Afterward,
answer the following questions below. (3 items × 10 points)
1. Did the actress portray her character well, or should Marvel have stayed
true to the source material? Share your thoughts about it.
• The actress remained calm despite the actor’s frustration and did not let her
composure break. Instead of reacting emotionally, she maintained her poise
and demonstrated her power, proving her superiority through actions rather
than words. This effectively showcased the Ancient One’s wisdom, control,
and mastery, reinforcing her role as a mentor figure in the film. Because of
this, she portrayed her character very well, capturing the essence of a wise
and powerful teacher who remains unshaken even in tense situations.
2. Did the film truly whitewash the character in this film? Explain your
thoughts about it.
• The casting of a white actress as the Ancient One was controversial. Some
fans perceived it as whitewashing, which is a frequent Hollywood practice
where minority characters are replaced or played by white actors, resulting
in a loss of cultural representation. Others justified the casting, saying that
the Ancient One is a mystical creature and should not be bound by race.
Though the alteration was intended to give the character a new spin, it
caused controversy over adhering to the source material and the offering of
chances to underrepresented performers.
3. Without browsing online, why do you think Marvel took this approach?
Explain your thoughts about it.
• Since Marvel was adapted by Hollywood, I don’t think there’s anything wrong
with casting a white actress for the role. They couldn’t just get an Asian
actress from another country when the adaptation was made within
Hollywood. Additionally, the role wouldn’t have been given to the actress if
she wasn’t capable of executing the character well. Every cast member went
through auditions to determine who best fit the role and could do justice to
the character.
