The facial muscles or muscles of facial
expression are subcutaneous muscles. They
are small and thin. Embryologically they
develop from mesoderm of the second
bramchial arch. All of them are inserted into
the skin and have no fascia. These muscles
work in coordinated manner to produce a
wide range of facial expressions and are
essential for various functions such as
speaking, eating, and expressing emotions.

lip

Function: Raises upper lip and opens

nostrils
Zygomatic minor
Musculus zygomaticus minor

Origin: Anterior part of lateral surface of

zygomatic bone

the mouth

Functions: Draws the upper lip upward

Zygomatic major
Musculus zygomaticus major

Origin: Posterior part of lateral surface of

zygomatic bone

Insertion: Skin at the corner of the mouth

Functions: Draws the corner of the mouth

upward and laterally
Risorius muscle

Origin: Fascia over masseter muscle

Insertion: Skin at the corner of the mouth

Functions: Retracts corner of mouth

muscle
Musculus risorius

Origin: Oblique line of mandible below

canine, premolar, and first molar teeth

Insertion: Skin at the corner of mouth and

blending with orbicularis oris

Functions: Draws corner of mouth

downward and laterally
Levator anguli oris
Musculus levator anguli oris

Origin: Maxilla below infra-orbital foramen

Insertion: Skin at the corner of mouth

Functions: Raises corner of mouth; helps

form nasolabial furrow
Depressor labii inferioris
Musculus depressor labii inferioris

Origin: Anterior part of oblique line of

Insertion: Lower lip at midline; blends with

muscle from opposite side

Functions: Draws lower lip downward and

laterally
