ELIZABETH I: “A QUEEN WITH “THE HEART AND
STOMACH OF A KING”
Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn
and she reigned from 1558 until her death in 1603.
Elizabeth was loved by her people and her 45 year reign
was in many ways “a golden age” for England. It was also
the age of Shakespeare and the discovery of the New
World.
When the Spanish Armada, the fleet sent by the Catholic
king of Spain, King Philip II to invade England in 1588, was approaching the English coast, Elizabeth
made a passionate speech to encourage her soldiers. She said: “I know I have the body of a feeble
woman, but I have the heart and the stomach of a king, and a king of England too.”

But Elizabeth was not a feeble queen. In fact, writers of the time recorded many incidents of her being

Alternatives to prison
In the UK, 85000 people live in 1………………………….. prisons with not enough staff. In these difficult
conditions, first-time young offenders come into contact with experienced criminals and they can learn
bad habits and behaviours. Nearly three quarters

what are the alternatives?

Restorative justice involves the victim meeting the offender. Mrs Perry said that meeting the burglar of

Critics say that alternative punishments are a soft option. But for many minor offences they seem to be
