Bob Marley’s widow, Rita Marley, is currently moving forward with plans to
exhume her late husband’s body in Jamaica and rebury it in Shashemene,
Ethiopia. Associated Press reports that no date has been set for the
reburial, but that it will most likely follow the monthly-long celebration of
what would have been Marley’s sixtieth birthday next month. Rita said: “We
should bring his remains to Ethiopia. It is part of Bob’s own mission. Bob’s
whole life is about Africa. It is not about Jamaica. He has a right for his
remains to be where he would love them to be. This was his mission.” Rita
Marley, who has the support of the Ethiopian government and church
added, “Ethiopia is his spiritual resting place. With the sixtieth anniversary
this year, the impact is there and the time is right”.

Bob was born in Jamaica but later he became an ambassador of reggae

music and a worldwide cultural icon. His most famous song “No Woman, No
Cry”, was number one all over the world for several weeks, and has been
continually revived in different versions by other stars. Marley embraced the
Rastafarian religion, which viewed Ethiopia’s last emperor, Haile Selassie, as
a living God. Marley died in 1981 at the age of 36 after refusing treatment
for cancer because of his religious beliefs. The Rastafarian religion is
practised by approximately 700,000 people worldwide. The religion
includes a oneness with nature, smoking marijuana as a sacrament, and
allowing your hair to remain uncombed.

Rita Marley is planning a concert on her late husband´s birthday, February

6th, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event will benefit poor families in Ethiopia,
and will include performances by the Marley family, Baaba Maal, Youssou N
´Dour, and Angelique Kidjo.

Which famous person, alive today, will be remembered for a olong time
after she/he has died and why?( max 120 words)
I saw him today for the first time since we finished and I have to admit that I had
mixed feelings about it, although on the surface I was calm and friendly. Our break-
up was mutual, well, almost, but first, let me give you the background.
We´d been together for about three years, having met after school one day. I was
walking home and he just came up to me and started talking. He was quite cute, so
I gave him my sweetest smile and it started from there. Looking back on it, there
were a ,ot of good times, although we didn´t really have a lot in common. That
doesn´t matter too much when you´re sixteen and especially if he´s your first
boyfriend.
It was even better because at the time all my best friends were single and they’d
gather around, desperate to hear what we´ d been up to. It was almost like we were
all going out with him.

What I said about having little in common was probably the main reason why we
finished. I said before that it was a joint decision, but that’s not quite true. I’d been
thinking for a while that the spark had gone from the relationship but I just needed
a bit more time to work up the courage to tell him it was over. Then, out of the blue,
one Saturday afternoon in the park, with no warning, he dumped me!
I was so surprised and I really didn’t know how to react, so I just “OK” and he left
quickly to avoid further embarrassment. At first all I felt was indignant. It was my
job to finish with him and now everyone would think he made the decision on his
own. Why is it so important what other people think when you’re a teenager?
Then I went into a weepy phase, crying into my pillow at night. I wasn’t happy, so I
decided to take some positive action: forget the good times and think about the
bad. With the help of my friends, I made a list of all the things that annoyed me
about him. It was surprisingly easy and made me realise that the break-up was
definitely for the best. However, seeing him today brought back some of the happy
memories, and that’s why I had mixed feelings, but life goes on and now I’m a
stronger person for it.

The New World. How amazing it must have been, centuries ago, to set sail into the
unknown! Those explorers, who loved freedom and independence, had to travel on
uncomfortable old wooden ships. Unlike those explorers of old, however, you can
have the privilege of travelling in absolute comfort aboard Sea Princess, one of
Princess Cruises´superliners. Princess has its own unique style, perfectly suited to
21st century cruisers. If you enjoy ships with an intimate atmosphere, but a wide
range of facilities and activities, you should choose this cruise.
Sophistication is backed not only by years of experience but also by an unbeatable
range of itineraries worldwide. A cruise such as this is amazing value. Remember, it
includes flights, accommodation and entertainment worthy of a Broadway show. It´s
comparable to the best resorts…. But with Sea Princess your resort travels with you,
taking you from one fascinating place to another. Like a great film, this cruise
opens with the Manhattan skyline, as Sea Princess bears you away down the
Hudson River, after a night in New York. Sea Princess passes the point where the
Pilgrim Fathers set foot on American soil, and arrives in the lively city of Boston,
where the struggle for national independence began.
Bar Harbor, the next poet of call, marks a change of mood. Sailing and whale –
watching are two of the optional activities here. Approaching Newfoundland, your
realise that exploring these northerly regions would be nearly impossible except on
a cruise. The voyage ends in the beautiful city of Quebec, the heart of French
Canada, whose entire historic centre is a maze of narrow streets. It´s a grand finale
for this brilliant production. Remember, a discount of 50% will be made for bookings
made before November 30th.

