CURRICULUM MAPPING
Curriculum mapping is a process or procedure that follows the curriculum designing.
This process was introduced by Heidi Hayes Jacobs. This approach is an ongoing
approach or work in progress to make sure that all topics are covered and there is no
overlapping or redundancies in terms of competencies covered from lower subject level
to higher subject level. It also means that it is not a one-time initiative which involves the
teacher and other stakeholders.
Some curricularist define curriculum mapping as the roadmap to teaching or a map to
success.
Some question that teacher ask:
1. What do my students learn?
2. What are they studying in the school throughout the year?
3. Do my co-teachers who handle the same subjects covered the same content, do
they also achieve the same outcomes?
4. How do I help my students understand the connections between my subjects and
other subjects within the school year?
All these questions will be answered by doing curriculum mapping.
Curriculum mapping is the process of aligning resources, activities, instruction,
assessments, and educational reforms with a program. It is referred to as
"diagramming" or "indexing" a curriculum to rectify the redundancies, gaps, and
misalignments in the course content. It is further defined as the alignment of learning
and teaching standards, which show how successfully and to what extent a school or
instructor has matched the course material presented to students with the academic
expectations and the established learning standards.
By building on the content from one year to the next, curriculum mapping can be done
across a four- to six-year period. To provide learners with a thorough and well-rounded
educational experience, it primarily follows a time-progressive and logical order. These
maps are generally used by educators to compare their existing curriculum with the
current national standards. Following the comparison, they evaluate their work and, if
necessary, improve their standards.
