Short Story: The Time Traveler’s Gift
Ethan Blackwood had always felt like an outsider in his own time. A historian by profession, he had
spent years studying the past, but nothing compared to actually witnessing it. When he discovered
his grandfather’s secret—a time-traveling device hidden in the attic—he knew he had to use it.
The machine was old, its dials covered in dust, but with a few tweaks, it came to life. Ethan set the
coordinates to 1924 and stepped inside. The air crackled around him as he was thrown into a swirl of
colors, landing in a bustling city square. The newspaper boy’s voice echoed through the streets:
“Extra! Extra! Read all about it!”
Ethan clutched a yellowed letter in his hand, a note from his grandfather, written but never
delivered. His mission was clear: find the recipient, a woman named Eleanor Hartley. He followed the
address and found a small café where she worked.
As he handed her the letter, her eyes filled with tears. “This… this is from my father,” she whispered.
“But he passed away before he could send it.”
Ethan realized that some moments in time weren’t meant to be changed—but they could be
understood. With a newfound appreciation for history and destiny, he stepped back into the time
machine, knowing that his journey had only just begun.
