Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is not only a Parisian landmark but also an architectural
masterpiece. It is located on the Champs de Mars in Paris's 7th arrondissement,
at 5 Avenue Anatole France, on the "Left Bank ''—that is, to the south of the
Seine river. The historic 7th arrondissement of Paris is also home to many other
famous tourist attractions, including the Musée d’Orsay and the Rodin Museum.
Originally designed to welcome visitors to the International Exposition of 1889,
the Eiffel Tower has been an iconic representation of France and a tribute to the
country's technological strength. Through the years, it has also come to
symbolize the unique identity of Paris as a whole.

In preparation for the 1889 International Exposition, commemorating the 100th

anniversary of the French Revolution, the French government organized a
competition seeking ideas for a fitting monument. The Centennial Committee
considered more than a hundred proposals but ultimately settled on one by the
renowned bridge engineer - Gustave Eiffel. Before accepting the responsibility
for building the tower, Eiffel was known for several notable constructions,
including the Garabit viaduct, which is 160 meters in size over the Truyère River
in southern France, for which he made use of steel as the primary material. The
idea of constructing a 300-meter tower almost entirely out of open-lattice
wrought iron, as proposed by Eiffel, was met with astonishment, skepticism,
and strong opposition due to aesthetic concerns. Upon its completion, the Eiffel
Tower served as the entrance gateway to the exposition.

The Eiffel Tower was unlike anything that had been constructed before; it
surpassed both the dome of St. Peter's in Rome and the Great Pyramid of Giza in
terms of height. The tower was built in only approximately two years, from 1887

to 1889, using a small labor force and at a low cost in comparison to much older
monuments. Eiffel used his advanced knowledge of the way metal arches and
trusses behave when put under pressure to create a construction that was light,
airy, and sturdy; this building was seen as a forerunner to the modern era of civil
engineering and architectural design. Ultimately, its beauty was proven after its
public debut on May 15, 1889.

The Eiffel Tower rests on a 5-meter-high foundation, and a television antenna

atop the tower gives it a total height of 324 meters. It is supported by four
lattice-girder piers that narrow toward the center and combine to form a single
massive vertical tower. The piers curve inward and are connected by girders at
two levels so visitors can walk on them and enjoy the view. On the other hand,
the four semicircular arches at the tower's base are simply decorative and serve
no function for the tower's structural integrity. The unusual shape of the piers,
influenced by both engineering and Eiffel's sense of art, made it necessary to use
elevators to climb on a curve. Glass-cage elevators, made by the American firm
Otis Elevator Company, became one of the tower's most recognizable features
and helped it become a popular tourist destination. The tower held the record
for the tallest structure in the world until the Chrysler Building in New York City
was completed in 1929.

Every night, at the very top of the hour, visitors may view the Eiffel Tower
illuminated for five minutes, marking the beginning of each hour. The tower was
first lit up in 1889 for its premiere at the International Exposition when gaslights
were utilized. The current lighting system has been in place since 1985; however,
the tower has been lit up in a variety of ways since then. The timing of when its
lights go on and off serves to mark significant global events.
