Bullying
Bullying has been around for so many years, so what is bullying? What are the different
types of bullying? What is the affect of bullying on people? How can we work on making our
environment a better place for future generations and ourselves? In this article, I will be talking
about all of the concerns listed above.
What is bullying?
Bullying is when one or a group of people use harsh words towards other people,
continuously and intentionally. Bullying, in many cases makes people doubt themselves and
lower their self esteem. It has many effects, going from mental to physical health which affects
one’s wellbeing. While there are many effects of bullying, the most part affected will be mental
health in many cases. It can also lead to depression, anxiety, loneliness and much more life
threatening situations.
What are the different types of bullying?
There are 4 main types of bullying: physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying,
and cyber bullying. Physical bullying has to do with the physical aspect, e.g. face, legs,
arms…etc. Examples of physical bullying is when someone kicks another person, slaps them,
pinches them and the list goes on. Verbal bullying is associated with words, to clarify, when
someone insults, threatens, even teases another person. Social bullying has effect on the public
image of someone. When a group or individual bully another group or individual by spreading
rumors, leaving them out of activities, and even telling other people not be friends with them.
Cyber bullying happens online. When one is being cyber bullied, they receive online threats and
they can be blackmailed. Another example of cyber bullying is when someone uses another
persons log in information as their own; using their account for many reasons that can be very
harmful to the person they are pretending to be.

How does bullying affect mental health?
Bullying has many effects, the most important of all is: mental health. Bullying has a big
effect on mental health, as it can make it very bad that the person who is bullied can be
diagnosed with depression or other mental illnesses. Bullying can lead to anxiety, depression,
low self esteem, and poor socializing. It can also cause the person being bullied to isolate
themselves from family gatherings, social activities, group tasks and so on. This effect can cause
long term isolation and can reach educational aspects which has a big impact on a person’s
future.
How can the environment become a bully-free place?
Our environment has a huge impact on us and future generations. In order to make it a
better place to live in, we should not tolerate bullying of any kind. By doing so, we are making
everyone feel welcome and good enough. Schools should try to be more aware about each and
every student’s mental health. If a teacher notices that some students aren’t participating or
always like to be isolated, I suggest they contact the school’s counsel in order to find reasons
about why this might be happening. In terms of cyberbullying, both students and schools should
be aware of the websites they visit and the amount of personal information they share, as it can
be used to manipulate them or steal their identities.
In conclusion, we should work together to make our environment a better place for
ourselves and future generations. It is important to be aware of what is happening around you.
Now that you know the effects of bullying, will you try to make your environment a better place?
Will you try to help others who deal with it?
