The 3 Ps of
Earthquake
Safety
Predict 01 GPS and Seismograph Observations
Although it is almost impossible to accurately pinpoint where and when an
earthquake will happen with our current technology, there are still many
ways scientists can use to attempt to do so. By looking at historical records
of past earthquakes using GPS and seismographs, scientists can use this
existing pattern of earthquakes to predict future ones.
02 Monitoring Tectonic Movement
In active earthquake zones, tectonic movement is closely monitored by
scientists using equipment such as tiltmeters and laser equipment to
accurately measure tectonic movement, which can indicate the location
and timing of earthquakes.
03 Earthquake-Proof Buildings
Large amounts of money are invested in building buildings that can
withstand the shaking during an earthquake, which helps with minimizing the
Planning
damage done. Some features in these buildings include cross-bracing and
counterweights on roofs that counters the earthquakes’ waves.
04
Land Use Planning
Areas that have the highest risk in terms of earthquakes are mapped out,
and important services like fire stations or hospitals tend to avoid those
areas as they are important in earthquakes. Densely populated housing is
also avoided to minimize social impacts.
05 Training and Drills for Earthquakes
Paramedics, firemen, and police receive training programs for earthquakes,
so they know what to do in case of an emergency. Drills for normal citizens
also happen annually so people are aware of the evacuation plans and
where to go in case of an earthquake.
Prepare 06 Secure Hazards and Safety at Home
To prepare for an earthquake, make sure the potential hazards in your house
are minimized. For example, large and heavy items should not be placed high
up, and shelves should be fastened to walls. Make sure that you also identify
beforehand where you can stay safe in case of an earthquake, e.g. under a
sturdy bed and away from fragile items.
07 Educate the People Around You
Start by educating your family members/the people that you live with. Make
sure everyone knows where to stay safe, and how to turn off gas and
electricity.