OPCION 1 JUNIO 2005

One April evening in 2003, Raymond and Pauline Harris were driving home from
their holiday along the A3 in West England. Their Peugeot 106 was stacked with
duty-free goods and two heavy suitcases. Faced with a car coming towards him on
the wrong side of the road, Raymond braked hard, but it was too late to avoid a
crash. Both Raymond and Pauline were killed – but not as a result of the collision.
The car´s passenger compartment kept its protective shape, but it was the heavy
suitcases hurtling forward that crushed the couple to death. On another occasion,
near London, two sisters were travelling as passengers. One, in the back, was not
wearing her seat-belt. The terrible result of a collision was that one sister killed the
other.

As people have bought larger cars, carrying more and more thing, they have turned
them into almost a second home. Mobile phones, coffee cups, tins, umbrellas,
personal stereos, laptop computers, bottles, are all regularly on board without any
precautions. However many safety features we have, like seatbelts, air bags and
anti-lock braking systems, loose objects in a car are potentially deadly.
Vehicle testers have simulated crashes with dummies inside loaded cars at just 50
kph; the results were horrifying. “If a car hits a solid object at 50kph, a ten-kilo
weight will continue travelling forward, hitting you with the force of half a ton. In
one test, the lap top computer flew forward, striking the driver who would have
been killed by massive brain damage” said David Mosley, a safety expert. “One
baby buggy cracked into the head of the front seat passenger, causing serious,
possibly fatal injury. Unbelted rear-seat passengers can become a deadly force too,
and the backs of car seats are not designed to withstand loads moving at high
speed”.

OPCION 2 2005

Millions of parents spend their lives chauffeuring their children around. On average
they clock up 5,000 miles a year, according to a survey. By the time children reach
their 17th birthday, this adds up to 80,000 miles.
According to the findings, the average car-driving parents spends 54% of their
driving time on child-related chauffeuring, including school runs, and a mere 12%
on their own trips. That has got to be wrong. Living in the country is one thing. You
need a car and you need to ferry your children about because of the distances
involved and the lack of public transport. But many parents live in urban areas.
Obviously, children need to be driven to school until they are old enough to use
public transport, and toddlers need to be ferried to the occasional party. The other
stuff though – the drama and clarinet lessons, the extra tennis tuition is completely
striking. And the ferrying around of children aged 14 and 15 seems silly. Why not
just point out that they are, in fact, bipeds and there is a thing called a bus?
Numerous people now believe that you have failed as a parent if your child doesn´t
have at least four activities to be driven to every Saturday. Alarmingly, this breeds
parents who welcome a kind of martyrdom, seeing it as assign of being a “good”
and “devoted” parent. The more tired they are, the more they have no time to
themselves, the better they feel they are doing.
The movement that says your child must be stimulated and entertained at all costs
(including that of your personal life) has gathered momentum in the past decade
and the situation is now out of control.

Are you in favour or against children going to extra activities after school?
Why/why not? (max 120 words)
A friend of mine told me recently about a test designed to determine if a child is
going to be successful in the adult world. I´m not sure how scientific the test
intended to be or if my friend remembered the details accurately, but here goes.

A four-year-old child is in the psychologist´s office. There is a delicious looking

chocolate on the table. The chocolate is easy for the child to see and is perfectly
accessible. The psychologist engages the child in conversation for a few minutes
and then pretends that she has to leave the office.

“If the chocolate is still there when I come back” she says “ I´ll give it to you and
another one, But if you eat that chocolate before I come back, there won´t be
another!”
Well, most of the children apparently took a “bird-in-the-hand” view and ate the
chocolate while the psychologist was away. A few, however, exercised self-control
and let if well alone. Ten years after, it seems, the children who didn´t eat the
chocolate were showing more signs of success in their studies. Why? The idea, it
seems, is that instead of being subject to their immediate impulses, they are
capable of sacrifice in the short term in order to gain in the long term.

Former rugby league player, kitchen designer and now bullfighter, Frank Evans is
clearly a man of many talents. Evans became the first Englishman to earn the title
of matador de toros after taking the alternative, a unique ceremony where the
bullfighter goes out to face his first fully grown bull.

“It´s taken me 27 years, 31 junior fights, two gorings, a lot of bruises, a lot of hassle
and cost me a small fortune. To me, it´s a romance. I love the bulls, but you cannot
explain that to people who don´t want to understand.” In the ring at Chillón, the
lean and balding Mr Evans dispatched a 1,012 pound bull named Urcolo. “The head
will be put on the wall of my study in Eccles” said Mr Evans, who admits to being
forty-something

The crowd of 2,000 had paid twelve pounds for a ticket and their knowledge was
considerable. Most were attracted by the two other fighters, Vicente Ruiz and his
brother, Antonio, who is making rapid progress.
Vicente Ruiz, whom Evans has known f0or more than 20 years, gave the
Manchester man the honour of the alternativa by solemnly handing over his sword
and cape. Mr Evan´s performance, however, was not all to the liking of the crowd,
some of whom whistled and laughed. One spectator shouted “This Englishman is
going to die of old age!” But after making two impressive passes without showing
fear with horns only inches from his body, the Civil Guard captain in charge of
security exclaimed “Qué tío! – What a guy!”

In their day, the automatic washing machine and the vacuum cleaner saved
many hours of hard labour in the average household. Now robot cleaners and other
automated household helpers are about to revolutionise work around the house
once again.
Anyone tired of mowing their lawn will be delighted to hear of the arrival of
lawnmower robots, “the modern replacement for sheep”. Only 3,000 are in use at
the moment, but that figure is expected to grow to over 30,000 in three years.
These robots stay in the garden over the summer and ensure a neatly cut lawn.
They are slow but quiet, working all day, guiding themselves around the lawn, using
sensors to avoid collisions and find uncut grass.
By the end of this year, home robot vacuum cleaners will also go on the
market. They will function in the same way as the lawnmowers, guiding themselves
slowly and quietly around the house. These automatic cleaners will have optical
sensors to detect the dirt, so that the robots can distinguish previously cleaned
areas and move on to new ones. The roots automatically return to the charging
station when batteries are low. The dust bag is emptied during recharging.
Sales of robots are expected to grow quickly and their future looks bright,
since not many people are interested in heavy or repetitive jobs which a robot can
do with little or no effort. And there is another great advantage for employers:
robots never complain about difficult working conditions or long hours.

How do you think our homes will change in the future?
Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same
comment is made from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never
been truer than it is today. The young are better educated. They have a lot more
money to spend and enjoy more freedom. They grow up more quickly and are not
so dependent on their parents. They think more for themselves and do not blindly
accept the ideals of their elders. Events which the older generation remembers
vividly are nothing more than past history. This is as it should be. Every new
generation is different from the one that preceeded it. Today the difference is very
marked indeed.

The old always assume that they know best for the simple reason that they have
been around a bit longer. They don’t like to feel that their values are being
questioned or threatened. And this is precisely what the young are doing. They are
questioning the assumptions of their elders and disturbing their complacency. They
take leave to doubt that the older generation has created the office hours, for
instance, are nothing more than enforced slavery. Wouldn’t people work best if they
were given complete freedom and responsibility? And what about clothing?

