History
William G. Morgan, the physical director of the Holyoke,pw Massachusetts-based Young Men's Christian
Association (YMCA), created volleyball in 1895. It was made to be an indoor activity for businesspeople
who thought the new game of basketball was too physically demanding.
The first set of rules were drafted by Morgan and published in the first edition of the Official Handbook
of the Athletic League of the Young Men's Christian Associations of North America under the name
"mintonette," until a professor from Springfield College in Massachusetts pointed out the volleying
nature of play and proposed the name "volleyball" (1897). The game was soon found to have
widespread appeal for both sexes in American schools, playgrounds, the armed forces, and other
organizations. As a result, it was later exported to other nations.
Nature
Volleyball is a sport in which two teams, typically with six players each, use their hands to hit a ball back
and forth over a high net in an effort to get it inside their opponent's playing area before returning it. In
order to avoid this, a player from the opposing team bats the ball up and toward a teammate before it
touches the court. That teammate can then volley it back across the net or bat it to a third teammate
who volleys it across the net. A team can only touch the ball three times before it must be returned over
the net.

*William G. Morgan. invented Volleyball in 1895.
*Maryland 1911. YMCA employees get to grips. with the new game.
Origin
In the dusty, outdated YMCA gymnasium in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where the visionary William G.
Morgan created the sport in 1895, volleyball has come a long way. Two centuries have begun there, as
well as a new millennium.
People involved
In a match, each team has six players, with three of them lining up in a row near the goal and facing it,
while the other three occupy the back court. (The libero, a position that was first used in the 2000
Summer Olympics, is an exception to this rotation; see below.)

The Creation Of Voleyball
William G. Morgana YMCA physical education director created a new game originally known as
Mintonette. The game took some of characteristics from tennis and handball. It was designed for middle
age men of the YMCA, while still requiring a bit of athletic effort.During a demonstration game,
someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the
net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport.
