? Come on, show
some reaction.”
“Surprising, scary!” Jiang Si nodded seriously.
Xie Qing’ao stared at Jiang Si for a while, then deflated,
“You’re always like this, even if you’re scared to death,
you’d still hold it in.”
When she was younger, she didn’t like Jiang Si, always
feeling that she wasn’t on the same level as Jiang Si, who
was always beautifully dressed and whose smile was
always just right.
One time, she pestered her brother to take her out to play,
but after sneaking out, her brother, who was at that
awkward age, ditched her.
Standing stupidly on the street corner with a candied haw
stick, she was surrounded by some naughty children who
pulled at her skirt and pigtails. It was Jiang Si who
commanded Aman, who was half a head taller than
children their age, to rescue her.
From that time on, she became attached to Jiang Si.
Her A-Si was as beautiful as a flower, cold on the outside
but warm-hearted, with more good qualities than she could
count on one hand. Much more reliable than her rascal of
a brother.
Jiang Si didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
If it were before, she did have too much pride.
Losing her mother at a young age and the fact that her
father’s title couldn’t be passed down to the next
generation had brought her many strange looks into this
circle. Whether it was sympathy and pity, or indifference
and contempt, neither was what she wanted.
She could only pretend not to care, to look down on it all,
as if only then she wouldn’t be looked down upon.
However, after experiencing those life-and-death
situations, she had grown up in an extremely short time
and had come to her senses.
“After all, I didn’t see it with my own eyes. To say I’m
afraid, well, I can’t say that,” Jiang Si said, picking up a
rose-shaped pastry and handing it over.
The pastry, shaped like a rose, looked exquisite. Xie
Qing’ao took a bite and sighed, “A-Qiao is a treasure.
These pastries are getting more and more delicious.”
After finishing a rose pastry, Xie Qing’ao wiped the
corners of her mouth and sighed, “Diviner Liu was so
capable that even my mother regarded her as a living
immortal. Who would have thought she’d die just like that.”
“Was it your mother who wanted to invite Diviner Liu to
your household?” Jiang Si asked.
Xie Qing’ao had no secrets from Jiang Si, so she naturally
had nothing to hide, “Yes, my mother didn’t breathe a
word about why she wanted to invite Diviner Liu. Today,
when she heard about Diviner Liu’s violent death, she sat
motionless for a long time and even shed tears. I couldn’t
help but come to ask you, was Diviner Liu really that
capable?”
“She was able to cure my grandmother’s eye ailment, so I
suppose Diviner Liu did have some real skills,” Jiang Si
said calmly.
She had promised Diviner Liu fame and fortune, and she
hadn’t gone back on her word. It was just that Diviner Liu
wasn’t destined to enjoy it.
Considering what Diviner Liu had done to those innocent
young ladies and her brother, her death was not to be
pitied. Jiang Si couldn’t muster any sympathy.
Moreover, given Diviner Liu’s current fame, if she wanted
to do evil, she could do great evil. So, by pushing Diviner
Liu to this point, Jiang Si’s sin would be great.
It could be said that from the moment she sent Aman to
find Diviner Liu, she had essentially given Diviner Liu a
push toward the netherworld.
“Then I’m even more worried,” Xie Qing’ao frowned in
distress. “My mother shed tears upon hearing of Diviner
Liu’s violent death, which shows she had high hopes for
whatever she was going to ask Diviner Liu. What difficult
situation could my mother be facing?”
What difficult situation had the Marchioness of Yongchang
encountered recently?
Jiang Si thought carefully.
In her previous life, at this time, her marriage had been
brought forward, and in the rush, she hadn’t paid much
attention to outside affairs. If there was something from
the Marquis Yongchang’s household that had spread to
the outside world, there was indeed one incident.
For some unknown reason, the Marquis of Yongchang
had ended up sleeping in a pigsty at a household on the
street. The family only discovered him early in the morning
when they heard the pigs squealing in irritation.
Naturally, the incident of the Marquis sleeping with pigs
instantly topped Beijing’s annual gossip chart, providing a
huge treat for gossip enthusiasts.
Apart from the embarrassment, the direct impact of this
incident was that the engagement talks between the
Marquis’s heir, Xie Yinlou, and a young lady’s family came
to an abrupt end.
After all, with a mentally unstable father, who knew if the
son might not also have a fit and go sleep with pigs?
Jiang Si remembered that Xie Yinlou, who could barely be
considered her childhood sweetheart, was still unmarried
the year she died.
“Generally speaking, if a woman encounters a difficult
problem, nine times out of ten it’s related to her husband,”
Jiang Si hinted carefully.
After all, it was her good friend’s elder, so she couldn’t
directly say that soon your father would be sleeping with
pigs, and then your brother’s almost settled engagement
would fall through.
Xie Qing’ao suddenly slapped the table, “Could it be that
my father is keeping a mistress outside!”