The British Council, the British Government’s principal agency for cultural
relations overseas, recently conducted a 31-nation survey (including Spain) of
attitudes towards Britain and the British among young professionals, the world’s up-
and-coming decision makers. Entitled “Through other Eyes”, the survey is part of
the British Government’s efforts to improve the United Kingdom’s image overseas.
Although, according to British Council representatives, quite a lot of respondents in
a number of countries tended to think immediately of the Britain of fifty or a
hundred years ago, and seemed to have little knowledge of the UK as it is today,
the results of the survey showed generally positive attitudes in Africa, the Middle
East and South Asia, but more critical responses from Western Europe and East
Asia. However, all areas agreed on Britain’s most famous representatives: Tony
Blair, The Spice Girls, Hugh Grant and Mr. Bean.
Generally more critical than other young people around the World, Spain’s
future decision makers seemed to prefer Britain’s institutions to its people. Many of
the people who answered the survey saw the British as self-centred, racist, arrogant
and coldly reserved. British people were also considered in general to be class-
conscious, unwelcoming and anti-foreign in attitude. The country’s main virtues, on
the other hand, were thought to be the English language, the nation’s stable
economy and its legal, government and education systems. Britain’s art world was
described the British people as determined and efficient. Though young Spanish
people seemed to be relatively aware of the different countries which go to make
up the united kingdom, they were not very clear as to the differences between
them: Scotland (whose key images were mountains, kilts and whisky) was the most-
recognised country in the UK, ahead of England (London, the Royal Family and the
Tower of London), Wales (the prince of Wales, castles and rugby) and Northern
Ireland (violence and the IRA).

Four British women celebrated the completion of the first half of their
polar journey with ice-cold champagne yesterday. After a two-month
expedition covering 770 kilometres, they have become the first all female
team to reach the North Pole. Now they have to walk back again.

The expedition spokesman said, “We were absolutely jubilant to reach

the Pole. I think we ran all of the last kilometre”.

The final 100 kilometres of the trek was especially hard because of
strong artic currents shifting the ice backwards. At times, the going was so
difficult that the women feared they would not reach the Pole. “It was like
walking on a treadmill. It really showed us down”, the spokesman said.

The women are all safe and well and have completed the trek to the
North Pole faster than many male teams. Each member of the team pulled a
60-kilogram sledge of equipment and provisions throughout the first half of
the 1500 kilometre-journey.

Three aircraft flew from the expedition base cap in Canada to meet the
women. On board were families of the team members, reporters and several
crates of champagne. As they sipped the champagne, one of the women
said, “I’m longing to sleep in a proper bed and to run myself a nice, hot
bath. I wish we could go back with the planes. If only we didn’t have to
return to Canada on foot!”

Like it or not, teachers are still expected to be suitable role models for their
students. This presents something of a problem, because although some teachers
try hard to disguise the fact, they are obviously no less wicked than the rest of
humanity.
Teachers already do society a great service in stressful jobs that have less
status and pay than many other graduate professions. Asking them to be also more
morally pure than the rest of us would be going too far.
However, there are practical reasons why teachers should not display their
imperfections. Kids have a supernatural ability to spot the weaknesses in their
teachers and exploit them ruthlessly. Rumours spread and mutate in the
playground at great speed. If, during the first lesson, Miss Davis seems to have had
a bit of a heavy night, by the final bell she is a certified alcoholic. Authority is easily
undermined if you are exposed as a wrongdoer.
Also, we want schools to encourage children to aspire to high standards of
conduct. We know that humans constantly fail to be as good as they should. But it is
better to set the bar high and fail from time to time, than it is to set it low and
sanction everyday wrongdoing.
For these reasons, it is important that teachers appear to be upholders of the
values we aspire to, standing for high standards of ethics and not allowing their
message to be undermined by revealing how they themselves fail to meet them.
Toleration of hypocrisy? Pure and simple, the old “Do as I say, not as I do”.
People who don’t want to be hypocrites should try to live by the standards they
teach. But the concern of employers, students and parents should be only with how
teachers behave in public.

