Course Title: Communicative Arabic -1


Duration: One Semester
Credit: 4 credit/100 marks

This course will develop both verbal (Speaking and Comprehension) communication Arabic
skills, as well as written (reading and writing) through exercises and practice via hands-on
work by the students. This method will help in giving students as much exposure to Arabic, in
all forms, as possible so that they develop their skills with Arabic language patterns. Students
will be encouraged to use what they have learned in both their written and spoken Arabic to
activate their new vocabulary and help their eyes and ears to capture the pattern of the
language structure. Also, a student’s ability to converse using the words and patterns that he or
she has already learnt cultivates enlightenment to see more of the language’s pattern. With this
background, students are motivated to enrich their vocabulary in keeping with their personal
interests.

The classes conducted at the centre will be spiced with exercises, conversation, supplemental
materials, stories, and humor.
Course materials are selected to expose students to Arab culture. The culture is the setting
which provides the context for the meanings and conventions of Arabic. Thus, information
about culture is introduced in order to enhance the students' understanding and use of the
language.

Unit One: Introduction to the Arab World, Introduction to the Arab Culture, Introduction to
the Arabic language, Introduction to Islam and Arab Islamic Culture, Arabic alphabet, Arabic
letters and their pronunciation, Short and long vowels, Common Arabic words, Use of al on
noun (Sun & moon letters)

Unit Two: Singular and plural, Gender, Definite and indefinite, Demonstrative pronouns,
Singular and plural, Personal pronouns, Nominative sentence (‫)المبتدأ والخبر‬.

Unit Three: Grammar based translation of simple sentences-Arabic-English, Grammar based


translation of simple sentences-English-Arabic, Personal introduction, Things around you,

Unit Four: Writing Skill

This course will foster the ability of the students to engage in simple Arabic conversation on a
range of everyday subjects. In addition to readings and exposure to the culture, you will be
introduced to the following:

Unit-One: Subject and predicate, Vocabulary related to the family, Vocabulary related to
home, Use of adverbs, Prepositions, Adjective, Days of week, Construct state, Months,
Numbers (1-10).

Unit-: Two: Introduction to verbal sentences, Sentences based on perfect verb (‫)الفعل الماضي‬
Conjugation of perfect verb, Trilateral verbs (‫ )المجرد الثالثي‬Vocabulary related to market, Use
of subject in verbal sentences, Intransitive, Transitive,
Unit- Three: Sentences based on imperfect verbs (‫ )الفعل المضارع‬Conjugation of imperfect verbs
(‫ )المضارع الفعل‬Trilateral verb (‫ ) الفعل المضارع الثالثي‬Vocabulary related to restaurant, Use of
subject in imperfect verbs (‫ )الفعل المضارع‬Intransitive of imperfect verbs (‫ )الفعل المضارع‬Use of
object in imperfect verbs (‫ )الفعل المضارع‬Transitive.

This course will develop your understanding of the structure and the pattern of words and
sentences. These rules enable you to make the most of your Arabic vocabulary; whether rich
or poor. We continue to practice conversation and reading skills. In addition to readings and
exposure to the culture, the students of this semester will study the following:

Unit-One: Introduction to imperative verb (‫)فعل األمر‬, Sentences based on imperative verb,
Conjugation of imperative verb, Vocabulary related to hospital, Introduction to negative
imperative verb, Sentences based on negative imperative verb, Conjugation of negative
imperative verb, Numbers (10-20),

Unit-Two: Introduction to Mutall verb(‫)الفعل المعتل‬, Conjugation of Mutall verb(‫)الفعل المعتل‬,


Vocabulary related to the garden, Introduction to Mudaaf verb(‫)الفعل المضاعف‬, Conjugation of
Mudaaf verb(‫)الفعل المضاعف‬, Introduction of Mahmooz verb(‫)الفعل المهموز‬, Conjugation of
Mahmooz verb(‫)الفعل المهموز‬, Vocabulary related to the zoo,
Unit-Three: Dual (Noun, Pronoun, demonstrative pronoun and personal pronoun), Plural
(Nouns, Pronouns, demonstrative pronouns and personal pronouns), Relative pronouns,
Passive voice, Passive voice of past, Conjugation of passive voice of past, Vocabulary
related to the dining table.

This course will continue to develop the student’s Arabic reading, writing, speaking, and
listening skills. The student will learn to make an intelligent guess of the meaning of
unfamiliar words based on language patterns and roots that have been learned previously by
the student. The student, will also, be introduced to some styles of written Arabic analyzing
paragraphs and full articles.

In addition to readings and exposure to more language related details of the Arab culture, this
semester students study the following:

Unit-One: Passive voice, Passive voice of present, Conjugation of passive voice of present,
Means of transport, Numbers (20-100),

Unit-Two: Arabic Sentences based on ‫ كان‬and its sisters. Arabic Sentences based on ‫ إن‬and its
sisters, Composition, English-Arabic Composition (Letter, application & Paragraph-writing).
Unit-Three: Conversation (use of ‫ )كان‬Conversation (use of ‫ )ليس‬Conversation (use of ‫إن‬and ‫)أن‬
Conversation (use of ‫ ليت‬and ‫ )لعل‬Conversation (use of numbers).

Unit-Four: Conversation, Conversation between friends, In the market, At the airport, In the
hospital, Translation (Simple sentences based on nominal and verbal sentences)-, Arabic-
English Translation (Simple sentences based on nominal and verbal sentences),
