Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone - Summary
Introduction to Harry Potter
Harry Potter is an orphan who lives with his cruel relatives, the Dursleys—Uncle Vernon,
Aunt Petunia, and their spoiled son, Dudley. They force Harry to sleep in a cupboard under
the stairs and treat him like an outcast. Strange things often happen around Harry, but he
doesn't understand why. On his 11th birthday, he learns the truth: he is a wizard.
Hagrid, a giant and the Keeper of Keys at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,
delivers the news and takes Harry shopping for school supplies in Diagon Alley. There, Harry
discovers he is famous in the wizarding world for surviving an attack by Lord Voldemort, the
Dark wizard who killed his parents. Voldemort tried to kill baby Harry, but the curse
backfired, leaving Harry with a lightning-shaped scar and causing Voldemort to disappear.
Hogwarts and New Friends
Harry boards the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9¾ and meets Ron Weasley, a friendly and
kind-hearted boy, and Hermione Granger, a highly intelligent and ambitious girl. At
Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat places them in Gryffindor House. They meet Draco Malfoy, an
arrogant Slytherin student, and their strict but fair headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.
Harry quickly makes an enemy of Professor Snape, the Potions Master, who seems to dislike
him from the start. However, he also discovers that he has a natural talent for Quidditch and
is selected as the Seeker for Gryffindor's team.
The Mystery of the Sorcerer’s Stone
Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover that a secret object is being guarded on the third floor of
the castle. After encountering a giant three-headed dog named Fluffy, they realize it is
protecting something valuable. Through Hagrid, they learn about the Sorcerer’s Stone, a
magical object that grants immortality and is currently hidden at Hogwarts.
The Journey to the Sorcerer’s Stone
As the year progresses, the trio realizes that someone is trying to steal the Stone. They decide
to stop the theft themselves and navigate through a series of magical obstacles:
1. Fluffy – They put the three-headed dog to sleep by playing music.
2. Devil’s Snare – A magical plant that entangles them, until Hermione uses light to
escape.
3. Flying Keys – Harry catches the correct key with his Seeker skills.
4. Giant Wizard Chess – Ron bravely sacrifices himself to win the game and allow
Harry to move forward.
5. Potion Riddle – Hermione solves Snape’s logic puzzle to find the correct potion.
Final Confrontation with Voldemort
Harry enters the last chamber alone and finds Professor Quirrell, not Snape, standing before
the Mirror of Erised. Quirrell reveals that he has been working for Voldemort, who is weak
but still alive in a parasitic form attached to Quirrell’s body. The Mirror of Erised, a magical
mirror that shows one’s deepest desire, reveals that Harry already possesses the Sorcerer’s
Stone.
Voldemort tries to convince Harry to hand over the Stone, but Harry refuses. When Quirrell
attacks, he discovers that he cannot touch Harry without being burned. Dumbledore arrives
just in time to save Harry, and Quirrell is ultimately defeated. Voldemort’s spirit flees,
leaving Harry unconscious.
The Aftermath
Harry wakes up in the hospital wing, where Dumbledore explains that his mother’s sacrifice
left him with magical protection, which is why Quirrell couldn’t touch him. The Sorcerer’s
Stone has been destroyed to prevent further misuse.
At the end-of-year feast, Gryffindor wins the House Cup after last-minute points from Harry,
Ron, Hermione, and Neville for their bravery. The school year ends, and Harry returns to the
Dursleys for the summer, knowing he is no longer just an ordinary boy—he is a wizard with a
great destiny ahead.
