Dance Form
Classical Dance- dance with standardized rules and restrictions. It
can be religious or court and royal entertainment form.
Classical Ballet-a dance of supreme standard
learned from the academe. This originated from the word
BAL-LO-meaning to dance flourished in the royal court
of human body and soul.
Folk Dance- form of dance develop by a group of people that reflects the
traditional life of the people of certain country or region. Implies the
traditional flavors and characteristics , feelings and sentiments. It is also
sometimes called as Traditional dance.
Ethnic /Tribal Dance-a dance particularly found in the group of people of
living together in locality with a common belief and customs.
ballroom areas or for purposes of recreation and
entertainment .
Ex. Latin American Dance( Cha ChaCha,Mambo, Jive, Paso
Doble and Rumba)
Standard Waltz-( Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot and Quick step
➢ Contemporary Dance -this is a combination of Ballet and Modern
dance whereby it uses the varied medium of dance form like
folks ethnics, jazz or other tribal dance.
Popular Dance- the highly recognized as a dance form in
television and other dance centers like discotheque and social
gatherings.
CLASSIFICATIONS of PHILIPPINE FOLK
DANCE
Most provinces in the Philippines have their own
identifying folk dances wherein they showcase the
elegance and beauty of the way they do things, the
way they dress, the way they see things as shown in
different paintings, as they have been influenced by
various events as that happened in the history.
Classifications of Philippine Folk Dance
Most provinces in the Philippines have their own identifying folk dances
wherein they showcase the elegance and beauty of the way they do things,

paintings, as they have been influenced by various events as that happened in
the history. There are five types of folk Dances in the Philippines namely:
1. 1. Ma. Clara-----La Jota, Paseo De Iloilo
2. 2. Rural Luzon-----Binasuan , Tinikling
3. 3.Tribal-------Mindanao-Lumad
4. 4.Muslim Dance—Singkil, Vinta
5. 5. Rural ---Northern Luzon
Types of folk dances in the Philippines
Ma. Clara- 1521 start of Spanish colonial under the leadership of Ferdinand
Magellan.
-Was named after the tragic character in Jose Rizal’s novel “Noli Me
Tangere” Spanish origin-
Ex. Jota Moncadena-Moncada ,Tarlac- with the combination of Spanish and
Ilocano Movement, accented by the rhythm of elongated bamboo castanets.
Carinosa-Panay flirtatious dance known throughout the Philippines
-means affectionate, lovable or amiable., the dancers go hide and seek
movements and other acts to express their feelings.
Cordillera –name given by Spanish conquistadores-meaning “knotted rope
"meaning jumps , rolls and dip.
Ex. Igorot Dance-to heal, worship and ancestors and gods, and insure positive
outcomes during war, harvest and weather.
➢ Muslim Dance –accompanied by the gong, kulintang.
Marked by intricate by hand and arm movement along
with shimmering costumes’.
ex. Singkil –dance takes its name from the bells worn on
the ankles of the Muslim princess.
Rural –closest the Filipino hearts, from rural lowland.
These dances illustrate the fiesta spirit and demonstrate
a love of life.
Ex. Pandanggo sa Ilaw, Sayaw sa Bangko, Maglalatik.etc.
