In english and trench

* Hails from a family of distinguished intellectuals

*Best known works – Ancient Ballets, Legends of Hindustan

INTRODUCTION:

The poem ‘our casuarina tree” is from Dutt’s ancient ballets and legends of Hindustan. In
this poem, she describes a huge tree in the garden which symbolises her happy childhood
associations

“ Our Casuarina Tree-Toru Dutt”

MAJESTIC APPEARANCE OF THE TREE:

The tree is tall and strong. A creeper winds the tree like a python. The tree galantly stands
like a giant, wearing the colourful flowers of the creeper like a scarf

“But galantly the creeper wears a scarf”

LIVE ON THE TREE:

All day birds and bees gathered the tree and the garden overflows with a sweet song. A gray
baboon sits like a statue watching the sunrise. his puny offspring leaps and plays. Kokilas
hails the day. The sleepy cows went to pastures. The water lilies are enmassed in the pond.

“A gray baboon sits statue-like alone

Watching the sunrise”

NOSTALGIC MEMORIES:
The poet feels that the tree is dear to her not for its majestic appearance but for the
nostalgic memories that it brings to her.

“O sweet companions, for your sake,

Shall the tree be ever dear. “

NATURE’S COMMUNICATION:

The poet could communicate with the tree even when she was in a far-off land, as she
could hear the tree lament in her absence.

“what is that dirge-like murmur that I hear”

THE POET CONSECRATES THE TREE:

The poet consecrates the tree’s memories to the loved ones who are not alive. She
mortalises the tree through her poem like the poet william Wordsworth who sanctified the
yew tree of Borrowdale.

“ Therefore I fain would consecrate a lay

Unto thy honor”

LOVE TO DEFEND THE TREE FROM OBLIVION’S CURSE:

The poot expresses her wish, that the tree should be remembered out of love and not just
because it could not be forgotten. The poet seeks the love, support to preserve the tree
from the afflection of time.

“May love defend the tree from oblivion’s curse”

CONCLUSION :

The casuarina tree is blent with nostalgic memories of the poet. The poet in an attempt to
preserve her nostalgic memories consecarates the casuarina tree and thus pens the poem
“Our casuarina Tree” in fond memory of her loved ones.
Moral: Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal
