Components of Film Analysis
(1) Mise-en-scene
(2) Cinematography
(3) Editing
(4) Sound Design
All of these elements are connected together in the meaning of any sequence.
However, it can help our understanding to look at each element distinctly and show its individual
importance.
Mise-en-scene
All the elements in front of the camera and how they are arranged.
Includes:
Shot distance (close-up, medium shot, long shot)
Shot angle (high, low, tilted)
Camera movement
Lighting
Setting
Props / Costume
Actors and performance
All of the manipulation of the visual image
during the shooting and post-production
stages
Quality of the film image (crisp, grainy, etc)
Cinematogra Use of color or black and white
phy Contrast
Frame size (aspect ratio)
Lens (wide angle, normal, zoom)
Focus (deep, shallow, rack)
Editing
Invisible Style
Kuleshov Effect

Film sound is divided into 3 main elements:
(1) dialogue
(2) sound effects (Foley artist)
(3) music
Sound Sound design is how all of these are mixed
together.
Design Diegetic sound (from the story space) or
non-diegetic (from outside story)
Internal diegetic (mind of character)
Voiceover narration (1st and 3rd person)
On-screen and off-screen sound

Basic setup: A couple in a long-term relationship is separating
because he needs to go overseas for work.
Describe how the scene is filmed (mise-en-scene, cinematography,
editing, sound design).
Discuss why the director chose to film the sequence this way. How
does the scene create meaning? What different approach or
approaches could have been chosen?
