INTRODUCTION
These translations and transcriptions, of which the Nakatomi Ryū Shuriken No Densho as a text is a part of, were
produced in the interests of the American Federation of Jujutsu . Any party or person is free to avail themselves of a
copy of this text or any other found therein. It would be appreciated if you would acknowledge the AFJ in doing so.
Technical Information: The document is based upon an original 19th Century piece that was originally provided by
Bujutsu.Jp (no longer extant) and also certain examples that could be found in some of the Prefectural Library websites
(antique books and digital collections). Some of the examples that could be found in some of the Prefectural Library
websites were apparently an abridgment of some of the Makimono scrolls of the Densho itself. These kinds of
abridgments are quite common, they usually mean that the scroll had belonged to another ryūha school that used the
Shuriken-jutsu of the Nakatomi school. Some examples of this do not have a ryūha school name listed on the scroll.
Some Western sources seem to indicate a rather direct association between the Nakatomi Ryū and the Kukishin Ryū,
which, as a principle, in all fairness, does not seem to be reflected in any Japanese sources (at least none that we are
aware of). Most likely, it was caused by usage of the Nakatomi Ryū Shuriken-jutsu within some branches of the
Kukishin Ryū, as part of their own Shuriken-jutsu. That is our opinion on the subject, but personally, I don’t know.
Beyond these matters, the high relevance of Nakatomi Ryū Shuriken-jutsu should not be underestimated, it is one of
three (3) schools of shuriken-jutsu that are famous for their contributions to the element of shuriken-jutsu within the art
of Jujutsu itself. In Jujutsu, all shuriken-jutsu in any given school most likely came from one of these schools,
somewhere along the line. That would be most usual the case. That being the case, as part of the Library Collection of
Shihan Weymouth, it is rather an important piece. The text of the Nakatomi Ryū Shuriken No Densho as historical
document is dated about the 1820’s and as would be quite usual to these kind of 18th and 19th Century historical pieces,
a lot of it is written in what looks more like the Chinese language, and when it does use Kana script, tends to use only
Katagana script.
Many Western practitioners seem to be less familiar with the deeper intricacies of what actually constitutes the art of
Shuriken-jutsu, but that would be expected to change now, since we translated and placed the Shinkage Ryū Tsuki No
Sho which includes marvelous and lengthily descriptions of the intricacies of what actually constitutes the art of
Shuriken-jutsu and simply can’t be beat as a source of information, really. This example of a Shuriken-jutsu Densho is
then even further useful to get a closer look at the details of an actual school of the stuff. Between the two, and
whatever we may have provided in the future, as well as the writings of others… it should be much easier now to better
understand what fully constitutes the art of Shuriken-jutsu. I think some people will probably be quite surprised to
learn just how well developed the art of Shuriken-jutsu really is. But, one should guard against any tendency to assume
that it really doesn’t, itself, have that grander development and is at its core rather simple. Suffice to say that, despite
the seeming obviousness of it all (to the contrary), the art of Shuriken-jutsu has very little to do with “throwing stars”
and similar “throwing blades”. That is a grotesque miscomprehension of the subject, it’s really quite a bit more
involved than all that, really.
Here in the last word of the introduction, I hope to make it perfectly clear that only linguistics and legitimate academics
was applied in the course of rendering translation and the making of these transcriptions, hoping to remain true to the
original content and feel of the Kitō Ryū Hontai No Ben text itself. This was thought best, so as to provide a more
authentic experience that is devoid of 'stained glass' colourations which offers to obscure the text's content. I mean,

namely, that one ought not to approach such important works of translation, having a biased view caused by insistence
upon interpreting things according to one's own beliefs or martial arts experiences.

The previously mentioned Strikes of the Nine Planets (kuyō uchi) use just about
anything that was on hand one could use. That is how it should have been taught.
And one must never be negligent about the methods called "A Thousand Blows
Every Night (maiyo senda)". When one cannot use the strikes of the Seven
Luminaries (shichiyō), then one would be forced to resort to something else that
one had been taught. * The seal placed over this text was omitted. .

Tsuranete Tsuhō No Koto The Subject of Making Targets

Can be constructed from Bamboo, the tops of the bamboo have been whittled off and
notched, use thread cords that have been sealed at the end with fire to lash them
together. One draws the circle on it.

Wheat husks that have been shaped by putting them inside a bucket
make a good target.
Making one from straw is much the same.
They are easier on the blade of a sword too.

-- The post would be about six (6) or seven (7) inches from center to outside, this would be usual
for how one practices, so it can catch Shuriken throwing blades. The hanging cord-rope then has
plenty of space when constructed like this. There should not be other people present when you
practice as this would disturb your peace. Only the named part is the actual target, the whole
assembly was not intended to serve that way. If other people are present they could get injured by
mis-throwing the Shuriken blades, that is what these things were meant to be used for anyways!
There is what a man does not know about their usage, and the secrets that a man should not share
with other people about it. Do not let other people see the more advanced techniques that you
might have been taught. One ought to consider that the more advanced techniques were meant to
afford victory!

