wardrobes for ample storage and a glass topped

With a wishlist that included a kitchen that could effortlessly entertain

up to 100 guests it was apparent to designer Hilary Ryan of Impala Kitchens &
Bathrooms that a radical revision of the existing footprint was required to create a
dream kitchen for the Moussa family in their leafy Carlingford home.

Numerous walls were removed to overcome the convoluted floorplan and create
a magnificent open plan kitchen that brings together all the adjacent living and
outdoor areas.

This creative design solution with the inclusion of a large butler’s pantry created
superior pantry and appliance storage which is used as a secondary kitchen during
extensive entertaining. A large format sink allows for easy washing of large platters
and acts as a second cleaning station which keeps the main kitchen streamlined and
clutter free.

New doors provide aspect and easy access to the pool and outdoor entertaining
areas. The expansive island bench creates free flowing space with hidden storage
that can be shared by many cooks and a well zoned layout keeps everything easily
in reach.

The family loved the result so much that they immediately

enlisted Impala to work the same magic on the master suite.
From a bathroom with no natural light and a wardrobe with
not enough storage, the walls that were holding back the
room’s potential were removed to create a highly refined
design incorporating a functional ensuite, a glorious walk in
robe, study nook and resort style bedroom with lounge area.

THE ORIGINAL
Infinito bookshelf, designed by
Franco Albini in 1956/57 and
produced by Cassina since 2008
The form An open bookshelf of wood, held in place by adjustable legs
that are fitted between the floor and ceiling.
What makes it special? Prior to Albini’s design, bookshelves generally had
four legs that supported the shelves on the front and back edges. Infinito
removed much of this leg clutter, reducing the structure to just two or
three uprights (depending on the size chosen). This means the shelves
genuinely float in free space, providing an airy, minimal look.
The design is suitable for use against a wall, but really comes into its
own as a bookshelf and room divider because it is visually appealing from
all sides. It’s also truly modular as the horizontal elements can be plain
shelves, or storage units with two outward opening doors or a single
bottom-hinged panel. This allow open or closed – and therefore, visible
or invisible – storage or a pleasing mixture of the two. Shelf heights are
adjustable, with each bay housing two to five shelves. Available as a one-,
two- or three-bay unit, the design can be as small as 90cm or as large as
260cm wide. Ceiling heights of 268 to 290cm can be accommodated.
Albini was born in Como near Milan and went on to be one of the
leaders of the Rationalist movement based in the area before WW2.
While he was an exceptional architect and exhibition designer, he is better
known for his furniture and object designs – in particular, a television he
designed for Brionvega in 1964, and desks and chairs for Cassina and Arflex.
Expect to pay From $12,770 for a single bay with four shelves. Available

THE UP-AND-COMER
Jack shelving system by
Michael Anastassiades for B&B Italia
The form A minimal open-shelving system held in place by adjustable tubular-metal
uprights wedged between the floor and ceiling.
What makes it special? London-based Cypriot designer Michael Anastassiades is renowned for his
gravity-defying lighting designs, produced for both his eponymous company and Italian lighting
giant Flos. Jack is one of Anastassiades’ small number of furniture designs and a system that pays
homage to the brilliance of Franco Albini’s Infinito while rethinking the concept. Designed in 2018,
it utilises tubular aluminium for its strength-to-weight ratio and visual simplicity. Jack’s cleverness lies
in a totally invisible height adjustment, which gives the product its name. The same tubular material
is laid horizontally to act as a spine that supports each of the shelves, resulting in small platforms that
appear to float between the uprights. Jack can be added to, creating bays of shelving of infinite
length, and is available in 14 heights, to accommodate ceiling heights of between 220cm and 324cm
(with infinite adjustment within that). Shelves can be ordered in 75 or 90cm widths.
Expect to pay $5310 for one bay with four shelves. Available in white or black lacquer.

