Handout:

Dealing with Sin: How Do I Overcome Sin in My Life?

I. We All Are "Sinners"

We all face the challenge of sin for these reasons:

1. Inherited Nature: We inherit a sinful nature from Adam and Eve.

Romans 5:12: "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in
this way death came to all people, because all sinned."

2. Personal Choice: We make individual choices that go against God's will.

Romans 3:23: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

3. Temptation: We are constantly tempted by external and internal forces.

James 1:14-15: "but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and
enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth
to death."

4. Lack of Perfection: We are imperfect beings living in an imperfect world.

1 John 1:8: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us."

* Sin is a transgression against God's law and a rebellion against His will.
* Sin includes actions, thoughts, and intentions.
* Consequences of sin:
 Separation from God
 Guilt and shame
 Negative impact on relationships
 Spiritual death
 Romans 6:23: "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

 Selfishness
 Lust
 Greed
 Fear
 Lack of self-control

External Factors:
 Peer pressure
 Negative influences
 Media
 Temptations from the world
IV. Overcoming Sin

God's View:
 God hates sin but loves the sinner.
 God offers mercy and forgiveness.
1 John 1:9:** "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us
from all unrighteousness."

Romans 8:1: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Steps to Overcome Sin:

1. Confession and Repentance: Acknowledge your sins to God and turn away from them.
2. Prayer: Seek God's help and strength.
3. Study the Bible: Learn God's word and apply it.
4. Fellowship: Surround yourself with supportive Christians.
5. Accountability: Find a trusted mentor or friend.
6. Focus on Christ: Keep your eyes on Jesus.
