Assignment 317.3 - Personal Reflection on Musicality and Style
Relationship to musical output:
I have taken part in a gig we set up in college for our external assessment. I managed to set
up all the mics and instruments and then I did the sound check and setting the gain for them
as well. I also did something similar to when I studied music in school. We set up a charity
gig and my main responsibility was to be a health and safety inspector. I made sure there
were no hazards and I taped down all the wires correctly. I also had to tick off a list of things
that needed to be in place before the gig commenced, this included knowing all the fire
exits in the building and telling the audience about them before we began. Another
relationship I’ve had with music is that I used to play quite a few instruments. For example, I
started off having piano lessons from age 7 till about age 15, I also competed in national
competitions for being in a marching band playing the cornet. Music has had a big impact on
my life, so much that I ended up being on live TV playing in the London New Year’s Day
parade for the queen. This has affected my life greatly, unfortunately I don’t have a specific
instrument I play anymore, due to not having the time or money to carry it out anymore.
Relationship to own image/lifestyle:
Being involved with music in my life has definitely affected my style in ways. As a teenager
(13-15) I was obsessed with grunge music and It definitely affected the way I dressed, going
from wearing clothes the kids my age was wearing to wearing a lot more flannels and jeans.
However, now I just wear what I feel comfortable in, but I also do follow style trends. I think
music has made this happen for me because before I got into music and genres, I didn’t
really care about what I wore. Rock ‘n’ roll made me become more confident in ways too.
Listening to different genres and styles that really stood out to me and others, made me
want to stand out to other people and look different, this is why I tried lots of other looks
such as wearing shell suit jackets and old skool vans whilst most girls my age were wearing
the basic new look clothes or wearing Nike shoes. Music has definitely made me a lot more
confident in myself and how I approach people. Before discovering certain bands, I would
say I was a very shy person but it all changed once I had broadened my horizon in music.
Relationship to personal musical tastes:
My music taste has broadened massively, before I got into these genres, I only listened to
what was playing on the radio or what was in the charts. Through friend recommendations I
was able to discover all different music types and to this day my taste is only getting bigger. I
now listen to almost everything, whether it is classical piano music to psychedelic rock to
crossover jazz. Listening to artists such as guns ‘n’ roses or nirvana introduced me to the
rock/grunge scene, and through that I found out about to many more artists and discovered
different sub-genres too.
