1 Scope

This standard specifies the requirements of automotive pedal device performance and the bench test
methods
This standard is applicable to the mechanical articulated metal brake pedal, clutch pedal and accelerator
pedal device of vehicle, and other types of pedal devices can also refer to this standard.

2 Normative references

The clauses in the following documents are referenced in this standard and become the clauses of this
standard. Any modification lists (except text corrections) or revisions of the reference documents with
specific date shall not apply to this standard. But, all parties of agreement based on this standard are
encouraged to discuss if the newer versions of those documents are applicable. All reference documents
without date that are the latest editions are applicable to this standard.

3 Terms and definitions

Established in GB/T 5620 and the GB/T 5728, and the following terms and definitions is also applicable
for standard.
3.1 pedal device

Mechanism operated by driver foot.

3.2 Longitudinal displacement


The Longitudinal displacement of the pedal (distortion) △Lp, (see Figure 1) the action of longitudinal
force P which is perpendicular to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal.

3. 3 Lateral displacement
The Lateral displacement of the pedal (distortion) △Lr (see Figure 12) under the action of Lateral force
which is Parallel to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal.

4 Performance requirements

4.1 General requirements

4.1.1 Work flexibility: the pedal device should be flexible in action throughout the work schedule, no abnormal
noise。
4.1.2 Appearance: smooth surface parts, no cracks, burrs, scratches and other defects

4.2 Basic requirements

4.2.1 Longitudinal displacement: The Longitudinal displacement of the pedal should be less than or equal to 2.
0mm under 50N ± 2N in both positive and negative direction of the longitudinal force,
4.2.2 Lateral displacement: The lateral displacement of the pedal should be less than or equal to 4. 0mm under
50N ± 2N in both positive and negative direction of lateral force,

4.2.3 Stiffness; The Longitudinal displacement of the pedal should be less than or equal to 2. 0mm under the
force provided in Table 1.

4.3 Temperature Adaptability

4.3.1 Work of high-temperature: The pedal device shall not show any interference, jamming phenomenon and
abnormal noise in the test at the ambient temperature of 70 ℃ ± 2 ℃.

4.3.2 Work of low-temperature: The pedal device shall not show any interference, jamming phenomenon and
abnormal noise in the test at the ambient temperature of -40℃±2℃.

4.4 Torsional performance

The pedal and weld shall not show any defects such as cracks or damage after applying 15N • m ± 1N • m
positive and negative direction of rotation torque on the pedal.

4.5 Strength

The permanent deformation is less than or equal to 5.0mm and shall show any defects such as cracks or
damage under the longitudinal force P provided in Table 2.

4.6 Durability Test

4.6.1 The pedal device shall not show the deformation which affect the function of pedal, and any cracks or
other abnormalities.

4.6.2 After the durability test, the longitudinal displacement of the pedal should be less than 4. 0mm under
50N ± 1N in both positive and negative direction of the longitudinal force, and the lateral displacement of the
pedal should be less than 6. 0mm under 50N ± 1N in both positive and negative direction of lateral force,

4.7 Corrosion resistance

After 48h salt spray test, there should not have corrosion points whose diameter greater than 2. 0mm, and
shall show any swelling, peeling and coating softening, but allow a small and scattered corrosion spots. The
corrosion at the welding and screw are not in the scope.

5 Test Method

5.1 Test equipment requirements

5.1.1 Loading direction during the test should be consistent with the requirements.

5.1.2 Loading in the durability test should be a continuous load, the maximum load error range should be
within ± 3%.

5.1.3 The deformation of test fixture must be less 0.5 mm when a force of 500N applied the actual point where
making the test fixture easily deformed.

5.2 Test Method

5.2.1 Basic requirements

5.2.1.1 Longitudinal displacement: Fixed pedal device in the fixture according the real vehicle status, and fixed
the pedal output (with the vacuum booster, brake master cylinders, valves, speed cable, clutch cable or the
junction of clutch master cylinder) in middle of pedal stroke. Apply the Longitudinal force P which is
perpendicular to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal for 1 min, and determine measuring
point of the longitudinal displacement of the pedal, then remove the longitudinal force. After that, apply the
opposite direction of the force P for 1 min. Measure the longitudinal displacement of pedal (distortion) △Lp at
the pre-defined measurement points (see Figure 1).

5.2.1.2 Lateral displacement: fixed pedal unit by the provisions of 5:2.1.1. Apply the lateral force T which is
parallel to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal for 1 min, and then determine measuring point
of the lateral displacement of the pedal, then remove the lateral force. After that, apply the opposite direction
of the force P for 1 min. Measure the lateral displacement of pedal (distortion) △LT at the pre-defined
measurement points (see Figure 2).

