  • Why do nations choose to trade with other
    nations?
  • How do they decide which goods to export, which
    to import—and with whom?
  • What impact does trade have on the economies of
    other nations?
  • How has trade changed over the past few decades
    in UAE?
                                                                                                         4

• Identifies possible reasons for the specialisation.
• Explore why UAE specialises in these products.

  • You will probably find that a great many different
foods and electronic goods in your home were
    produced overseas.
  • Products will vary by country but many countries
produce many types of food as well as importing
the same. Similarly, many countries both
    manufacture and import cars.
  • Investigate using your own knowledge and
research, for example, online or via business
    newspapers.

specific products (e.g. Saudi Arabia in oil, Kenya in horticultural
products and tea and Bangladesh in clothing). 8

  • ‘superior resource allocation’
  • ‘cheaper production methods’
  • Define these terms and use them to classify
and explain the reasons for specialisation
    identified earlier.

  • In groups, discuss the possible benefits and drawbacks of
    specialisation by countries.
  • The benefits and drawbacks should relate to:
  1. consumers of the products,
  2. producers of the products,
  3. the economies in which the consumers and producers are
     based.
  • Explore the benefits and drawbacks of Ghana’s
specialisation in cocoa production for: cocoa producers in
Ghana, consumers of chocolate in the UK, the economies
of Ghana and the UK (Assess Ghana’s Position in Achieving the SDGs). 15

                                            What have you learnt?
  Benefits from international trade and
  specialization include
  • economic growth and higher standards of
    living;
  • a wider variety of goods and services to
    choose from;
  • lower prices and better quality due to
    increased competition.
                                                                                                 19