Even despite the Gods and the Buddhas, the Sun, Moon and Stars, all one's Masters and Instructors yet it is about to
unfurl. Disloyalty, Neglect of duty and Injustice will become a tool by which to strike against us.

instance, when to stop using it as an addition to medications because it makes them too harsh. When ingesting it
will and will not help heal flesh. .
TRANS NOTE: There is some suggestion here of coating the Shuriken with medical susbstances, to ill-effect the opponent. As well as
medications used to treat wounds he may have inflicted upon you. Kirin-ketsu is a Bright red resin used in medications, dyes and etc.

○ About the Green Onion as a foodstuff, when crushed they make a good liniment for the scab of a sword
gash when a person is incurable and dying from it, it also helps cover the bad smell.

コシヲヒ不用心ナリ黒キモノ闇夜ニ吉シ白キハアシヽ
○ When running out of options at the time [LIT. "...when cutting from the hip down..."], voicing out your
objection, pull up tight your white Tabi socks ["...recollect your composure..."] before you blacken them in
your carelessness. You will have better luck on such a moonless night at keeping them white if you do.

○ Quickly dull your blade on your straw sandals, you will find it more appropriate when using only one
bladed weapon. One could also paint the blade with a black ink-cake, which makes the blade harder to see,
especially on moonless nights. Casting mud on the whetstone [as you sharpen it] also has this effect.
○馬糞ノ干タルヲ以ヌリチフケハ早ク人油トレルナリ

○ One could also coat [the blade] with dried Horse's dung, or quickly spit it upon the blade when a man is
oiling his sword works well too.

○ Using a certain kind of yarn on the Hilt of the sword will absorb blood, which is one reason why shark
[hide] is used. Do not use ringlets of gold-copper alloy, when iron is by far more preferable. Using hemp
yarn strewn about it is appropriate, and there are Kuden Oral instructions about this.

不教不傳 余曰人五十日ハカリ正朝カ兵術稽古所ニ次宿シ南部大槻領

○ In the first volume of the Kuden Okugi No Maki Book of the Oral Traditions of the Secrets Level within
the Katori Ryū, it states that the Master Instructor Ishikake Nizaemon Genshō Asazaki around the time that
he had begun to receive instruction in the Shingen Ryū, but after having already received Hōka License in
the Kashima Musō Ryū school of swordsmanship. He also had been taught the secrets of the Imei
Ryū Naginata Halberd and Yari Spear in Tōbu, Japan. And so he was already a practitioner of the Western
Japanese forms of the Heihō Paramilitary arts. He had went travelling throughout the country even in his
elder years, and had taught the secrets methods of the Shuriken to men that he had happened to encounter.
Some of his students and senior students were rather uneducated and illiterate, and because of it could not
receive his entire teachings. It is said that there were men whom spent but 50 days and received legitimate
transmission in the practices of the Heijutsu Paramilitary arts. Afterwards, they remained residents in
Nanbu, in the Ootsuki region. Yamada Kandō in the vicinity of Junsuke(?).

There were four books written that recorded his oral teachings, as he had taught them. From these brought
together a single school was formed. During his childhood, he had become a student of Sensei Shinogu
Kan'emon, in Kadono Izu, from whom he had learned Shuri-Zayu-Ken "Using blades while Seated to the
Right" [variant of the word 'shuriken']. He also learned how to strike with needles from Sensei Hirokei
Sanjin Tatsuyama who taught him the Sanko Ryū. And from Sensei Ootsuki Gorōsuke Fujiwara Kiyotsugi,
he learned the entirety of Hitō Shuri [variant of the word 'shuriken' that uses tubes and blowguns] from
the Kentoku Ryū. Largely though, he eventually found all of this to be rather insufficient. That is when they
say that he came to meet with certain men of the various schools of Nakatomi, and then decided to make his
household there.

[people/soldiers] and among their Eight ranks/divisions, for instance. They say that merely using both eyes
is not sufficient for the occasion.

-- Kasumi Mist it can be made from grain husks wrapped in some old silk. The grain husks should have
been sifted beforehand, there doesn't have to be any apparent gap between the two sides. It doesn't really
have to be pinched off to prevent spreading or if it sprouts, but one could do so. It represents the opponent's
pupil into which to spit the needles. 100 spit in for practice guarantees a great mist will occur indeed. In the
teachings of the Sensei instructor there is the Subject of Dividing into Three Parts (sanbun no koto)
regarding the previously mentioned usage of a stone, as a Shuriken. One can enter 10 such stone into a
leather bag and then take grip upon it, and strike him. (Illustration here) This was a part of the
swordsmanship of Sensei Shinogu , it is shaped rather like a Dokko Single pronged vajra. In
the Shirokaun(?!) Sanko Ryū they use (Illustration here) and in the Dokko Ryū they use (Illustration here)
instead. They are pretty much about four inches long and about 100 practice strikes into Tatami mat tied
together as a target is used. They may practice striking as much as a thousand times. Afterwards, they
resume at a distance of some 12 feet away from the target. Sensei Ooki would put them into container tubes
made of bamboo cut lengthwise and covered with hide, and would throw them out of it striking as many as
10 times or sometimes only 5 or 6 times. They say that a man should be able to use any kind of target at all,
and so one bears that in mind. Leaping forward with blades, they say a man should have practiced a few
days before ever having tried it, bear in mind that many years will produce a number of cunning tactics to
use. One should accustom oneself to whatever one can take in hand (shuri) of blades (ken), arrows for
example. Flip it over to the fletched side [before throwing it] would be quite appropriate. And this is
something that can be done with an arrow even when one is running.

