exercise can also cause problems. So people are urged to take moderate exercise and eat moderately healthily rather

Green spaces above our heads
Roof gardens, or gardens built on the top of city buildings, have become very popular in recent years,
particularly in developed cities. It is even predicted that they will be the future of city architecture. This is because
lack of space and overpriced land in cities makes it difficult to increase the number of parks and other green areas.
So, what makes these ‘green roofs’ so attractive to city dwellers?
Roof gardens can improve air quality in cities. Plants take in and keep heat and light, and help to cool the
environment around them. This way, green roofs help reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to heating and
cooling buildings. They also help decrease dust pollution and the formation of smog, a mixture of smoke and fog,
which is common in big cities.
Moreover, green roofs can provide new habitats for wildlife. They can help reduce the impact of urban
development on habitat loss. For example, the City Hall in Chicago, the USA, has become home to more than
Mã đề 000 Page 2
20,000 plants of over 150 different kinds. The living roof of Vancouver Convention Centre in Canada hosts
400,000 plants and 60,000 bees. Roof gardens also attract birds and insects, which increases the biodiversity in the
area.
In summary, roof gardens can reduce pollution and improve human interaction with nature by introducing
green space into the built environment. Connecting with nature is beneficial to our physical and mental health, and
can increase quality of life.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Family systems vary greatly across the world, reflecting diverse cultural norms and societal dynamics. In
North America and northern Europe, the nuclear family, consisting of two generations - a father, a mother, and one
or more children, is often considered the prevailing model. Conversely, in many other regions, extended families
that encompass grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are regarded as the conventional structure.
The prevalence of nuclear families in Western societies is attributed to the impact of industrialization and
urbanization. This transformation began during the late 18th and 19th centuries when individuals migrated to cities
to seek employment in the burgeoning factories of the Industrial Revolution. The 20th century witnessed an even
greater shift as industrialization led more people to leave their extensive extended families behind. Urbanization
resulted in smaller living spaces, inadequate to accommodate extended families.
The shift toward nuclear families redistributed family responsibilities. Duties such as providing sustenance,
maintaining the household, preparing meals, child rearing, education, and caring for the elderly shifted primarily to
the parents, occasionally with state support. This trade-off was made in pursuit of a higher standard of living
offered by urban environments.
However, the definitions of "nuclear" and "extended" families are more complex than commonly perceived.
Most nuclear families are still connected to extended family members, often involving grandparents, aunts, uncles,
and cousins. The distinguishing factor is that nuclear families reside in separate households. For instance, in Greece
or Italy, a nuclear family may occupy its own apartment, while extended family members may reside in the same
building or neighborhood, maintaining close daily interactions.
Geographical separation does not necessarily equate to emotional detachment within families. Even in North
America and northern Europe, grandparents maintain strong bonds with their grandchildren, prompting families to
travel considerable distances to spend time together. In emergencies, grandparents often assist their adult children
by taking care of their grandchildren. Similarly, when aging parents require support, adult children may invite them
to live in their homes, effectively converting their nuclear family into an extended one.
The structure of families undergoes constant evolution. While urbanization and industrialization exert
significant influence, other factors like marriage, childbirth, widowhood, divorce, and death contribute to these
shifts. Children grow into adults, and adults grow old. Consequently, nuclear families may expand into extended
ones, and extended families may contract into nuclear ones. Family bonds may strengthen or weaken over time. In
a dynamic world, the family will continue to adapt, yet it is expected to remain the fundamental unit of society.
