Overview of Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that uses kicking, punching, and

blocking to defeat an opponent. It originated in ancient Korea and was
developed in the 1940s and 1950s. The name literally translates to "the art of
kicking and punching”. The main objective in taekwondo competition is to
score points by landing accurate kicks or punches on the opponent’s scoring
areas (torso and head) while following the rules of fair play and control.
Matches are typically held in three rounds, with the competitor earning the
most points or achieving a knockout declared the winner. Fighters must follow
strict rules, such as no striking below the belt, no grabbing, and no
unsportsmanlike conduct. Protective gear, including headgear, chest
protectors, and gloves, is worn for safety. Taekwondo also emphasizes
discipline, respect, and self-improvement, making it both a competitive sport
and a way of life.

Technical Skills

To play taekwondo, you need to embody its basic skills, such as knowing
the kicking techniques; the proper punching and striking; how to block and
defend yourself against attacks; how to maintain balance and posture; and to
stay disciplined and mentally focus during the game.

Tactical Skills

In Taekwondo, tactical skills involve strategy, timing, and movement to

gain an advantage over an opponent. Fighters use distance control to stay
within striking range while avoiding attacks. Timing and counterattacks help
them exploit openings, while feinting and deception trick opponents into
reacting prematurely. Speed and reaction time are crucial for executing fast
strikes, and angle positioning allows fighters to attack from unexpected
directions. Defensively, they use dodging, blocking, and parrying to minimize
damage. Additionally, psychological tactics, such as confidence and focus,
play a key role in maintaining control during a match. These skills, combined
with technical ability, make a well-rounded Taekwondo fighter.
Physical Demands

Taekwondo is a physically demanding martial art that requires a

combination of strength, speed, flexibility, endurance, and coordination.
Athletes must develop powerful leg muscles for high, fast kicks and strong
core stability for balance and control. Cardiovascular endurance is essential
to sustain energy during intense sparring matches, while agility and reflexes
help with quick movements and defensive techniques. Flexibility is also
crucial for executing high kicks and dynamic movements without injury.

Mental Demands

Taekwondo requires strong mental discipline, focus, and resilience.

Practitioners must develop quick decision-making skills to anticipate and
counter opponents’ moves while maintaining composure under pressure.
Mental toughness is essential to endure intense training, overcome setbacks,
and push through physical fatigue. Concentration and strategic thinking are
crucial in executing precise techniques and adapting to different fighting styles.
Additionally, self-control and emotional regulation help athletes stay calm
and respectful, following the sport’s emphasis on courtesy and integrity.

Personal Reflection
Why I chose taekwondo among other sports?

Taekwondo is a wonderful sport, perhaps, a masterpiece. Personally, I

haven’t tried doing this sport but if given a chance, I would learn it in a beat.
For me, learning it will have a lot of advantages, especially nowadays where
violence is prevalent in our society. I can use it for self-defense. Aside from the
fun I’m getting, I can use it as my protection against danger.

In the process of learning this sport, I believe one of the things that will
hinder me in showing my full potential would be my mental focus. I am easily
distracted, I struggle in concentrating. Aside from that, taekwondo will also
challenge my strength. Being petite is a great disadvantage. However, my
willingness and dedication for this sport will surpass my shortcomings. I love
this sport more than any sport. Learning it will not be a piece of cake nor like a
walk in the park but I am no coward. I am a girl who loves challenges. I am girl
who loves taekwondo.
