The Knowledge Society
The world is changing at a faster rate than at any time in its history. The global explosion of the Internet,
the rate of technological innovation and the changing structure of society are nothing short of a new
technological revolution. 1 ___ The developed world is already almost fully digital and the rest of the world is
catching up fast. This means that fundamental changes in how society operates in a digital world will rapidly
emerge.
Just as agriculture became less and less a central part of the world economy as manufacturing took over,
so manufacturing will give way to a more knowledge- and service-based economy. 2 ___ Also, the people
with the greatest technical skills will be some of the most in-demand workers.
Traditional work in manufacturing will slowly be taken over by machines that are better at doing mechanical
repetitive work. 3 ___ Artificial intelligence will also have a growing role in society and in the workplace, even
in areas such as predictive policing – just like in the film Minority Report.
Another huge issue for society in the future will be an ageing population. 4 ___ This means that there will be
a smaller proportion of young people. One consequence of this will be that people will have to work longer and
perhaps never fully retire. Many people will probably be working from home, as there will be less of a need
to physically go to a workplace. Undoubtedly, this will suit an older workforce more than the current system.
5 ___ There might be less privacy when the devices we use are tracking our every move, but we will have
access to unprecedented amounts of knowledge and information. Work will be more interesting, as robots
and artificial intelligence take over mundane tasks. It’s one of the most exciting periods of history ever.
A There are both pros and cons related to changes in society in a digital world.
B This will mean that millions of unskilled workers will lose their jobs over the coming decades and will need
to retrain.
C Health and education will be two of the world’s biggest industries in the coming years.
D Over half the world is already connected to the Internet.
E Moreover, the new technology may be seen as harmful to the young mind.
F Not only will people be living longer, but they will also be having fewer children.
