I am applying for PhD in Chemistry at Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil out of my borne
interest to improve on my leadership, academia and analytical skills in solving environmental issues
arising in my community and the world at large. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and
also have a master of science degree in analytical chemistry from Nigeria and have since my graduation
worked as Quality control/Research Chemist with two paint and chemical industries in Nigeria. This PhD
research program will enable me to become a critical and independent thinker capable of formulating
research questions and to be an effective communicator in disseminating my research ideas and result
to the scientific community and general public. It will help me build on the research experience
accumulated during my master’s degree as I expect to contribute to design and evaluation of study goals
and procedures, data analysis and data interpretation and manuscript writing in order to earn
authorship of articles. I look forward to be equipped for careers in research and teaching through this
PhD program and enjoy support of fellow lab members in the research, celebration of individuals and
group accomplishments to promote collaborative research. My interest is also to enjoy a collegial and
productive work environment where students have access to key equipment, tools, assistance and
consultation to complete a proposed research work. Brazil is a country of interest because it is home to
prestigious universities known for their research output and academic excellence particularly in fields
such as engineering, environmental science biology and sustainability with diverse ecosystems such as
Amazon rainforest and Pantanal wetlands. . It is known for affordable education and relatively low cost
of living, rich in cultural heritage and provides opportunity to learn Portuguese, a language spoken by
millions globally, enhancing students’ linguistic skills and cultural awareness. My Professional
expectations is to be provided with opportunities to publish research, present my work and apply
patents and copyright. To attend colloquia, seminars and workshops to support my professional
development. To work effectively towards completion of my degree in a timely manner. To learn
existing theories, practices and research methods of the discipline and apply these into my research and
teachings. To discover and pursue a unique topic of research in order to construct new knowledge to
existing problems and issues. To also communicate regularly with faculty advisors. To assume the
highest integrity and maintain ethical standards in all aspects of my project work especially in the aspect
of collecting, analyzing and presentation of data. And finally to contribute wherever possible, to the
scholarly discourse of my discipline through presentations, publications and professional engagement
and service. I intend to return back to my country Nigeria with the skills and knowledge acquired during
this study to impact upcoming research students as a Lecturer and also work towards becoming a
professor in the field. I want to support students into technology careers and in regards to my actual
research area, I want to make data and their contexts more available. As we move towards an age
where data are collected in real time at higher quality with more granular time-steps and make them
more accessible to research disciplines. I am very passionate about making a difference and once I have
my PhD I will have the standing to be able to do so. My training in critical thinking and innovation in
science will also be useful. I will use my voice to advocate for policies and intiatives that can benefit my
environment and country as a whole.
