COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course introduces students to the contemporary world by examining the
multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of the social
sciences, it examines the economic, social, political, technological, and other
transformations that have created an increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of
peoples and places around the globe. To this end, the course provides an overview of the
various debates in global governance, development, and sustainability. Beyond exposing the
student to the world outside the Philippines, it seeks to inculcate a sense of global
citizenship and global ethical responsibility.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Distinguish different interpretations of and approaches to globalization;
2. Describe the emergence of global economic, political, social, and cultural systems;
3. Analyze the various contemporary drivers of globalization;
4. Understand the issues confronting the nation-state;
5. Assess the effects of globalization on different social units and their responses.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
1. Attendance: Attend all scheduled classes. Three consecutive absences during the
preliminary period of the semester may result in automatic withdrawal from the
course by the instructor. NO SPECIAL quizzes or EXAMS shall be administered,
regardless of the reason for a student’s absence during scheduled assessments.
2. Timely Submission: Submit all required assignments and outputs by the specified
deadlines. No extensions will be granted once submission folders are closed.
3. Active Participation: Engage actively with both the instructor and fellow students to
enhance your learning experience.
4. Electronic Devices: Keep all electronic devices (e.g., phones, tablets) turned off
and stored away during class sessions.
5. Translation Applications: The use of translation applications during class is
discouraged to promote language development and comprehension.
GRADING
Students’ preliminary, midterm, and final marks will be derived from the following
metrics:
1. QUIZZES (25%)
Quizzes may take the form of written summative exams, performance
assessments, or output-based evaluations.
2. OUTPUTS (25%)
May include assignments, worksheets, and other assigned tasks
3. CLASSROOM ENGAGEMENT (20%)
Includes attendance, participation in recitations, and the instructor's overall
assessment of student engagement.
4. MAJOR EXAMINATIONS (30%)
Includes scores earned during the preliminary, midterm, and final exams.