5.2.1.3 Stiffness: fixed pedal unit by the provisions of 5:2.1.1. Apply the Longitudinal force P which is
perpendicular to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal for 1 min, and then remove the

longitudinal force. This test shall be repeated 4 times. Determine the measuring point of the longitudinal
displacement of the pedal before the fifth test. Apply the Longitudinal force P at the pedal for 1 min, and
measure the longitudinal displacement of pedal (distortion) △Lp at the pre-defined measurement points (see
Figure 1).

5.2.2 Temperature Adaptability

5.2.2. 1 Work of high-temperature: Stored the test device at the ambient temperature of 70 ℃ ± 2 ℃, action the
pedal 5 times in the working stroke, and observe if any interference resistance phenomenon and the unusual
sound exist for the pedal.

5.2.2.2 Work of low-temperature: Stored the test device at the ambient temperature of-40℃±2℃, and action
the pedal 5 times in the working stroke, and observe if any interference resistance phenomenon and the
unusual sound exist for the pedal .

5.2.3 Torsional performance

Fixed the pedal unit by the provisions of section 5.2.1.1. Applied a positive and negative rotation torque
M of 15N • m ± 1N • m along the weld center line of pedal and pedal leverage, and then check whether exist
any anomalies, such as crack or damage in the weld line and the pedal unit.

5.2.4 Strength: fixed pedal unit by the provisions of 5:2.1.1. Determine the measuring point of the longitudinal
displacement of the pedal, and then apply the Longitudinal force P according to Table 2 which is perpendicular
to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal for 30s, and then remove the longitudinal force. This
test shall be repeated 5 times and measure the permanent deformation of pedal (distortion) △Lp at the
pre-defined measurement points (see Figure 1), and then observe whether exist any defects such as cracks or
damage.

5.2.5 Durability.

5.2.5.1 Durability of brake pedal

a) Brake pedal durability test Step 1: Fix pedal device in the fixture as in real vehicle status, connect the
pedals output to the analog load devices. Apply the Longitudinal force P1(see Figure 4) which is perpendicular
to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal. The value for passenger cars is 0 ~ 500N, other cars is
0 ~ 700N, load times is 5.0 × 105 times, and the load frequency is 0.7Hz ~ 3Hz. Note: the load stroke 85% ±
5% of the whole design pedal stroke.

b) Brake pedal Durability Test Step 2: Fix pedal device according to the provisions of 5.2.5.1.

Apply the thrust force P3 which is parallel with the vertical plane formed by the centerline of around
edges of pedal at 1/4 width of pedal from right pedal edge. The degree between the force direction and the

vertical line of the pedal surface is 20o (see Figure 4). The value for passenger cars is 0 ~ 500N, other cars is 0
~ 700N, load times is 5.0 × 105 times, and the load frequency is 0.7Hz ~ 3Hz. Note: the load stroke 85% ± 5%
of the whole design pedal stroke.

5.2.5.2 Durability of accelerated pedal

a) Accelerated pedal durability test Step 1: Fix pedal device according to the provisions of 5.2.5.1 a).
Apply the Longitudinal force P1 (see Figure 4) which is perpendicular to the pedal surface at the geometric
center of the pedal. The value of force is 0 ~ 100N, the load times is 1.0 × 106 times, and the load frequency is
0.7Hz ~ 3Hz. Note: the load stroke 85% ± 5% of the whole design pedal stroke.

b) Accelerated pedal Durability Test Step 2: Fix pedal device according to the provisions 5.2.5.1 a).
Apply the thrust force P3 which is parallel with the vertical plane formed by the centerline of around edges of
pedal at 1/4 width of pedal from right pedal edge. The degree between the force direction and the vertical line
of the pedal surface is 20o (see Figure 4). The value of force is 0 ~ 100N, the load times is 1.0 × 106 times, and
the load frequency is 0.7Hz ~ 3Hz. Note: the load stroke 85% ± 5% of the whole design pedal stroke.

5.2.5.3 Clutch durability

Fix pedal device according to the provisions of 5.2.5.1 a). Apply the Longitudinal force P1 (see Figure
4) which is perpendicular to the pedal surface at the geometric center of the pedal. The value of force is 0 ~
300N, the load times is 2.0 × 106 times, and the load frequency is 0.7Hz ~ 3Hz. Note: the load stroke 85% ±
5% of the whole design pedal stroke.

5.2.5.4 Durability test inspection.

Test procedure is in accordance with the provisions of 5.2.1.1 and 5.2.12.

5.2.6 Corrosion resistance.

Place test samples into the salt spray chamber after cleaning the external surface,store in the chamber for
48h with continuous neutral salt spray according to GB/T 10125, wash and dry the test sample according to
GB/T 10125, then examine and record the corrosion of sample surface.

5.3 Test items and the number of samples