think big
Large-format tiles are working their way
out of commercial spaces and into our
homes, and the effect is nothing short of
spectacular. Natural or engineered stone
works beautifully on slab tiles, where the
veining and variation of tone is given
a chance to spread across a generous
surface without being interrupted by
grout lines. And you know what less grout
means? Less scrubbing! Larger tiles are easier
to keep clean than smaller, more intricate
designs. While there is a definite wow
factor to a wet area awash in luxe marble,
ideally the surfaces are broken up with
elements that add personality and create
a certain look. Play up the refined feel
of this type of tile with freestanding tubs,
pedestal sinks and elegant tapware.
Classic wall detailing, such as wainscotting
and beadboard, will also suit.

for himself designing covetable hospitality,

The Imperial hotel in Erskineville, Watsons
Bay Boutique Hotel and an award-winning
house in Palm Beach. “Each project needs
to tell a story which is valuable – each needs its own spirit,” says Jeremy.
He took a slightly different tack with the Victorian terrace he shares
with his partner Tess Glasson, however. “We have taken a very
pragmatic approach to renovating here,” says the PR and marketing
director of Alexander & Co and mother to sons Jude, Archer, Felix
and Nash. “As we have had more children, we have added spaces.”
Their reasons for settling on this particular home were similarly
practical. The couple had six-month-old twins when they were shopping

around, so the process was not as exhaustive as it could have been.
Freestanding on one side and conveniently located, this house was
a standout. It was also very well priced, leaving them money to carry
The whole house is designed out substantial alterations. “The thing that keeps us in the house, besides

the space was really key to the success of that renovation, and we’ve done
another two since then,” says Tess. The house was completely gutted,
leaving only the two front living spaces and upstairs bedroom intact.
“We call it the little house that could,” says Jeremy. “We’ve gone up,
we’ve gone out and we’ve maxed the space as much as we can.”
Mirrored panels concealing a cloakroom bounce light into the new
entrance that makes use of the side entry passage. To the right of this
is the latest iteration of the airy combined kitchen, living and laundry
space, with inbuilt sunken seating opening out onto the backyard.
A contemporary staircase behind the entrance leads up to the three
bedrooms and two bathrooms. The shiplap cladding-lined loft room
above them (where two of the boys sleep) was completed in only four
weeks. “The whole house is designed around the flow from mealtime
to surftime to homework,” laughs Jeremy, who added an outdoor
shower near the front door, behind which are cleverly concealed
racks for the family’s bikes, surfboards and skateboards.
Like the layout, the material palette has evolved over time. “We have
ended up with a lot of materials that were low cost but full of life.
While we are okay with that, it was not a deliberate strategy,” says
Jeremy of the limewashed pine and white paint he specified for the first
renovation. More recently, Carrara marble has featured, particularly in
spaces where the timber flooring was replaced by marble tiles and there

surfaces and undyed alpaca-wool carpet softens the rooms upstairs.

Now that the renovations are finished, the house is perfect for the
busy family. “It’s a very compact house for seven people and a dog
but it works,” says Tess. With the latest structural changes complete
and a much-needed injection of furniture, she says the just-ordered
blinds for the sunken lounge are the last thing on the agenda: “They
will be the close of this most recent story.”

LESSONS LEARNT
“ We underestimated the wear
and tear on our wooden floor”
JEREMY BULL, ARCHITECT/OWNER

“We installed a floating timber floor in the living

area during the first renovation. Within a few
years, however, the timber got trashed by the
sunlight streaming in and all the foot traffic, not
to mention the impact of four small children.
And when we moved the table off it, there were
these shining relics all over the ground where
the table feet had been. So when we got to the
last renovation, we’d already decided to put in
the Carrara. Marble is much more hard-wearing
and practical. The stone tiling gives the room an
elegant robustness – it’s like a little cathedral.”

