The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Gifts
1. Wisdom
○ This gift of the Holy Spirit helps perfect the virtue of faith that we possess.
○ It helps us give more importance to those things which we believe through faith
than to those things of this world.
○ Through wisdom, we come to realize that love is more important than money,
faith is more important than popularity.
○ It also makes us realize that God should be loved above all and other creatures
because of him.
2. Understanding
○ This gift helps us to grasp the very essence of the truths of the Catholic Faith
even if in a limited way because our human mind is limited.
3. Counsel
○ The gift of counsel perfects the virtue of prudence that we possess.
○ Through this gift, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to determine how to act best
in a given situation.
○ It is counsel that helps us remain firm in our belief even if there are forces that tell
us to abandon our faith.
4. Fortitude
○ When the Holy Spirit, through the gift of counsel, empowers us to know the best
course of action to take in a given situation, the gift of fortitude will empower us to
act on what we know.
○ While fortitude is sometimes called courage, it goes beyond what we normally
think of as courage.
○ Fortitude is the virtue of the martyrs that allows them to suffer death rather than
to renounce the Christian faith.
5. Knowledge
○ This is the gift that allows us to see the circumstances of our life the way that
God sees them.
○ It allows us to look through the eyes of faith, the eyes of God.
○ Through this gift of the Holy Spirit, we can see God’s purpose for us and to
pursue this purpose.
6. Piety
○ This gift of the Holy Spirit helps us to give sincere worship to God.
○ Through this gift, we go beyond prayer and worship of God as mere duties but
consider them as ways of sincerely honoring and giving gratitude to him.
○ Piety turns our worship of God into expressions of love for him.
7. Fear of the Lord
○ This gift of the Holy Spirit perfects the virtue of hope in us.
○ It develops in us a strong desire not to offend God, not so much because we fear
his punishment but because we love him and do not want to hurt him.
○ This gift also allows us to trust that God will give us the grace that we need in
order to keep from offending him.
○ Our desire not to offend God is more than a sense of duty; fear of the Lord arises
out of love.

12.Chastity
➢ Chastity
○ The fruit of the Holy Spirit manifests in a person’s ability to moderate desire for
sexual pleasure, the body’s most domineering passion, according to the
principles of faith and right reason.
○ It is manifested in our power to control our thoughts and discipline our senses,
especially the eyes. It is greatly assisted by modesty and purity.
➢ Gentleness
○ Commonly known as meekness, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit manifested by a
person who puts power and strength under control.
○ The person who possesses this quality pardons injuries, corrects faults, and rules
his own spirit well.
➢ Modesty
○ As an essential component of humility, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit that helps us
achieve a spirit of contentment.
○ We manifest this fruit when we do not harbor any ambitions, nor take pride in any
of our achievements.
The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of
eternal glory.
Confirmation
➢ Christ himself declared that he was marked with his Father’s seal.
➢ Christians are also marked with a seal; “It is God who establishes us with you in Christ
and has commissioned us; he has put his seal on us and has given his Spirit in our
hearts as a guarantee.”
➢ This seal of the Holy Spirit marks our total belonging to Christ, our enrollment in his
service forever, as well as the promise of divine protection in the great eschatological
trial.
