About the pattern.
Having discovered tapestry crochet less than a year ago, I fell in love its easy and versatility! I always
spend the short cold days of winter waiting patiently for spring and wanted to challenge myself this
year…. so decided to try my hand at designing something!
So there it is – my first pattern - a Spring blossom design!
The #wildjasminesquare has found its fate as a blanket - but the possibilities are endless with this
pretty square – scarf, cardigan, shawl, poncho, tablemat, placemat, coaster, rug or dishcloth even!
What you need to know:
The pattern is written is US Crochet terms
Stitches used:
For Square: double crochet, chain stitch, slip stitch,
For border: double crochet, single crochet, back post double crochet, slip stitch
Crochet techniques: Tapestry crochet - colour changing
Skill level: Confident beginner/intermediate
Gauge& tension: Not important but crochet a bit tighter so that pattern shows up better and yarn
doesn’t peek through (explained more under ‘tapestry technique’)
Abbreviations used:
dc - double crochet
ch – chain stitch(es)
Ch sp – Chain space
ss – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
bpdc – back post double crochet
yoh – yarn over hook
rs – right side
ws – wrong side
MC – Colour A/ Main colour
CC – Colour B/Contrast colour

Materials needed:
Yarn – anything will work albeit not too fluffy
Hook
Depends on yarn weight.
Rule of thumb – go one hook size down from what is recommended for the yarn (so
if a size 4mm is recommended, use a 3.5mm)
Thinner/lighter yarns may need an even smaller hook (i.e: go down 2 hook sizes)
Darning needle
For my Wild Jasmine Blanket, I used:
Yarn : Stylecraft Special DK in Mushroom & Grape
Amount: To make a lap blanket (100cm x 120cm approx.) = 30 squares
Main Colour: Mushroom - 5 x 100g (8 squares per 100g)
Contrast Colour: Grape - 3 x 100g (12 squares per 100g)
Main part of blanket uses 4 balls of Main Colour and 3 balls of contrast colour.
Border uses approximately 150 metres of each colour
Hook: 3.5mm/size E
(If you wanted to use Aran weight yarn + bigger hook – your squares will be bigger and you
can make less of them to achieve your blanket size)
Few examples I tried:
Fingering/Sock yarn + 2.5mm hook = 14cm x14cm square
DK yarn + 3.5mm hook = 19cm x 19cm square
Aran yarn + 4.5mm hook = 22cm x 22cm Square

The pattern
The abbreviations mentioned above will be used throughout the pattern
Each square is worked in the round so you always work with the right side (rs) facing you.
There are 8 rounds to each square.
Each round starts with a Ch3 (which counts as 1 dc) in the middle of the first side of the
square (side 1), worked around (4 corners and 3 full sides) and completes with a slip stitch
(ss) at the top of the Ch3 to end side 1.
Some rounds will start in a different colour from the last row – do check that you have
finished with the correct colour. This will be mentioned at the end of each round
Colour swaps will be mentioned in the first few rounds as ‘Change to MC or CC…’ before the
next stitch is mentioned. After this, due to multiple colour swaps, I will abbreviate to ‘MC’ or
‘CC’ more often.
o Eg: This means you should be ready with that MC on your hook before working a
section that starts ‘MC: 1dc…’
o Please read ahead to anticipate colour swaps.
See tapestry technique below if you are new to tapestry crochet.
From Round 2, the pattern will be written a table format:
Beg side 1:
Corner:
Side:
End of side 1:
The ‘Stitch count’ at the end of each round includes the 2 dc worked in the 2ch space of the
previous round.
Tapestry crochet technique:
Tapestry crochet is worked with more than one colour yarn throughout the project without
fastening off either yarn. The yarn is carried through the project until the end.
The pattern starts with the MC and the CC joins in Round 2. The colour change may be straight after
the beginning Ch3 or in the middle of the row – i.e: from one dc to the next.

Changing colour at beginning Ch3:
Work the first 2 ch the stated yarn colour (MC) and then
complete the last ch (of the Ch3) in the next colour (CC) and
you’re ready for your next stitch.
(It can be a bit fiddly holding all the yarn but with some practice,
it gets easier)
Changing colour from MC to CC (or vice versa):
1. MC: yoh
2. Insert hook through next stitch, yoh
3. Pull through 3 loops on hook
4. MC: yoh, pull through 2 loops 2 loops on hook
5. Drop MC and pick CC
6. CC: yoh, pull through 2 remaining loops 1 loop on hook in CC
7. Ready to do next stitch in CC

What do I do when I’m not using a colour?
When you switch colours, do not cut the first yarn. Instead, when working in the second colour yarn,
you will crochet over the first yarn and carry it along whilst you are working with the second yarn.
When you need to switch colours again to the first colour, give the yarn a gentle tug – this helps
ensure you haven’t accumulated some slack that makes the yarn peek through. Make sure you don’t
pull too tight or it will distort your work.
At the end of the row, carry the yarn up when doing the ss in the top of Ch3 so it ends up at the right
level to be worked with.

Chart represents a quarter/one side of the square with the corner stitches for 1 side
At the end of the corner stitches, Ch2 then the pattern repeats.
The 2 white spaces between the ‘SIDE’ and the ‘CORNER’ for clarity. The white
rectangles are not stitches. The ‘CORNER’ 2 dc shown on the chart are the

previous row.
Making the blanket
Final blanket size: Approximately 100cm x 120cm/40”x 47” – perfect as a lap blanket
Method:
Make 30 squares - the blanket will be 5 squares x 6 squares.
Block your squares to ensure they are all the same size – makes for easier joining.
Join the squares together making sure the edge of the motif joins up uniformly at the
edges/corners.
Add the border.
Sew in all ends

Joining:
I chose to join the squares with a whip stitch as I love the seamless look. This involves
stitching the corresponding stitches of 2 squares being joined with a darning needle + yarn.
It doesn’t really matter if you stitch on the RS or WS – I found the effects to be similar.
Joining a corner:
Needle goes from underneath into the ch2
space – pull yarn through the stitch. Insert
needle in the Ch2 space of 2nd square and pull
through.
Yarn always comes out of the side facing you.
Joining sides:
Insert needle underneath the stitch of one
square, pull through then insert the into the
corresponding stitch of the 2nd square and pull
through.
Note pattern created by the whip stitch
Check you are stitching in the same stitch of
each square so the motif matches well.
When you have done a few stitches, pull on
the yarn to tighten the stitching.
This should create a seamless finish and if
matched correctly, the motif will start to
grow

Border:
Instructions for the border use MC and CC only. I decided to add some green to Row 3 as for
contrast – feel free to play around with colours.
Row 1: With CC - Ch3 in any stitch (counts as a st),
dc all around – 2dc, ch2, 2dc in each corner. End
with a ss in the 3rd stitch of Ch3. Do not fasten off if
using for row 3.
Row 2: With MC – Ch3, Bpdc into every stitch all
around – 2dc, ch2, 2dc in each corner. End with a ss
in the 3rd stitch of Ch3.
Row 3: With CC – Ch1, sc in the same stitch and all
around – 3sc in each corner space. End with a ss in
first sc.
Row 4: ch3, *skip one sc, ss in the next sc, ch3*.
Repeat from *to* all around.
Corner = ss, ch3, ss in each of the 3 sc
Cut yarn and fasten off ends.