Taiken No Koto
The Subject of Physical Strengthening
When it has come down to it and one is already faced the opponent, ad he is attacking from the Hanmi Half
body position, even when in the presence of a hundred opponents, endeavor to cut them all down with
the Shuriken "sword in hand" and with your left hand grab at his [his] elbow. There is Kuden Oral instruction
here about not washing the sword at all. Much the same with the musket ball of a gun. Make it an objective
with the sword. When in the presence of the opponent and thrusts are being made, advancing by some four or
five feet with it to take full advantage of it and of what distance you do and do not take. There
is Kuden Oral instruction here.

-- Tsurugi Koshirae Yafu No Koto the Subject of Outfitting for the Sword. When the length of the sword
is but seven inches long, then every inch of the ground is upon death's ground itself. Much the same as if a
spear were only five or six inches long. [The weapon, you and the opponent] become something of a three
pointed triangle, it's much like how the wings of a hawk become worthless when it enters a hole, as if it had no
wings. Soon one entrails prove to be made of silk and of paper blowing on the wind. The hole through which
they do so, not unlike the eye of a wild boar. The force of a wild boar is quite strong, enough to disturb your
posturing. And quite comparable to such a fierce beast is the tactic of restricting the wings [of a hawk] whom
is returning from the open seas. But it was not a part of the older philosophies, and was not known to be
observed amongst the ancient peoples, as it was otherwise unknown to them. They say that it is an artificial
circumstance that one must know how to inflict. When [a blade is] cut down to a mere five, six or seven
inches long, then one ought to know that one can make use of the very spot where one stands.

When the number of swords present number 20, strikes will occur according to a ratio of five times that number
[e.g. 100 strikes are likely]. When 100 swords in a single night, they will have struck a thousand times, all

The previously mentioned subjects were originally kept quite secretive (jigoku hiji),
however, there is also the Okugi Shinun Shinden "True core traditions that are compiled
within the Secrets level". Now-a-days those whom receive the Sōden Transmission of
Inheritance mistake the thing, receiving it in groups of 40 men. Making themselves
miserable by the pursuit of carnal lust, instead of seeking the instruction on it, preferring
obscenity over it. This is not a proper way of receiving instruction for those whom are
young and inexperienced persons.

About Fukibari Spitting Needles, there is a certain cleverness used in approach to training with them, which
is done on the basis of practicing the techniques for a swift victory (shōjutsu). Rising to one knee from one's
seat to deliver a thousand blows (sayūken chi-uchi), striking while kneeling, it is to make use of Four items
from the strikes of the Seven Luminaries (shichiyō) [found in this densho]. Inclining some two feet forward,
striking at a distance of three feet to the front, that is how these four items are to be proceeded with. Again,
the placement of the strikes are toward the front at three feet, four feet and five feet away, the hand [doing the
throwing] will proceed from the crown of the head where it was raised to. One watches keenly the target and
the distance between oneself and the target, one fixes a certain grip by which to do it, bearing in mind the
distances of 12 feet and 18 feet as well. To begin, lay the white paper mat down on the ground before you,
make the strikes by issuance of the hand itself. Mr. Shinogu Kan'emon Kamitoo of the Tokko Ryū school
whom taught Izu the methods by which to practice it, he had stated that the curious thing about it all was the
people from infancy up always did use some form of this throw and handling method. One closes the distance
between you to some extent, using the ones that have no cord attached, issued from your hand a certain way.
About the ones that have a cord attached, they can be used and practiced with calmly as if they have no cord
attached as well. One ought to practice making strikes with the needles. Begin by using a spike first, and
practice making the strikes with that. About Fukibari spitting needles, they can of course be used to strike
with when held in the hand. Spitting them from the mouth could be used as a secondary method. Practice at
three paces from the target board and from five paces away from the target board. It is the same when using a

important secret methods.

One step in and stab with the needle can cause death in certain of these Kyūsho vital points. When wounding
him at the outer edge along Ryōago Both Jaw-lines, it can cause serious illness that ends in death.

cause death. But one might be able to resuscitate and revive a person from it.

○ The paper is layered and formed while wet by pulling it over [its mold], then allowed to air dry. It is formed of some 15
layers which have been wound about. The ends are then stitched tightly together with silk thread to help stop it from
unwinding. One then [drills] the hole where the fire will be introduced, and trim the hole where the chemicals [such as
gunpowder] are introduced. When making use of this Teppō Cannon gun, it is bound in place by wrapping a cord around it
in two revolutions to hold it up in place.
