Plan of Investigation

I belong to the group 'Natural Disasters in the caribbean'.My subtopic is 'Hurricanes'. I choose
this topic because it happens at certain times in the year and I want to learn more about it. I plan
to collect my data using: poems, videos, youtube and offline sources:
newspaper, magazines, articles. As a student of English A, I will be viewing multiple pieces of
data therefore I hope to improve my communication skills. As a person I will grow and be
awearness to be able to share it with my family.

Newspaper Article : Tropical Storm Bret barrels toward Eastern Caribbean at near-hurricane
strength by Trinidad and Tobago Guardian on
https://guardian.co.tt/news/tropical-storm-bret-barrels-toward-eastern-caribbean-at-
nearhurricane-strength-6.2.1736183.1e65ff97d3

A hurricane watch was issued for St. Lucia as Tropical Storm Bret barreled toward the eastern
Caribbean Thursday at near-hurricane strength.

The storm was located about 170 miles (265 kilometers) east of Barbados on Thursday morning
and was moving west at 15 mph (24 kph). It had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110
kph), just below the 74 mph (119 kph) winds of a Category 1 hurricane.

Airports, businesses, schools and offices were closing in St. Lucia and Dominica as forecasters
warned of torrential downpours, landslides and flooding.

“Protect your lives, property and livelihoods,” urged St. Lucia Prime Minister Philip Pierre.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for Dominica, St. Lucia and Martinique, while a tropical
storm watch was issued for Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The storm was
expected to start affecting islands in the eastern Caribbean late Thursday, according to the
National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Andre Joyeux, director of St. Lucia’s Meteorological Services, said Bret is expected to cut
directly through the island.

“So we are hoping that persons take heed,” he said.

Up to 10 inches (3 centimeters) of rain forecast for the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe
south to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, including Barbados, the hurricane center said. Waves
of up to 13 feet (4 meters) also were forecast for Guadeloupe, according to local meteorologists.

Bret is expected to lose strength once it enters the eastern Caribbean Sea, and it is forecast to
dissipate by Saturday.

However, the Caribbean is closely watching a tropical depression that is trailing Bret and has a
90% chance of formation. Early forecasts expect it to become Tropical Storm Cindy on
Thursday and take a path northeast of the Caribbean through open waters.

If the depression strengthens into a storm, it would be the first time since record-keeping began
that two storms form in the tropical Atlantic in June, according to meteorologist Philip Klotzbach
at Colorado State University.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecast 12 to 17 named storms for
this year’s hurricane season. It said between five and nine of those storms could become
hurricanes, including up to four major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher.

Poem: Problems with Hurricanes by Victor Hernández Cruz on 1949

https://poets.org/poem/problems-hurricanes
A campesino looked at the air
And told me:
With hurricanes it's not the wind
or the noise or the water.
I'll tell you he said:
it's the mangoes, avocados
Green plantains and bananas
flying into town like projectiles.

How would your family

feel if they had to tell
The generations that you
got killed by a flying
Banana.

Death by drowning has honor

If the wind picked you up
and slammed you
Against a mountain boulder
This would not carry shame
But
to suffer a mango smashing
Your skull
or a plantain hitting your
Temple at 70 miles per hour
is the ultimate disgrace.

The campesino takes off his hat—

As a sign of respect
toward the fury of the wind
And says:
Don't worry about the noise
Don't worry about the water
Don't worry about the wind—
If you are going out
beware of mangoes
And all such beautiful
sweet things.

A short story on Hurricanes : Hurricane by National Geographic
https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/hurricane/
Hurricanes are tropical storms that form in the Atlantic Ocean with wind speeds of at least 119
kilometers (74 miles) per hour. Hurricanes have three main parts, the calm eye in the center, the
eyewall where the winds and rains are the strongest, and the rain bands which spin out from the
center and give the storm its size. Meteorologists use the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale
to classify hurricanes into categories one to five. Categories three to five are considered a major
storm. A category five hurricane has wind speeds that exceed 252 kilometers (157 miles) per
hour. Coastal areas are often most heavily impacted by the damaging winds, rains, and storm
surges as the storm collides with or brushes land.

Reflection 2

Newspaper Article : Tropical Storm Bret barrels toward Eastern Caribbean at near-hurricane
strength
The author expresses how quickly a category one hurricane could emerge into a category 3
which is more dangerous and can cause more destruction

Poem: Problems with Hurricanes by Victor Hernández Cruz on 1949

I noticed that the poet uses fruits to describe the derby in the air

A short story on Hurricanes : Hurricane by National Geographic

I learn that costal area receives the most amount of damages from a hurricane

Reflection 3

Newspaper Article : Tropical Storm Bret barrels toward Eastern Caribbean at near-hurricane
strength
I observe how these hurricanes are so large that they can impact more than one Caribbean
island.

Poem: Problems with Hurricanes by Victor Hernández Cruz on 1949

In the poem the author tries to make a hurricane no as scary as how it actually is

Oral Presentation Piece

n the Caribbean, where the winds do roam,

A hurricane stirs, far from its home.
With swirling clouds and thunderous might,
It dances through day and consumes the night.

The ocean churns, a fierce, wild sea,

As palm trees bend, surrendering to the spree.
Waves crash high, like mountains they rise,
Under the tempest, the calmness lies.

The sky darkens, a cloak of despair,

Yet through the chaos, there's beauty rare.
For nature's fury, though fierce and grand,
Is a reminder of life, in this vibrant land.

When the winds subside and the sun breaks through,

The Caribbean smiles, refreshed and anew.
With stories to tell of the storm's fierce embrace,
Life continues, in this enchanting place.
