Philippine politics has devolved into a source of turmoil and anarchy, undermining the state's mission to ensure safety and welfare. The election of Bongbong Marcos Jr., the son of a former dictator, raises concerns about the nation's historical amnesia regarding human rights abuses during Martial Law. Natural law is important because it is applied to moral, political, and ethical systems today.

What is your reflection on Philippine Politics?

Politics' mission is to allow individuals of society to work together to achieve major

human goals that they could not achieve separately. Politics ensures the state's safety, order, and
general welfare through negotiation, discussion, legislation, and other political processes. Laws
and rules are put in place to keep things in order and prevent conflict amongst people in different
areas. However, in the case of Philippine politics, rather than being a solution to these issues, it
has turned into a problem, causing turmoil among our government officials and anarchy in our
country. Philippine politics has become one of the primary contributors to our country's collapse.
It is important to know our roots. Studying Philippine history is crucial since it is
necessary to look back in order to acquire insight into how to deal with the present. We must
understand our origins in order for our identity as a community and a nation to be based on facts
and solid historical heritage. By understanding this, we may engage the present and the future
with the assurance that whatever mistakes our forefathers made in the past will not be repeated in
the future, and we can develop our own approach to challenges based on historical wisdom.
However, due to the low quality of education in our country, our people are always prone to
misinformation and remain ignorant of the topics that are crucial especially in choosing the
leaders in governing this nation.
On the 25th of May 2022, the son of the former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.,
Bongbong Marcos Jr. received 31,629,783 votes and has been declared the 17 th president of the
Philippines. This is a major concern, especially for those who were the families of the victims
during the declaration of Martial Law back in 1972 where 3,257 known extrajudicial killings,
35,000 documented tortures, 77 'disappeared', and 70,000 incarcerations have been estimated.
This was the dark period of Philippine history, however, there are arguments that the country
should go on and forget what happened during Martial Law are used to minimize what
transpired. Indeed, the government must adopt a fundamentally new attitude to human rights.
However, disregarding a history of major human rights atrocities without ensuring the rights to
truth, justice, and restitution is hazardous and will lead to additional violations of human rights.
As we've seen throughout the years, sweeping previous human rights atrocities under the rug is
never a viable solution.
Unfortunately, Filipinos still choose to remain blind despite being educated regarding our
history. Shreds of evidence are being laid out in front of them yet they still chose to support the
son of a dictator who faked his degree in college and has a record of tax evasion. Those qualities
are so unfit to become a president, don’t you think? There are lots of politicians who have great
potential and have remarkable educational backgrounds, however, our people don’t see this as a
standard in politics. They would rather choose an actor or a thief over a licensed lawyer who has
earned a lot of merits. Maybe this is the reason why our country remains at the bottom. We keep
electing officials that have no intentions of helping our country but to satisfy their own agendas.
This will keep happening unless we learn our lesson. A country that doesn’t look back on its own
history is as good as dead.