JUNE 2006 The crowd cheered as the notorious highwayman, Jack Cade,
climbed onto the waiting farm cart in 1779. after two weeks alone in a cold, damp
prison cell, living on bread and water, he was going to pay for all the coaches he
had robbed. With a smile, he slowly peeled off his silk jacket and threw it to them.
He placed the rope carefully round his own neck.
“It’s not the kind of necktie I really like,” he said, “but still, my friends, I’ve no
real regrets, for I’ve always enjoyed living life sweetly to the full. I do not have
anything to fear, because although my business was robbing coaches, I have never
hurt anyone. I have enjoyed more than my share of wine, women and song, so let’s
part smiling.”
A man fired a shot and the horse ran away with the cart, watched by a tearful
girl who was 3 months pregnant by him. After struggling for twenty minutes, Jack
Cade died, hanged from the Hanging Tree, which grows next to the smallest prison
in the world. It was built in 1521 by Henry VIII and is only 2 metres wide. The
villagers named it “The Cage”.
The story of Cade did not end there. Villagers reported sightings of his ghost,
and the Archbishop sent a priest to exorcise it, but in November 1912 over a dozen
people reported seeing the ghost. A well-known medium, Mrs Ada Garvey, held a
séance inside The Cage the following year to make contact with his spirit. The ghost
made contact and said he was waiting for his lady love to return to him. He’s still
waiting.

McDonalds, the world’s biggest fast food company, known for its Big Mac
hamburgers and French fried potatoes, has recently unveiled plans to diversify its
product and move into the hotel business in Switzerland.
Amenities at the two four-star hotels, which are aimed at business travellers during
the week and families at the weekends, include adjustable beds, high-speed
internet access, a child-care centre and soundproof walls. The prices are reasonable
and naturally both the hotels have McDonald’s restaurants.
In the past McDonalds restaurants were famous for serving exactly the same food in
every restaurant and even having similar décor, but times have changed. European
branches, like the company’s restaurant operators in the United States, can make
menu additions or try novel ways to increase their business and draw customers. In
Switzerland, for example, McDonald’s food is served on local trains and aeroplanes.
In the United States, some McDonalds serve freshly baked biscuits or have in-store
ice cream parlours. Some have oak panelled walls and crystal chandeliers whilst
others offer free internet access.
Another example of McDonald’s efforts to develop non-hamburger sales in Europe is
the operation of Aroma Cafes, based in the United Kingdom, which sell cold
sandwiches and coffee.
The recent outbreak of mad-cow disease in Europe has been very bad news for the
company, and sales of hamburgers have fallen sharply. Who knows, but it is just
possible than in 10 years’ time McDonalds may be selling more veggie burgers than
hamburgers.

Most people think that buried treasure is a very romantic notion, but is something
that only occurs in novels rather than in real life. Sometimes, however, truth can be
stranger than fiction…
One hundred and seventy-eight years ago, the Tek Sing set sail from China for Java
with more than 200 crew members, 1.600 passengers and a very special cargo
The ship never arrived at its destination. Several weeks into the journey, it struck
rocks and sank throwing most of the passengers overboard. The exact location of
the wreck was never established
Then, in 1999 as Australian Mike Hatcher, discovered a large mound of mud about
30 metres below the surface of sea near where the ship was supposed to have gone
down. Mike and his team soon realised that this mound was in fact a grave- the final
resting place of the Tek Sing and her contents.
Inside the mound investigators found a wealth of cargo, including watches,
cannons, coins, candlesticks and 350,000 pieces of Chinese porcelain, much of it in
pristine condition.
After being shown in exhibitions in five different countries, the porcelain treasures
are being sold in a German auction that will be held simultaneously over the
internet.
Many of the porcelain pieces, including cups, plates, bowls, pots and vases are blue
and white and have identical decorations, which make them especially valuable to
collectors. They are expected to fetch anywhere from $50 to $5.000 or $6.000
apiece.

Forrest Gump is the story of an incredibly kind and gentle person who is also
what some people might call “mildly retarded”. Forrest is born and raised in
rural Alabama, in the Southern United States. He grows up with his mother, who
rents out rooms in the family house to people travelling through the area.
Despite his lack of sophistication, Forrest manages to become personally
involved in most of the critical events that take place in American history form
the late 1950s until the early 1980s. this includes the Vietnam War, the
Watergate Scandal, the Civil Rights and Anti-Vietnam War protest movements,
and the Computer Revolution. Forrest even meets three American presidents as
well as Elvis Presley and John Lennon. In a way, this movie is a look at the period
of American history through the eyes of a gentle soul who lacks cynicism, but
simply accepts things for what they are
