Learning Journal Unit 6: Applying Feedback

One of my favorite activities outside of school and work is gardening. Gardening is

something I deeply enjoy because it allows me to connect with nature, relieve stress, and
grow fresh produce that can be used in my meals. For me, gardening is a form of relaxation
that also provides a sense of accomplishment. The ability to nurture plants from seeds into
full-grown vegetables and flowers is incredibly rewarding. It offers a break from the demands
of work and school, allowing me to focus on something calming and therapeutic. Gardening
is not only a hobby but also an essential part of my self-care routine.

One reason I love gardening is that it helps me reduce stress. After a long day of studying or
working, I find comfort in spending time with my plants. According to an article on the
health benefits of gardening, "spending time in nature can reduce the production of stress
hormones and enhance feelings of well-being" (Jones, 2021, p.5). This claim highlights how
being in a green space can positively affect mental health. I’ve personally noticed how my
anxiety decreases when I am surrounded by the calming sounds of birds and the sight of
flourishing plants. The rhythmic motions of watering, pruning, and planting give me a
meditative experience that rejuvenates my mind.

Another aspect of gardening that makes it important to me is the opportunity to grow my own
food. Having a garden allows me to grow fresh vegetables and herbs right in my backyard.
This not only saves me money but also ensures that I can eat nutritious, organic food. As I
harvest the fruits of my labour, I feel a sense of pride knowing that I’ve created something
useful and healthy. It also encourages me to eat more plant-based meals, which is beneficial
for my overall health. Gardening provides me with the knowledge of where my food comes
from and how it is grown, deepening my connection to the environment.

In addition to stress relief and growing food, gardening teaches me valuable life skills such as
patience and responsibility. Plants require consistent care, and their growth is not always
immediate. I have learned that sometimes, despite my best efforts, plants might not flourish
as expected, and that’s okay. This teaches me to be patient and resilient. As I nurture the
plants, I learn that growth takes time, whether it's with plants or in life. This process is a
reminder that success doesn’t happen overnight and that persistence is essential.

In conclusion, gardening is an activity that holds great importance for me. It helps me
manage stress, grow my own food, and teaches me patience and responsibility. I highly
encourage others to try gardening, whether they have a backyard or just a small space for a
few pots. Not only can it be a therapeutic activity, but it also provides a way to connect with
nature and promote a healthier lifestyle. I believe everyone can benefit from the calming
effects of tending to plants.
