Blood plays a vital role in nourishing the dhatus (the seven tissues of
the body), ensuring that they are well-supplied with nutrients and
remain healthy.

The blood is connected with sensory perception
(particularly touch) because it supports the nervous system and the
organs involved in sensory function. Healthy blood is essential for
maintaining proper sensory abilities.

FUNCTION OF BLOOD
• Transport of oxygen from the lung to the tissues and transport of
carbon dioxide from lungs to tissue.
• Transport of nutrients like glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins,
electrolytes to various tissues and organs.
• Transport of hormones.
F U N C T I O N O F R A K TA D H AT U
FUNCTION OF BLOOD
• Transport of various excretory products like urea, uric acid to
excretory organs.
• Regulation of body water, electrolytes, acid-base balance etc.
• Immunity by means of first line of natural defense by means of
white blood cells and antibodies etc.
F U N C T I O N O F R A K TA D H AT U
FUNCTION OF BLOOD
• Regulation of heat by means of two ways one is that its
specific heat is high. Its volume is large. Hence it can absorb
or loose heat to reasonable amount without much change in
body temperature. Secondly any extra production of heat is
distributed by it through out the body.

• Mala of Raktadhātu is Pitta.
F O M AT I O N O F R A K TA D H AT U
• Steps Involved in the Formation of Rakta Dhatu:
1. Ingestion and Digestion of Food (Ahara):
• The process of forming Rakta Dhatu begins with the digestion of
food (ahara rasa), which is the first fluid derived from food after
digestion.
• The Agni (digestive fire) in the body digests food, breaking it down
into its basic components—rasa (plasma), which is the first product
of digestion.
F O M AT I O N O F R A K TA D H AT U
• Steps Involved in the Formation of Rakta Dhatu:
2. Formation of Rasa (Plasma):
• The first product formed from digestion is Rasa (the plasma-like
fluid). It contains water, nutrients, and energy required for building
tissues.
• Rasa is considered the subtle form of food after it has been
processed by digestive fire (Jatharagni), and it nourishes the other
dhatus as it is further transformed into the next stages.
F O M AT I O N O F R A K TA D H AT U
3. Transformation of Rasa into Rakta (Blood):
• When Rasa is exposed to Pitta, it is transformed into Rakta
Dhatu (blood). This transformation occurs primarily in the liver
(where bile, which is Pitta, is produced) and spleen, where it is
refined and enriched with hemoglobin, a crucial component
for oxygen transport.
• Pitta brings about the reddening (or color) of the Rasa, and
the blood begins to acquire its vital characteristics, such as its
red color and its ability to nourish the body.

• Ranjana (रं जन) means "to color" or "to impart color."

interacts with Rasa Dhatu (the plasma) to give it its red color,
essentially creating Rakta Dhatu (blood).

• Rasa Dhatu is watery and lacks color. The Ranjaka Pitta in
the liver then acts on the Rasa Dhatu, coloring it red and
turning it into Rakta Dhatu. This is the transformation process
that gives blood its distinctive red color, and it also enriches
the plasma with nutrients and oxygen.
RANJANA OF RASA DHATU BY RANJAK PITTA
Clinical Relevance:
• disturbance in Ranjaka Pitta, can lead to problems with
blood formation and the health of the liver. This could
manifest as paleness, anemia, or weakness, indicating
that the Rasa Dhatu has not been properly transformed
into Rakta Dhatu.
RANJANA OF RASA DHATU BY RANJAK PITTA
Clinical Relevance:
• an imbalance in Ranjaka Pitta can also lead to
excessive heat in the body, causing pitta disorders
like jaundice, yellowishness, or hemolysis
(destruction of blood cells).
