“Grade 12 STEM Subjects”
Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,or most commonly known as STEM,
is a strand that is present as an option of learning in every Senior Highschool Division, alongside
ABM (Accountancy, Business and Management) and HUMSS (Humanities and Social
Sciences). This strand of studies that exists in the higher levels of education, like that of Grade
Level 12, contains multiple topics that pertains to sciences, technology and mathematics, all of
which deeply expands the knowledge of Grade 12 students about these branches of the
educational curriculum and prepares them for their chosen courses in college, and in extension,
their chosen careers in the future. The STEM strand features several subjects that is discussed
and studied by Grade 12 learners that would hopefully become useful in their academical
success. In this essay, we will cover the several subjects in Grade 12 STEM strand, both strand-
centric and core-centric, in order to obtain better understanding of what the STEM strand has in
store for its students.
First, we will discuss the specialized subjects exclusive only to Grade 12 STEM students. In
their first semester, they have STEM 5, STEM 7 and APP 2. Let’s start with STEM 5. STEM 5
is a subject that focuses on Physics and introduces the students to its basics and terminology.
Along Physics, there is Robotics as both of them are under STEM 5. Robotics contains the
lessons about how to operate and code an Arduino board and how it can be applied in the
student’s daily lives. Then, there is STEM 7 which refers to Chemistry. Chemistry is a subject
that teaches its learners about the fundamentals of matter and the behavior of atoms and
electrons. Finally, we have APP 2 which is Practical Research, a subject that prepares the
students for their final requirements for their graduation: research. All these subjects are present
and exclusive only for STEM learners as their chosen strand requires different academic needs
from other strands.
On the other hand, we have all the core subjects. The core subjects are subjects that are not
only present in the STEM strand, but includes ABM and HUMSS as well. Core subjects aim to
teach the other essential and basic topics that are not within the circle of exclusive subjects in the
STEM strand. Such core subject are Soc Sci 1, HUM 1, APP 6, APP 1, CLVE and HUM 2.
Social Sciences discusses the social development and growth of adolescents, HUM 1
emphasizes the 21st Century Literature of the Philippines, APP 6 focuses on teaching students
Entrepreneurship, APP 1 aims to help Grade 12 learners improve in their academic and
professional English, CLVE strives to enhance the learner’s relationship with God and expand
their knowledge of their religion and finally, Hum 2 works to expose the learners to the various
contemporary arts here in the Philippines. All these subjects combined improve the intelligence
of our learners, allowing them to be a more knowledgeable individuals who are able to use
his/her understandings and learnings to help themselves in achieving their goals and changing
their world.
In conclusion, the STEM subjects of Grade 12 learners not only prepare and teach the
learners, but also ignite their deepest core in showing what they are capable of. It is an essential
tool that becomes useful in their academic and career endeavors. Studying these subjects is a
vital process as it would eventually be the bridge to the success of the learners.