“When houses became much more open plan, you ended up with

a sense of openness and flow, while allowing us to create more
intimate spaces when we need to.” The ceiling heights increase

H
ome may well be where the heart is, but for
former apartment dwellers Mike and Tom,
the heart of their home has long been their
miniature schnauzers Oscar and Harvey.
It’s only fitting, then, that providing the
gorgeous pooches with room to roam was
the motivation for the renovation of the pair’s ageing
Queenslander in Brisbane.
The man who realised their dream is architect Aaron Peters
of Vokes And Peters. “Mike and Tom’s pups are at the centre of
their lives, and finding a place with a generous backyard for
them was really important,” says Aaron. “It’s also fair to say that
they’re very passionate about design culture and were excited
to embark on an architectural project.”
Yet when Mike and Tom first stepped over the threshold,
they quickly found out that their future home could comfortably
claim the title of ‘worst house in the street’. “It was badly
affected by termites,” says Mike. “There were holes in the floors,
the back of the house was partly demolished and it was
completely uninhabitable. Pleasingly, Aaron told us that he had
worked with houses in a worse state than this.”
Undeterred by the challenges and scale of the project, Aaron
and his architectural partner Stuart Vokes, along with interior
designer Georgia Cannon, embarked on the revamp and an
addition that houses new sleeping and living quarters
with an easy link to the outdoor area and new pool.
Today, all four family members are clearly delighted with
their transformed abode. “It has that relaxed feeling, while
being true to its heritage at the same time,” says Mike.

house slightly more and built two extra bedrooms, a bathroom
and a laundry-garage below the original house. We also
reconfigured the upper floor to house two good-sized bedrooms,
a walk-in-robe, a bathroom and a powder room.”
The home now pays homage to its roots while showcasing
a contemporary sense of light, space and beautiful materials.
“We wanted to celebrate some of the original features, as Mike
and Tom deliberately bought an old Queenslander cottage because
they love that style’s feeling and sense of history,” says Georgia.
Adds Aaron: “A lot of the new cabinetry and shelving is made
from white-painted pine. Our intention was to create new
elements that used the traditional language of painted,
Queenslander-style timber carpentry. While much of the paint
palette is neutral, we used clear-finished timber elements,
natural stone and brass to provide highlights.”
Certainly, the result reflects the personality of its residents.
“It is beyond our hopes and expectations,” says Mike.

Mike and Tom did their homework when it came to honing
their design philosophy. “We bought lots of magazines along
the way,” says Mike. “We also looked at Instagram and other
architects’ work for inspiration. We then decided to involve
an interior designer fairly soon after the work commenced.
By that stage, we knew the house would be beautiful and
wanted to ensure that the furnishings and interior design
matched the quality of the home.”
Georgia spent time with Mike and Tom in their apartment
while this home was being repaired and renovated. “It enabled
me to get a feel for how they like to live and the pieces they
like to live with,” she says. “They’ve travelled extensively and
their style is influenced by those travels, with beautiful
mementos of their time away.”
It was agreed that crisp white walls should provide a neutral
backdrop throughout, while striking pendants would capture
attention in key rooms. Bold colour would prevail, courtesy
of vibrant works of art and furnishings. “A lot of people shy
away from colour but Mike and Tom were very open to it,
which was exciting,” says Georgia.

Bathrooms are necessarily waterproof and

looks are important, absorbency is a must.
Look for designs in properly absorbent fabrics

off, and a bath mat that feels nice underfoot.
Thicker towels are usually more absorbent

Flexibility is extremely desirable in a
fridge. Manufacturers have realised this,
with Samsung building a FlexZone drawer
into its Family Hub fridges. It allows you
to transform this drawer from a fridge to
a freezer, or vice versa, at the touch of a
button. Panasonic’s PrimeFresh fridge also
features a convertible case that can be set to
-3˚C to softly freeze raw meat and seafood
(extending its life, flavour and nutrients and
making it easy to cut it without defrosting)
or at 0˚C to chill highly perishable items
(such as dairy and meat) and prevent
them from spoiling prematurely.
Liebherr’s BioFresh technology also
addresses the fact that food stays in

just above 0°C - a temperature most
conventional refrigerators cannot achieve

basket
This Jane Birkin-inspired hamper
is big enough to transport a feast,
but what we really love are its two
clever al fresco innovations. The
basket is, in fact, a cooler to keep
the rosé chilled, and its wooden lid
transforms into a sturdy portable
cheeseboard. Happy days!
The insulated picnic basket is $199.
