A spruce timber beam with a rectangular cross-section of 10 cm x 20 cm and a length of 3 meters is


subjected to a concentrated load of 5000N. The modulus of elasticity is (E) for spruce: 11 GPa (11 x
109 N/m2), and the allowable deflection is 10 mm.

Using the provided dimensions and information, calculate the deflection of the timber beam when
subjected to a concentrated load. Consider the beam to be simply supported at both ends.

1) Answer the below questions regarding the data analysis.


(a) Calculate the moment of inertia (I) for the timber beam.
(b) Determine the maximum bending stress (σ) induced in the beam.
(c) Calculate the deflection (δ) of the beam under the applied load.
(d) Compare the design calculated deflection with the allowable deflection and
determine if the beam meets the design criteria.

2) Calculate the cost of the beam supply and installation. For installing five timber beams of 10 cm x
20 cm x 3 m. The price of the linear meter is $165, and the labour work is $85/H. each beam
shall take two hours installation.

3) Identify any potential risks, using the risk matrix to conduct a risk assessment and the control
measures within the structure’s lifecycle.

Occasion 2 case study: Timber Wall


Frame Design

4) For one story house, the information on the construction of the timber wall frame is shown
below in Figure 1.

a) Draw the internal timber members, including the common studs, jack studs,
noggings, windowsill & head, and door’s head.
b) Define the quantities (Linear meter of the timber wall frame including all the
members).

 The size of all the members is 45mm x 90mm.


 The distance between the studs is 400mm c/c.

5) The construction duration for the carpenter to complete the timber structure of the entire
house will be 16 weeks (8h/day). Please find the below:

a) Calculate the total cost of the timber structure materials of the house
considering that.

 The labour cost is $120 / hour for a qualified carpenter (from Monday to
Saturday).
 Consider the working rate on Saturday is 1.5 the normal weekdays.

b) Calculate the floor area if the dimensions are 1590mm x 1450mm.


c) If the house has four walls like in Figure 1. What could be the volume if the roof
is flat?
