Inspection Results & Comments
Introduction:
Inspection of the new hot-dip galvanized steel structure products has been carried-out at Libyana
warehouse on 23-26/12/2018 as part of Third Party Inspection to assess the quality of the delivered
material in compliance with specifications & requirements outlined in ISO-1461and ASTM-A123.
-Random sampling specimens were taken from each article lot for inspection, see the summary.
Note: All contents of this report are based on materials found in warehouse during the time of inspection.
Extent of Inspection:
Visual inspection, UT ultrasonic thickness measurement, galvanizing layer thickness measurement.
Welding inspection was limited to visual inspection only (other Non Destructive Testing NDT techniques
can not be performed; these tests are usually performed before galvanization).
Inspection Findings:
- Unsatisfactory steel fabrication and welding was noticed. Moreover, welding joints were inspected
visually and defects were observed. Refer to the summary below.
- Poor quality galvanization applied on the vicinity of steel products.
- Flanges do not meet the code requirements. The existing flanges were fabricated from sheet metal. Steel
flanges should be of standard forged type as per ASME B16.5
- Surface finish on some products was found in bad condition.
- Slight spot mechanical damages of galvanizing layer on some parts.
- Hot-dip galvanizing several defects were noted.
Conclusion & Recommendation
Based on the inspection results, and the limited documentation provided, the following can be concluded:
- 18m stub tower main part no. HW-52235660-RT18B1-L1A/B/C/D/E-HF, quantity 90 pcs are rejected
conditionally and repairs must be performed.
- All other parts were inspected as directed by specifications and the minimum requirements have been met
(accepted)
- Repairs of galvanizing shall be in accordance with ASTM Standard A780, using zinc-rich paint.
- Welding repairs shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code-Steel.
- Acceptable dimensional tolerances shall be determined from ASTM A6.
Note: The results above mentioned are limited and in order to perform a complete assessment and issue a Final
Inspection Report (Release Note) we will need to review complementary documentation from the manufacturer.
